[Lethal mercury poisoning due to ingestion of merthiolate].

A case of mercurial poisoning caused by ingestion of an organic mercurial compound, thimerosal, found in local antiseptic solutions. The clinical picture consisted of grave neurological symptoms which were not reversed by penicillamine and resin administration despite rapid plasma level reduction of mercury. We call attention to this case because of the widespread availability of antiseptic solutions containing mercurial compounds and alcohol.

[Neurologic symptoms in inhalation poisoning with metallic mercury].

Nineteen caisson workers had been exposed to metallic mercury vapours while digging tubes underneath the first district of Vienna (exposure between 470 and 2440 min; mean 1621 min). The blood mercury values on admission were between 29 and 166 micrograms/l (mean 75 +/- 34 micrograms/l). The main findings reported are clinical neurologic symptoms, psychic complaints, neurographic results and autonomic parameters (cardiovascular reflexes): 47% complained of headache and tiredness, 37% showed tremor and suffered from sleep disturbances, 26% showed hypersalivation, 16% changes in handwriting, and

An acute mercuric mercury poisoning: chemical speciation of hair mercury shows a peak of inorganic mercury value.

A woman ingested a dose of sublimate (approximately 0.9 g) in an attempted suicide. She survived and recovered in response to a combination of therapies including chelate (BAL) therapy, plasma exchange, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Serum inorganic mercury concentration, urinary inorganic mercury excretion and hair inorganic and organic mercury and selenium concentrations, along the length from the scalp to the distal part, were measured. Longitudinal analysis of hair, revealed a peak in inorganic mercury corresponding to the time of mercury ingestion. Organic mercury and selenium in

Review article: acute inorganic mercury vapor inhalation poisoning.

Mercury contamination is a serious environmental problem worldwide. Two primary sources of contamination are dumping of large quantities of inorganic mercury and exposure in the mining industry. Although the actual fatal level of mercury vapor is not known, exposure to more than 1-2 mg/m3 of elemental mercury vapor (Hg0) for a few hours causes acute chemical bronchiolitis and pneumonitis. Two hours after exposure, lung injury appears as hyaline membrane formation, and finally, extensive pulmonary fibrosis occurs. Clinical findings correlate with the duration of exposure, the concentration of m

MR findings of Minamata disease--organic mercury poisoning.

We describe MR findings in patients with Minamata disease who have been followed for a long time. All patients examined were affected after daily eating of a large quantity of methylmercury-contaminated seafood, from 1955 to 1958, and showed typical neurological findings. On MR images, the visual cortex, the cerebellar vermis and hemispheres, and the postcentral cortex are significantly atrophic in Minamata disease. The visual cortex is slightly hypointense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted images, probably representing the pathologic changes of status spongiosus. MRI can d

Mercury oxycyanide and mercuric cyanide poisoning: two cases.

BACKGROUND: Although cyanide poisoning can be serious or fatal, it is typically described as mild when the cyanide is ingested in the form of either mercuric cyanide or mercury oxycyanide. METHODS: We studied two patients with acute cyanide poisoning following ingestion of one of these two agents in each case. RESULTS: Both patients demonstrated features of life-threatening cyanide poisoning, including hemodynamic instability, severe lactic acidosis, and high blood cyanide concentration. One of the patients died, while the second demonstrated signs of mercury intoxication (acute renal failur

[DMSP treatment in acute sublimate (mercury chloride) poisoning].

A 19-year-old girl was treated for a heavy mercury chloride intoxication (3 g HgCl2) with 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate (DMSP) and dialyses. The anuric stage lasted for 10 days. With DMSP the mercury clearance by hemodialysis was 3,5-5,0 ml/min, with BAL 0,6 ml/min. DMSP is an effective watersoluble mercury-chelator and is subjectively better tolerated and less toxic than BAL. The anuric stage was probably not shortened.

Chronic mercury poisoning from a single brief exposure.

For a number of years we have observed six patients whose illness began after inhaling high concentrations of mercury vapor in a single exposure. They all had symptoms of acute mercury poisoning with fever, chills, chest pain, and weakness. Three men had diffuse pulmonary infiltrates on chest x-ray suggesting chemical pneumonitis. Two of the men excreted large amounts of mercury in their urine two days after exposure following BAL therapy. Their chronic symptoms differed somewhat, but many complained of nervousness, irritability, lack of ambition, and loss of sexual desire. Chronic mercury poi

Acute Mercury Poisoning in a Group of School Children.

OBJECTIVE: Elemental mercury is a toxic liquid element that is used widely in the home, medicine, agriculture, and industry. It is readily vaporized and inhaled at room temperature. Thereby, inhalation can cause acute or chronic poisoning. Mercury can be found in environmental naturally find but some dangers sources give rise to contaminations. It can be very dangerous to all living organisms, especially children. METHODS: This study presents the features of mercury poisoning in a group of pediatric cases. Data were obtained for 29 pediatric cases exposed to elemental mercury in a high school

The effects of glutathione glycoside in methyl mercury poisoning.

The use of glutathione glycoside (GSH-glyc), a compound newly synthesized in our laboratory, was highly effective in raising cellular GSH levels both in vitro and in vivo. Based on mass spectrometry and 1H NMR data, the structure of GSH-glyc was determined to be that of an S-glycoside. Rapid GSH uptake was observed by confocal microscopy in both A549 cells and mouse astrocytes following incubation with GSH-glyc. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) and per oral administration of GSH-glyc in C57BL/6J mice raised GSH concentrations in brain and liver to significantly higher levels than normal. Methyl mercury

Susceptibility of Nubian goats to mercury poisoning in the Sudan.

Twelve Nubian goats were given single or repeated oral dosages of mercuric chloride at 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg and died or were killed in extremis at various times after dosing (18 hours-18 days). The main signs of poisoning were anorexia, frothing at the mouth, respiratory distress, epistaxis, bloat, diarrhoea, abnormal posture and recumbency. An increase in the activity of GOT and in the concentrations of urea and inorganic phosphate and a decrease in total protein and calcium concentrations in the serum were detected. The main lesions were dilatation and necrosis of the proximal convoluted tubu

The role of chelation in the treatment of arsenic and mercury poisoning.

Chelation for heavy metal intoxication began more than 70 years ago with the development of British anti-lewisite (BAL; dimercaprol) in wartime Britain as a potential antidote the arsenical warfare agent lewisite (dichloro[2-chlorovinyl]arsine). DMPS (unithiol) and DMSA (succimer), dithiol water-soluble analogs of BAL, were developed in the Soviet Union and China in the late 1950s. These three agents have remained the mainstay of chelation treatment of arsenic and mercury intoxication for more than half a century. Animal experiments and in some instances human data indicate that the dithiol ch

[Taki Onqoy: mercury poisoning epidemic in 16TH century Huamanga].

Taki Onqoy is a syndrome that corresponds to the poisoning from exposure to mercury. It appeared as a result of the exploitation of the mercury mines of Paras and Huancavelica in Peru during the 16th century. The Cachexia mercurial, the last stage of the disease, would be associated with the idea of pishtaco. The Taki Onqoy in 16th-century Peru represents the largest epidemic of mercury poisoning known to humanity.

Mercury poisoning with tooth loss: an 1813 case report.

During the War of 1812, the medical surgeon and his "mate" were responsible for the soldiers' dental care; there were no dentists employed by the United States Army. Official reports of dental treatment are, therefore, rare.
