There is accumulating evidence from observational and intervention studies in nutritional psychiatry regarding the importance of diet for mental health outcomes across the lifespan. Here, we synthesise this evidence, including findings from large meta-analyses showing cross-sectional and prospective associations between diet quality and mental health, even following adjustment for relevant confounding factors. Potential mechanistic pathways underpinning these associations include those of the gut-brain axis, demonstrated mostly in animal models. Dietary fibre is an important component of healt

Cannabis and marihuana are psychoactive substances. Beside alcohol they belong to the most widely consumed drugs in most western countries. Psychiatric complications are frequent: substance use, dependence, possibly withdrawal, intoxications and cognitive dysfunction. There is substantial evidence for an increased risk for psychosis in chronic cannabis consumers. Recent data also indicate a high comorbidity with affective disorder. Chronic pain is only rarely mentioned as reasons for cannabis use, psychological or social reasons prevail. Psychiatric complications in cannabis consumers and its

Research into user involvement groups in mental health was conducted to make them more effective. Responses revealed frustration about a lack of real input, use of volunteers, lack of payment and burn-out of activists. The responses also revealed a widespread feeling of 'influence without power'.

Athletes suffer from most mental health symptoms and disorders at prevalences that equal or exceed those of the general population. They may be at disproportionate risk for sleep problems, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, disordered eating and eating disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and some addictive disorders. Clinicians should be aware of nuanced presentations of mental health disorders in athletes, routinely ask their patients about mental health, and readily refer or treat. Psychotherapy is first-line treatment for most mental health sympt

The life expectancy of the world population has increased considerably and the absolute number of 65-year olds will approximately triple in the next 40 years. Since the prevalence of chronic illness and disability increases steeply with advancing age, it is to be expected that the utilization of health services and services provided for the elderly will also increase. In the developed countries about one quarter of those aged 65 and over suffer from mental disorders. An important risk factor for mental disorders of old age seems to be the subjective awareness of loneliness, combined with a qua

AIMS: The second Singapore Mental Health Study (SMHS) - a nationwide, cross-sectional, epidemiological survey - was initiated in 2016 with the intent of tracking the state of mental health of the general population in Singapore. The study employed the same methodology as the first survey initiated in 2010. The SMHS 2016 aimed to (i) establish the 12-month and lifetime prevalence and correlates of major depressive disorder (MDD), dysthymia, bipolar disorder, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) (which included alcohol abuse and d

Rates of psychiatric diagnosis, medical morbidity, and suicide risk are notably high among incarcerated individuals. However, engaging these individuals in community-based health care settings can be a challenge. Among justice-involved individuals who do access services, community-based health care settings may lack available resources to effectively conduct comprehensive assessments that inform evidence-based conceptualization. We propose forensic mental health assessment (FMHA) as a critical opportunity to enhance service delivery for this at-risk population. In particular, within the scope

The interface between mental health services and the criminal justice system presents challenges both for professionals and patients. Both systems are stressed and inherently complex. Section 136 of the Mental Health Act is unusual being both an aspect of the Mental Health Act and a power of arrest. It has a long and controversial history related to concerns about who has been detained and how the section was applied. More recently, Section 136 has had a public profile stemming from the use of police cells as places of safety for young, mentally disturbed individuals. This paper explores the c

Using data from the British Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), an ongoing longitudinal study of a cohort of 18,827 children born in the UK in 2000-2001, we investigate important correlates of mental health issues during childhood. MCS respondents were sampled at birth, at age 9 months, and then when they were 3, 5, 7 and 11 years old. Each sweep contains detailed information on the family's SES, parenting activities, developmental indicators, parental relationship status, and indicators of parental mental health. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the related Rutter scale were

BACKGROUND: This study examines whether the adoption of a more community based model in an inner city psychiatry service is accompanied by increasing "burnout", deteriorating mental health and decreasing job satisfaction amongst staff.
METHOD: Questionnaires were sent annually for 3 consecutive years to all mental health staff working in three adult mental health sectors in inner London. Main outcome measures were the 12-item General Health Questionnaire, Maslach Burn-out Inventory and a general job satisfaction measure.
RESULTS: There was no significant change over time in the outcome measu

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore nurses' views of their role in the screening and monitoring of the physical care needs of people with serious mental illness in a mental health service provider.
BACKGROUND: There is increasing awareness through research that people with serious mental illness disproportionately experience and die early from physical health conditions. Mental health nurses are best placed as front-line workers to offer screening, monitoring and interventions; however, their views on physical care interventions are not studied often.
DESIGN: Qualitative exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Allocation of provider time across clinical, administrative, educational, and research activities may influence job satisfaction, productivity, and quality of care, yet we know little about what determines time allocation.
AIMS: To investigate factors associated with time allocation, we surveyed all mental health providers in one Veterans Health Administration (VHA) network. We hypothesized that both facility characteristics (academic affiliation, type of organization of services, serving as a hub for treatment of severely mentally ill, facility size) and individual provider chara

The aim of this paper is to discuss issues impacting on consumer workforce participation and challenges that continue to arise for these workers, other service providers, and the mental health system. The literature identifies the following issues as problematic: role confusion and role strain; lack of support, training, and supervision structures; job titles that do not reflect actual work; poor and inconsistent pay; overwork; limited professional development; insufficient organizational adaptation to expedite consumer participation; staff discrimination and stigma; dual relationships; and th

A continuous assessment and a categorical diagnosis of the presence (i.e., flourishing) and the absence (i.e., languishing) of mental health were proposed and applied to the Midlife in the United States study data, a nationally representative sample of adults between the ages of 25 and 74 years (N = 3,032). Confirmatory factor analyses supported the hypothesis that measures of mental health (i.e., emotional, psychological, and social well-being) and mental illness (i.e., major depressive episode, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and alcohol dependence) constitute separate correlated unipol

AIM: This paper reports on a study exploring the experiences and attitudes of generic mental health nurses towards care of women with severe mental illness during the perinatal period.
BACKGROUND: Severe mental disorder in the perinatal period is a global public health concern. However, there are concerns that mental health nurses other than dedicated perinatal mental health teams may lack knowledge, skills and experience in caring for such disorders, because of their low prevalence.
METHODS: Sixteen generic Registered Mental Nurses working in public adult mental health services participated

OBJECTIVE: Despite federal parity legislation, gaps in access to behavioral health care persist across the United States. Stronger parity implementation has been associated with an improved system-level mental health infrastructure. The authors determined whether parity and higher per capita expenditures lead to better client-level access and outcomes.
METHODS: This analysis of individual-level data extends previous system-level work by examining client-level outcomes across the top 10 and bottom 10 states for per capita state mental health agency (SMHA) expenditures and parity implementation

BACKGROUND: The National Mental Health Survey was borne out of the felt need for a comprehensive epidemiological survey on mental health to understand the magnitude of psychiatric morbidities in India to aid in mental health policymaking, service planning, and delivery. Kerala was one of the 12 surveyed states, representing southern India.
AIMS: To estimate the prevalence and pattern of various mental illnesses and substance use disorders in a representative sample from Kerala state.
