The mental foramen (MF) is an important anatomic landmark of the mandible, through which the mental nerve and blood vessels emerge. The importance of MF in dental practice is especially related to dental implants placement and other surgical procedures in the region. It is fundamental to be careful in order to avoid nerve and vessels injury during procedures. Anatomic variations of the MF can be found, such as occurrence of multiple foramina and unusual location. In very rare occasions, the absence of MF can be detected. The observation of this variation is not always possible using only conve

INTRODUCTION: The mandibular nerve and the mental foramen have occasionally shown variations in its anatomy. This report aims to present a case of lingual mental foramen recognised on three-dimensional cone beam computed tomographic imaging (CBCT).
CASE REPORT: Routine Orthopantomogram (OPG) and CBCT images were evaluated to assess the status of impact third molars in a 31-year-old female who had visited the dental clinics in our institution. The OPG image failed to reveal any anatomic variation in the position of the mental foramen. On tracing the course of the mandibular canal in CBCT image

UNLABELLED: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant tumor predisposition disorder and a disease with frequent osseous malformations. In the craniomaxillofacial region, bony malformations of NF1 patients are often associated with plexiform neurofibromas (PNF). PNF can manifest early in life and often have a topographical relationship to the branches of the trigeminal nerve. It is unclear when these nerve sheath tumors interact with the skeleton. Since tooth and bone development can be correlated with stages of prenatal development, a fixed point of mandibular ossification, the t

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Violations of the mandibular canal (MC) and mental foramen (MF) and subsequent injuries to their neurovascular bundle have been reported after surgical and nonsurgical dental procedures. Besides using advanced technologies such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), clinicians should be aware of the anatomy and location of MC and MF in different populations. This study aims to describe the morphologic characteristics of the MF, MC, and its intrabony location in relation to the apices of mandibular posterior teeth in an Emirati subpopulation using CBCT.
METHODS: A tota

Inferior Alveolar Nerve (IAN) transposition is an option for prosthetic rehabilitation in cases of moderate or even severe bone reabsorption for patients that do not tolerate removable dentures. The aim of the present report is to describe an inferior alveolar nerve transposition with involvement of the mental foramen for implant placement. The surgical procedure was performed under local anesthesia, by the inferior alveolar, lingual and buccal nerve blocking technique. Centripetal osteotomy was performed, and bone tissue was removed, leaving the nerve tissue free in the foramen area. After th

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to identify osseous and dental mandibular landmarks that consistently indicate the location of the mental foramen, the primary reference for the mental-incisive trunk block. Materials and Methods: Computed Tomography (CT) scans of the mandibles of 100 patients from a Romanian population (N = 100) were retrospectively analyzed to measure the following: distances from the mental foramen to the basal border of the mandible, alveolar process/crest, and midline, as well as the position of the foramen relative to the lower premolars. These measurements wer

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic tumors are common benign dental lesions in adolescents; however, the mixed type is relatively uncommon. When these lesions occur in the mandibular premolar region near the mental foramen, they may lead to nerve compression and displacement of adjacent teeth. Treatment difficulty arises from balancing the complete removal of the lesion with the protection of the nerve.
CASE BRIEF: A 13-year-old female presented with a painless mass in the left mandible. CBCT revealed a high-density mass measuring ∼2.2 cm in the left mandibular premolar area, compressing the inferior alv

The purpose of the present study was to determine the location of the mental foramen (MF) based on soft- and hard-tissue landmarks, to facilitate prediction of the location of this structure during facial and dental surgery. Forty-two hemispheres of 21 adult cadavers (16 men and 5 women; aged 30-75 years) were dissected to expose the MF. The locations of the MFs were evaluated with direct and photographic measurements. Most of the MFs presented a single foramen (95%), except for only 2 cases with double foramina (5%). The MFs localized 23.38 +/- 2.00 mm inferior and 3.55 +/- 1.70 mm medial to

OBJECTIVES: The mandible has emerged as a pivotal structure for sex estimation in forensic contexts due to its exceptional postmortem preservation and pronounced sex-linked morphological variation. Among the anatomical landmarks on the mandible, the mental foramen has garnered significant attention due to its metric consistency and resistance to age-related resorption, making it an ideal candidate for population-specific morphometric analyses. This study aimed to rigorously evaluate sexual dimorphism in the spatial relationship between the mental foramen and mandibular lower border within the
