The Influence of Structured Nature Experiences on Youth Mental, Emotional, and Social Health Competencies in Summer Camps: A Systematic Review.

There is a lack of consensus on the role of structured nature experiences (SNEs) in mental, emotional, and social health (MESH) competencies across youth summer camp participants. This systematic review synthesized research on the relationship between SNEs and MESH competencies in camps since the emergence of positive youth development. Following a Google Scholar search, 21 articles were reviewed and synthesized. The findings revealed that SNEs consistently support growth in MESH competencies, particularly through experiential learning and nature immersion. The mental health domain was the mos

Perceived parental competence and mental health in school-aged adolescents in Colombia: evidence from a well-being and risk approach.

BACKGROUND: This study examined adolescent-reported perceived parental competence as a relational indicator associated with mental health and well-being in Colombian adolescents. Perceived parental competence was defined as youths' appraisal of caregivers' support, responsiveness, monitoring, communication, and boundary-setting, and was modeled as the dependent variable rather than as a causal determinant of adolescent outcomes. METHODS: A quantitative, cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted with 1,005 adolescents from three convenience-selected school settings representing urban Man

Associations Between Motor Competence, Health-Related Physical Fitness, and Mental Health Outcomes in Spanish Adolescents: The ENERGYCO Study.

BACKGROUND: Motor competence (MC) has been proposed as an important correlate of physical and mental health during youth. However, evidence examining its associations with both health-related physical fitness and mental health in Spanish adolescents remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between objectively assessed MC and health-related physical fitness and mental health in Spanish adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 273 adolescents (46.9% girls; 12-17 years). MC was assessed using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency Short Form (BOT-2 SF)

Middle childhood profiles of social-emotional competencies and difficulties differentiate risk of health service presentations with adolescent mental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The dual-factor model of mental health postulates a role for positive mental health, alongside mental illness, in determining mental health care needs. Informed by this model, the present study delineated profiles of social-emotional competencies and difficulties during middle childhood in a population-based sample of girls and boys and determined their association with adolescent mental disorder diagnoses. METHOD: Latent profile analyses were conducted across five indices of social-emotional competency and four indices of psychopathology that were measured by questionnaire self-re

Is Mental Health Competence in Childhood Associated With Health Risk Behaviors in Adolescence? Findings From the UK Millennium Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Promoting positive mental health, particularly through enhancing competencies (such as prosocial behaviors and learning skills), may help prevent the development of health risk behaviors in adolescence and thus support future well-being. Few studies have examined how mental health competencies in childhood are associated with adolescent health risk behaviors, which could inform preventative approaches. METHODS: Using UK Millennium Cohort Study data (n = 10,142), we examined how mental health competence (MHC) measured at the end of elementary school (11 years) is associated with self-

"It's Not Only about Clinical Tools but Also Our Role as Agents of Social Change": Implementing a LGBT Competency Training for Future Mental Health Practitioners in Mexico.

Recent studies recommend implementing a curriculum that is inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) identities in health-related higher education programs. Inclusive health services are a means to address stigma-related adverse health outcomes in these populations. In Mexico, research has revealed that sexual and gender minority individuals experience discriminatory conditions that put them at risk for mental health problems. The present study tested the impact of a LGBT training protocol in Mexico; 17 psychology majors living in Mexico City received 12-plus hours of trainin

A person-based approach to emotion socialization in toddlerhood: Individual differences in maternal emotion regulation, mental-health and parental sense of competence.

Mothers adopt various emotion socialization strategies and sometimes exhibit contradictory responses. Thus, it is essential to understand how mothers differentiate in their use of emotion socialization strategies, and whether a set of emotion socialization responses is associated with individual differences in emotion regulation, mental health, and parental sense of competence during toddlerhood. Therefore, we used a person-centred approach to identify mothers' emotion socialization responses and then compared mothers based on the aforementioned characteristics. The mothers (N = 680) with todd

Rates and Correlates of Mental Health Symptoms in Currently Competing Elite Athletes from the Australian National High-Performance Sports System.

AIMS: Elite athletes are at risk of mental ill-health via exposure to sports-related stressors and the overlap in competitive playing years with the peak age of onset of mental ill-health. Despite this risk, there is a paucity of robust empirical data on mental health symptoms in currently competing athletes. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and correlates of mental health symptoms in a representative, national sample of elite athletes and to compare rates against published community norms. METHODS: A cross-sectional, anonymous, online survey was administered to all cate

Mental health and learning disability nursing students' perceptions of the usefulness of the objective structured clinical examination to assess their competence in medicine administration.

The aim of this study was to evaluate mental health and learning disability nursing students' perceptions of the usefulness of the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in assessing their administration of medicine competence. Learning disability (n = 24) and mental health (n = 46) students from a single cohort were invited to evaluate their experience of the OSCE. A 10-item survey questionnaire was used, comprising open- and closed-response questions. Twelve (50%) learning disability and 32 (69.6%) mental health nursing students participated. The OSCE was rated highly compared to o

Mental illness and legal fitness (competence) to stand trial in New York State: expert opinion and criminal defendants' psychiatric symptoms.

Fitness to Stand Trial is a critical concept in the adjudication of justice-involved persons. A retrospective study was conducted to examine criminal defendants' specific psychiatric symptoms and those symptoms' associations with expert opinions on Competence to Stand Trial. One hundred charts were reviewed: 50 Cases (opined as Not Fit) were compared against 50 Controls (opined as Fit) with respect to ratings on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). A significance level of 0.001 was selected a priori. Statistically significant differences were found in seven of the eighteen BPRS symptom c

Effectiveness of the coping and parental competence intervention on mental well-being in parents of preschool children with special educational needs: A randomized controlled trial.

Parenting children with special educational needs presents multiple and unique challenges, often resulting in elevated emotional distress among caregivers. This study examined the efficacy of a Coping and Parenting Competence-Early Intervention to improve mental well-being in parents of preschool children with special educational needs. In this parallel-group randomised controlled trial, 83 eligible parents were randomly allocated to either a 7-week intervention group (n = 44) or a treatment-as-usual control group (n = 39). Results showed significant improvements in the intervention group for

Can learning experience in pharmacy school shape a competent leader? A cross-sectional study on leadership development, mental wellbeing, and Islamic values.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The contemporary healthcare landscape dictates that pharmacists demonstrate comprehensive leadership competencies alongside advanced clinical expertise to navigate complex patient-care environments effectively. While academic curricula and extracurricular engagements are recognized as primary mechanisms for cultivating these professional proficiencies, the psychological impact of assuming such roles-particularly the manifestation of academic burnout and stress-remains critically underexplored within the literature. This study investigates undergraduate pharmacy students

LGBTQ+ cultural-competence training effectiveness: Mental health organization and therapist survey outcome results from a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and other sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQ+) persons frequently lack access to mental health service organizations (MHOs) and therapists who are competent with LGBTQ+ clients. Existing continuing education programmes to better equip therapists to work with LGBTQ+ clients are often not widely accessible or skills focused, evaluated for effectiveness and inclusive of MHO administrators who can address the organizational climate needed for therapist effectiveness. Maternal mental health and caregiver competence of HIV-positive and negative women caring for their singleton newborns in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health during the perinatal period has been of interest to many researchers, with antenatal depression and postnatal depression (PND) being a leading cause of morbidity. The adverse effects of maternal depression on the offspring throughout infancy, childhood and adolescence are well documented. Studies on the mental health of persons living with HIV have also reported a high prevalence of depression. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence of PND in a sample of HIV-positive and HIV-negative mothers delivering healthy singleton infants at one obstetric unit in KwaZu
