Recovery of muscle strength following arthroscopic meniscectomy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the time course of spontaneous recovery (no supervised training) of muscle torques in the first 3 months postarthroscopic partial meniscectomy. This information will then be used to plan a clinical trial investigating the effects of rehabilitation following arthroscopic meniscectomy. Knee extensor and flexor strength was evaluated at four different velocities (60, 120, 180, and 240 degrees/sec) preoperatively and every 2 weeks from weeks 2-12 postsurgery. Eight subjects were evaluated on a Cybex II+ and 14 subjects were evaluated on a Cybex II isoki

Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy: 5-year follow-up.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of preexisting chondromalacia at time of surgery on the results at a minimum of 5 years follow-up of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. The patients were divided into two groups: group I (87 patients, average age 29.8 years) with no intraoperative findings of chondromalacia at the time of surgery, and group II (234 patients, average age 39.2 years) with chondromalacia at the time of surgery. The follow-up period was 70-86 months, with the criterion of a minimum of 5 years in each patient. Postoperative changes were evaluated according to

[Meniscectomy--total, partial, open or closed operation?].

The importance of the menisci for stability of the knee joint is pointed out. Because of its mechanical importance in the knee a more conservative behaviour for treatment is recommended. Even the degenerated meniscus can play his role sufficiently. For each type of lesion individual surgery is applied, especially if there is locking impingement linked with mechanically induced arthritis. Out of the clinical results follows that arthroscopic partial meniscectomy is superior to conventional open meniscectomy, especially in the early postoperative period.

Long-term results of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy.

Detailed analysis of a series of 99 arthroscopic partial meniscectomies with a minimum follow-up time of 2.1 years (mean, 3 years; maximum, 4.5 years) showed that the spectacularly good early results were maintained in the longer term. Group I knees (67) had no previous surgery or ligamentous insufficiency, but those with chondromalacia were included. The remaining knees were designated Group II and analyzed separately. Group I showed 51.5% excellent and 39% good results, using criteria based on those of Tapper and Hoover. When only results in bucket handle tears were considered, 73% were exce

[Arthroscopic meniscectomy. Comparison of the functional results of meniscectomy in patients above and under 45 years of age. Apropos of 107 cases].

A comparative retrospective study of 107 cases of arthroscopic meniscectomies performed between December 1985 and December 1988 on 52 operated patients under 45 (P1 = 54 knees) and 52 operated patients over 45 (P2 = 53 knees). Those two populations have been selected among 292 isolated meniscal lesions files (without anterior cruciate ligament tear) operated for arthroscopic meniscectomy between 1985 and 1988. There were 81 medial meniscus lesions, 16 lateral meniscus lesions and 10 bi-meniscal lesions. The follow-up was for 1 to 5 years with a score of 70.3 per cent functional satisfactory re

Recurrent synovial chondromatosis treated with meniscectomy and synovectomy.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare benign intraarticular metaplasia of synovium. This process may result in the production of detached particles of highly cellular cartilage in the involved joint spaces. It is most often reported in the larger joints of the body including the knee, hip, elbow, and ankle. Since Axhausen in 1993 reported the first case affecting the temporomandibular joint, several articles have been listed in the literature regarding the presentation, diagnosis, and management of this form of an arthropathy. This is a case of a recurrent synovial chondromatosis that was approach

Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. Technique and long-term results.

The functional results in 125 patients treated by arthroscopic meniscectomy were reviewed two to four years after operation. Arthrotomy was necessary to complete the procedure in 15 cases and done at the same session. The other 110 cases were evaluated in a follow-up questionnaire study, which included a knee function rating system. The postoperative rehabilitation period was very short, with the majority of patients returning to work within two weeks. Most athletic patients returned to their preinjury level within four weeks. The best functional results were obtained in cases with an isolated

Partial meniscectomy and osteoarthritis. Implications for treatment of athletes.

The biphasic ultrastructure of the meniscus and of articular cartilage provides their function in the complex biomechanics of the knee joint including load distribution, shock absorption, viscoelasticity, a smooth low friction gliding surface and resilience to compression. Meniscectomy may lead to destruction of cartilage and to osteoarthritis of the knee joint. Osteoarthritic changes after meniscectomy have been reported in up to 89% of patients. Retrospective analysis after open or arthroscopically assisted meniscectomy revealed restriction in sports to be between 2 and 50% and cessation of

[Arthroscopic meniscectomies. Short- and median-term results].

Two hundred and forty arthroscopic meniscectomies have been performed between 1980 and 1982. One hundred and ninety-eight cases have been reviewed with a follow up of between 3 and 6 months and 101 cases were reviewed with a follow up of between 6 months and 2 years. On eight occasions the arthroscopy had to be completed by an arthrotomy and one of these became septic. No sepsis was observed in the absence of arthrotomy. Three cases of phlebitis and one haemarthrosis were seen. Social and functional rehabilitation was very rapid. The stay in hospital was 2 days and resumption of sport and work

[False aneurysm following arthroscopic meniscectomy of the knee].

INTRODUCTION: Blood vessel injuries during arthroscopic knee surgeries are unusual and rare and comprise less than 1% of all arthroscopic complications. Between 1990 and 2004, at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Institute of Surgery, Novi Sad, 2100 arthroscopic knee surgeries were carried out. Only one case of false aneurysm of the geniculate lateral inferior artery was reported. CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old professional waiter injured his left knee while getting up from a kneeling position. He had a typical clinical rupture with an interior meniscus lesion. Knee arthrosco

Idiopathic osteonecrosis of the femoral condyle after meniscectomy.

Osteonecrosis of the medial femoral condyle rarely appears after an arthroscopic meniscectomy. However, in such cases, MRI is very important for early diagnosis. Here, we report two cases of osteonecrosis, which were not found in a preoperative MRI examination, but were then diagnosed after meniscectomy. Although the etiology of osteonecrosis still remains unclear, microcirculation disorders and microfracture of the femoral condyle are believed by many investigators, and varus deformation of the knee joint caused by meniscectomy are considered to be risk factors causing osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis of the knee following arthroscopic laser meniscectomy.

An unusual case of osteonecrosis of the knee following an arthroscopic laser meniscectomy is presented. The unusual presentation of the osteonecrosis and the chronology suggest that the osteonecrosis of the knee resulted from damage to the articular cartilage and subchondral bone at the time of the arthroscopic laser meniscectomy.

Arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy in the older patient.

We reviewed the cases of sixty-three patients who were more than forty years old when they underwent arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy. Thirty-five patients returned for clinical evaluation and another eight were evaluated by questionnaire and telephone interview. Over the thirty-five-month follow-up period, progressive varus deformity and medial joint-space narrowing were not observed. Of the twenty-seven knees in Group I (non-degenerative tears) that underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy, satisfactory results were found in 96 per cent. Of the seventeen knees in Group II (degener

Arthrography in the investigation of persistent pain after meniscectomy.

The authors report 62 patients in whom arthrography of the knee had been performed because of persistent pain after menisectomy. In about 60% of the cases the interval between operation and arthrography was less than 18 months. The causes of residual pain identified by arthrography were divided into meniscal and extra meniscal. The most frequent findings were remnants of pathological meniscal tissue; lesions of the anterior cruciate ligament; synovial and chondral pathology. Thirty patients were checked by arthroscopy and were subjected to further operation. In 80% of these cases the arthrogra

Patellar tendinopathy after arthroscopic meniscectomy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic meniscal surgical procedures as a whole have a low complication rate. The objective of this article is to report on a rare acute patellar tendinopathy after a knee arthroscopic procedure and to provide a brief discussion of its potential pathogenesis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old man reported acute anterior knee pain 2 weeks after a knee arthroscopical meniscectomy. The MRI showed full-thickness signal alteration of the patellar tendon including proximal and distal insertions. Histological examination of an open excisional biopsy revealed myxoid degeneration. Landing adaptations following isolated lateral meniscectomy in athletes.

PURPOSE: Objective functional outcomes following isolated radial lateral meniscus tears in the athlete between the ages of 14-25 are not clearly defined. The objective of this study was to determine whether patients following lateral meniscectomy demonstrate lower extremity asymmetries relative to control athletes 3 months after surgery. We hypothesized that following lateral meniscectomy, athletes aged 14-25 years old would demonstrate altered landing biomechanics compared to sex, age, height, weight, and sport-matched controls. METHODS: A total of 18 subjects were included in this study. Ni

Radial displacement of lateral meniscus after partial meniscectomy.

Radial displacement or extrusion of the meniscus has been reported as a complication after meniscal transplantation and is sometimes observed in knees with advanced osteoarthritis. In this report, the case of a patient with radial displacement of the lateral meniscus after partial meniscectomy is presented. He had an incomplete discoid lateral meniscus with an anterior horn tear. The inner portion of the lateral meniscus was excised to leave a width of 8 to 10 mm. However, follow-up magnetic resonance imaging showed radial displacement of the mid-body of the lateral meniscus and a compatible f

[Arthroscopic meniscectomy in anterior cruciate ligament deficient knees].

Results of 107 meniscectomies in 100 patients with long-lasting ACL deficiency are presented. Meniscectomy aggravates symptoms of ACL deficiency, worsening function of the knee. Bucket handle tear was observed most often--45 cases (36 displaced ones). The patients were reevaluated 3 years after surgery on an average using Tegner scale and pivot shift test. Tegner scale assessment rendered 62 per cent of excellent and good results, 32 per cent fair and poor results. Pivot shift was found in 21 patients prior to meniscectomy and in 37 patients at the follow-up examination; 18 patients were direc
