Housing instability and mental health among renters in the michigan recession and recovery study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether housing instability-inclusive of eviction, homelessness, moving in with others, moving for cost reasons, or frequent moves-is associated with mental health among renters in the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2007-09. STUDY DESIGN: A panel survey study. METHODS: We used data from the Michigan Recession and Recovery Study (2009-10, 2011 and 2013), a population-representative sample of working-aged adults, and logistic regression with propensity score weights to examine the association between housing instability over a year and a half and anxiety attack or de

The Role of Courtyards within Acute Mental Health Wards: Designing with Recovery in Mind.

The role of courtyards and other outdoor spaces in the recovery of acute mental healthcare users has been gaining international appreciation and recognition. However, the physical properties and conditions necessary for therapeutic and rehabilitative engagement remain to be clearly established. This paper contributes to that knowledge by triangulating evidence from the literature, exemplar case studies of good practice and first-hand accounts of the experiences of staff and service users from four acute mental health facilities. The findings are then aligned with a well-established recovery fr

Music Activities and Mental Health Recovery: Service Users' Perspectives Presented in the CHIME Framework.

Internationally, mental health service developments are increasingly informed by the principles of recovery, and the availability of arts and creative activities are becoming more common as part of provision. Mental health service users' experiences, reflecting on the complex nature of using music participation in recovery are, however, limited. This essay considers literature that explores how music can support mental health service users in a recovery process. We have selected studies that include a broad spectrum of music activities, as well as literature considering various concepts about

Use of mental health services among victims of crime: frequency, correlates, and subsequent recovery.

The use of mental health services was examined within a sample of 392 victims of crime who were generally representative of that population in Kentucky. Respondents were interviewed twice at a 6-month interval. Of these victims, 12% had contact with mental health professionals within the first few months postcrime. Hierarchical discriminant analyses revealed that use of mental health services was most prevalent when depressive symptoms were present and the crime involved violence. Among victims of violence, urban residence, high social support, internal locus of control, and prior crime experi

Service and infrastructure needs to support recovery programmes for Indigenous community mental health consumers.

Mental health is a major concern in Indigenous communities, as Indigenous people experience poorer health outcomes generally, and poorer social and emotional well-being throughout their lives, compared to non-Indigenous populations. Interviews were conducted with 20 mental health workers from a housing assistance programme for Indigenous clients with mental illness. Service and infrastructure needs identified to support clients were classified under the following overarching theme 'supports along the road to recovery'. Subthemes were: (i) It is OK to seek help; (ii) linking in to the local com

The association between client characteristics and recovery in California's comprehensive community mental health programs.

OBJECTIVES: In November 2004, California voters passed the Mental Health Services Act, which allocated more than $3 billion for comprehensive community mental health programs. We examined whether these county-level programs, known as "full service partnerships," promoted independent living arrangements (i.e., recovery) among their clients. METHODS: We used Markov chain models to identify probabilities of residential transitions among 8 living arrangements (n = 9208 adults followed up to 4 years). We modeled these transitions on the basis of patterns of program participation and clinical and s

The governance of sexuality in a Recovery-oriented mental health service: Psychosis, consumers and clinical approaches.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT: The intersection of sexuality and psychosis has a long history, yet research in this area has been minimal over the past few decades. Mental health clinicians practice from within the confines of a mental health system that is founded on a conflict between containment and care and that positions the consumer as an object of care. At the same time, mental health services often have a Recovery approach to care. This presents a difficulty and tension in mental health clinical work because the Recovery approach is opposed to positioning the consumer as an object. WHA

Let's talk about recovery in mental health: an international Delphi study of experts by experience.

AIMS: The concept of recovery is featured in the strategic plans of the World Health Organization as well as in other national mental health plans; however, there have been differing interpretations of what it means. This article aims to achieve a consensus on the key aspects of recovery in mental health from the perspective of movements of users and survivors of psychiatry at an international level. Four specific objectives were proposed in this study: (1) to identify what recovery in mental health means, (2) to identify the indicators that a person is progressing in their recovery, (3) to de

Recovery of mental health parameters after ablation in patients with premature ventricular complex induced cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of premature ventricular complex-induced cardiomyopathy (PVC-CMP) is based on the presence of common PVCs associated with cardiomyopathy without a reasonable etiology for the cardiomyopathy. The treatment strategies for PVCs include radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) and drug therapy. In addition to physiological symptoms, PVCs also cause psychological symptoms. Impaired quality of life and sleep quality parameters have been observed in these patients. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of RFCA treatment on cardiac function and psychiatric health

We-Care-Well: exploring the personal recovery of mental health caregivers through Participatory Action Research.

Family caregivers play a critical role in supporting the recovery journeys of their loved ones, yet the recovery journeys of family caregivers have not been well-explored. Using a Participatory Action Research approach, we explore the personal recovery journeys of family caregivers for individuals with mental illness. This case study involved piloting and exploring the impact of a novel online workshop series offered to mental health caregivers at Ontario Shores Center for Mental Health Sciences. Recovery courses and workshops conventionally engage patients living with mental health conditions

Identifying Priorities for Enhancing Village Health Volunteer's Mental Health Recovery Practices in Thai Rural Communities: A Nominal Group Technique Study.

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization (WHO) and Thailand's national policy both advocate for recovery-oriented, community-based mental healthcare. Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) in Thailand have limited involvement in mental health services despite their pivotal role in Thai primary healthcare, especially in rural settings. This study aims to engage stakeholders to identify and prioritise key areas for VHVs' role expansion, stigma reduction, training needs, and common mental health conditions, thereby enhancing VHVs' contributions to recovery-oriented mental healthcare in rural Thai communit

The mental health recovery movement and family therapy, part I: consumer-led reform of services to persons diagnosed with severe mental illness.

In 2004, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a consensus statement on mental health recovery based on the New Freedom Commission's recommendation that public mental health organizations adopt a "recovery" approach to severe and persistent mental illness, including services to those dually diagnosed with mental health and substance abuse issues. By formally adopting and promoting a recovery orientation to severe mental illness, the United States followed suit with other first-world nations that have also adopted this approach based on two decades of research by the World Hea
