Maternal and neonatal effects of 1% and 2% mepivacaine for lumbar extradural analgesia.

Continuous lumbar extradural analgesia with mepivacaine was administered to two groups of patients in normal labour. One group (26 patients: 1% mepivacaine) received a mean total dose of 342 mg (4.93 mg/kg) per patient, and developed a mean blood concentration of mepivacaine at delivery of 1.82 mug/ml. The neonatal umbilical vein concentration was 0.84 mug/ml. The other group (30 patients: 2% mepivacaine) received a mean total dose of 776 mg (11.65 mg/kg) per patient, and developed a mean blood concentration of mepivacaine at delivery of 3.47 mug/ml. The neonatal umbilical vein concentration w

Retrospective comparison of chloroprocaine and mepivacaine in spinal anesthesia for same-day discharge TKA.

INTRODUCTION: Chloroprocaine is a rapid, short-acting spinal anesthetic that may facilitate quicker postoperative recovery in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, limited literature exists regarding its use in patients undergoing same-day discharge (SDD) TKA. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and safety of chloroprocaine compared with those of mepivacaine. METHODS: This retrospective study of 178 patients who underwent primary TKA at a single ambulatory surgery center from March 2022 to June 2023 compared chloroprocaine (n = 114) and mepivacaine (n = 64) spinal anesthesia. The stability and microbial contamination of bupivacaine, lidocaine and mepivacaine used for lameness diagnostics in horses.

Local anaesthetics (LAs) are frequently used for diagnostic procedures in equine veterinary practice. The objective of this study was to investigate the physico-chemical stability and bacterial contamination of bupivacaine, lidocaine and mepivacaine used for lameness examinations in horses. The LAs were stored in 12 different groups at different temperatures (-18 °C to 70 °C), light intensities and in common veterinary field conditions for up to 16 months. The pH, presence of bacterial contamination and concentrations of LAs and methylparaben (a preservative present in lidocaine) were determin

Intrathecal mepivacaine and prilocaine are less neurotoxic than lidocaine in a rat intrathecal model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Histologic evidence of the comparative neurotoxicity of lidocaine, mepivacaine, and prilocaine is incomplete. We compared the intrathecal neurotoxicity in rats among these 3 drugs based on morphologic and neurofunctional findings. METHODS: Rats (n=169) randomly received 0.12 microL/g of 0%, 2%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, or 20% lidocaine, mepivacaine, or prilocaine or 25% glucose dissolved in distilled water via a chronically implanted intrathecal catheter. The effect of the agents on neurofunction was evaluated by movement of the hind limb (behavior test) and by sensory thresh

A control, double-blind comparison of mepivacaine injection versus saline injection for myofascial pain.

In a double-blind study 28 patients with acute, localised muscle pain received four local injections of mepivacaine 0.5%, and 25 patients with the same type of pain received local injections of an equivalent volume of physiological saline. The group receiving saline tended to have more relief of pain, especially after the first injection. The results thus show that pain relief is not due merely to the local anaesthetic. The study therefore raises questions about the mechanism by which local injections into muscle relieves pain, since there is the possibility that a similar effect might also be

Intrauterine Mepivacaine Instillation vs Placebo for Pain During IUD Placement: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Concern about pain during intrauterine device (IUD) placement is common and reduces selection of an IUD. Reducing procedure-related pain may support informed contraceptive decision-making and patient autonomy and has also been associated with improved patient satisfaction and procedural experience. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether intrauterine instillation of mepivacaine reduces pain during IUD placement in nulliparous individuals. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted at 11 outpatient gynecology, maternal heal

Mepivacaine vs Bupivacaine Spinal Anesthesia in Total Hip Arthroplasty at an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

BACKGROUND: Mepivacaine spinal anesthetic may facilitate more rapid postoperative recovery in joint arthroplasty than bupivacaine. This study compared recovery, pain, and complications between the 2 anesthetics in anterior-approach total hip arthroplasty (THA) at a free-standing ambulatory surgery center (ASC). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of 282 consecutive patients with mean age 55.7 ± 8.8 years and body mass index 30.6 ± 5.3 who underwent THA at an ASC from November 2018 to July 2020 compares mepivacaine (n = 141) vs bupivacaine (n = 141) spinal anesthesia, a transition made in

Continuous brachial plexus infusion of butorphanol-mepivacaine mixtures for analgesia after upper extremity surgery.

We have recently reported that continuous administration of butorphanol into the brachial plexus neurovascular sheath provided superior analgesia compared with that obtained with continuous i.v. administration. Furthermore, we found that analgesia was most pronounced when a mixture of mepivacaine and butorphanol was given and that butorphanol alone ranked next. In this study, we increased the dose of butorphanol, compared with that used in our previous reports, and an initial bolus dose of butorphanol was administered into the brachial plexus neurovascular sheath just after surgery had ended.

Supraclavicular block with Mepivacaine vs Ropivacaine, their impact on postoperative pain: a prospective randomised study.

BACKGROUND: Supraclavicular block (SCB) with long-acting local anaesthetic is commonly used for surgical repair of distal radial fractures (DRF). Studies have shown a risk for rebound pain when the block fades. This randomised single-centre study aimed to compare pain and opioid consumption the first three days post-surgery between SCB-mepivacaine vs. SCB-ropivacaine, with general anaesthesia (GA) as control. METHODS: Patients (n = 90) with ASA physical status 1-3 were prospectively randomised to receive; SCB with mepivacine 1%, 25-30 ml (n = 30), SCB with ropivacaine 0.5%, 25-30 ml (n = 30)

The effects of clonidine added to mepivacaine for paronychia surgery under axillary brachial plexus block.

We hypothesized that onset of sensory block is delayed in infected versus healthy tissues within the same nerve distribution after axillary brachial plexus block (ABPB) and that clonidine added to mepivacaine would enhance anesthesia and postoperative analgesia. Forty-one outpatients undergoing thumb/index paronychia surgery under ABPB were randomly assigned to receive in a double-blind fashion 400 mg mepivacaine plus either 100 microg clonidine (clonidine group, n = 21) or 2 mL saline (placebo group, n = 20). Onset of sensory block in the infected area was delayed compared with healthy areas

Treatment efficacy of 0.9% saline and mepivacaine infiltration with Dermojet® in eliminating plantar warts.

BACKGROUND: Plantar warts are benign, epidermal neoformations, viral, and easily transmitted. Although 30% of these warts disappear spontaneously, the American Association of Dermatology recommends treatment if they cause pain or bleeding. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of Dermojet® infiltration using a solution composed of equal parts of 0.9% saline and 2% mepivacaine in the treatment of plantar warts, and to identify the type of necrosis achieved at 7-10 days after the infiltration (M1 sample) and at 15-17 days (M2 sample). METHOD: In this analytical prospe

Antinociceptive effects of topical mepivacaine in a rat model of HIV-associated peripheral neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND: A consequence of HIV infection is sensory neuropathy, a debilitating condition that degrades the quality of life of HIV patients. Furthermore, life-extending antiretroviral treatment may exacerbate HIV sensory neuropathy. Analgesics that relieve other neuropathic pains show little or no efficacy in ameliorating HIV sensory neuropathy. Thus, there is a need for analgesics for people with this particular pain. While lidocaine is used in the management of painful peripheral neuropathies, another local anesthetic mepivacaine, with a potentially improved bioavailability, could be utiliz

A double-blind study of axillary brachial plexus block by 0.75% ropivacaine or 2% mepivacaine.

Axillary brachial plexus block using 20 mL of 0.75% ropivacaine or 2% mepivacaine was compared in a prospective, randomized, double-blind study of two groups of 15 patients. The times to onset of sensory and motor block and to resolution of motor block, as well as the time to onset and degree of post-operative pain were recorded by an observer blinded to the identity of drug. Times to onset of sensory block were similar in the two groups (ropivacaine 10 min, mepivacaine 8 min). Resolution of motor block in the operated hand and the time to first requirement of post-operative analgesia occurred

Tramadol added to 1.5% mepivacaine for axillary brachial plexus block improves postoperative analgesia dose-dependently.

UNLABELLED: Adjuncts to local anesthetics for peripheral plexus blockade may enhance the quality and duration of anesthesia and postoperative analgesia. The analgesic, tramadol, has a unique mechanism of action that suggests efficacy as such an adjunct. It displays a central analgesic and peripheral local anesthetic effect. We designed a prospective, randomized, controlled and double-blind clinical trial to assess the effect of tramadol added to brachial plexus anesthesia. One-hundred patients scheduled for carpal tunnel release surgery under brachial plexus anesthesia were randomized into fou

Knockdown of FXYD2 inhibits mepivacaine-induced cardiomyocyte injury by activating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a severe cardiovascular event associated with various molecular alterations. This study aimed to explore the intricate relationship between mepivacaine, a local anesthetic, and MI by identifying and characterizing overlapping genes through a comprehensive analysis. METHODS: Differential expression analysis was performed using the GSE19339 data set to identify overlapping genes between MI and mepivacaine, and functional enrichment analysis as well as expression verification was performed. Rat cardiomyocyte H9c2 cells were divided into four groups: cont

The antimicrobial activity of bupivacaine, lidocaine and mepivacaine against equine pathogens: An investigation of 40 bacterial isolates.

Lameness is the most commonly reported health problem in horses, and lameness investigations which include local anaesthetic injections are routinely performed by equine practitioners. Through this process, bacteria can enter the tissues perforated by the needle and may cause local infections at the injection site. The objective of this in vitro study was to investigate if local anaesthetics at concentrations available in commercially available solutions could inhibit growth and/or kill bacteria that could be inoculated into the synovial space or soft tissues during injection. This study evalu
