Unduly tight plaster hand casts may narrow the metacarpal joint space, hindering rehabilitation. This study investigated how metacarpal narrowing affects grip strength. Forty-two adult volunteers with no other pathology were included. Dominant and non-dominant hand grip strength was measured with a digital hand dynamometer (Jamar plus, China). Metacarpal width was measured with a metal caliper, and the caliper was then fixed at 10% narrowing of the joint space, and a second measurement of grip strength was taken. The measurements were thus taken twice each in the dominant and non-dominant hand

A 2-mo-old, 90-kg, intact male camel (Camelus dromedarius) was admitted for surgical removal of a supernumerary digit associated with the medial aspect of the right carpus and metacarpus. Radiographic views of the carpus and metacarpus revealed the supernumerary digit articulating with the middle carpal joint via an extra carpal bone. The supernumerary digit consisted of three bones. Surgical removal of the supernumerary digit was recommended to restore normal limb conformation, limit the possibility of future lameness, and improve the cosmetic appearance of the limb. Complete surgical removal

The relationship of muscle and bone structure to limb weakness was examined in 60 Duroc pigs from 3 lines divergently selected for thoracic limb weakness. The lines were designated high, control, or low, with the low line having inferior thoracic limb structure. At approximately 100 kg, 10 pigs of each line and gender were scored for thoracic limb structure and movement. Right and left thoracic limbs were collected at slaughter. A computerized morphometric image analysis system was used to determine cross-sectional areas of muscles, bones, and soft tissues at levels through the brachium, anteb

The author describes three prototypes of a miniature distractor for the bones of hand constructed according to his own design, and its uses in clinical practice. The distractors are used for lengthening bones of the hand after injuries involving loss of the thumb or fingers, and for the treatment of patients with congenital developmental defects of the hand. Over a period of three years, the distractors were used in thirteen cases and Ilizarov's original apparatus in three cases: for the lengthening of metacarpus I in seven cases, metacarpus II in two cases, metacarpi II-IV in one case, metaca

Macrodactyly, the overgrowth of one or more fingers or toes, is a comparatively rare congenital deformity. The enlargement includes skin, subcutaneous tissue, nerve, joint and bone. The bony involvement is usually limited to phalanges and the metacarpus is rarely involved. Since 1979, 10 cases have been seen in our hospital. Among them, there were 6 cases whose giant fingers or toes were treated with epiphyseal plates removing. The postoperative results (the longest follow-up period was 9 years) were satisfying. The growth of fingers or toes was completely stopped but in one case whose toes be

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The proximal metacarpal region is a common site of origin of lameness in the performance horse. A number of disease entities are recognised as causes of proximal metacarpal lameness but a definitive diagnosis is often elusive. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is hypothesised to offer advantages over traditional imaging modalities in the investigation of proximal metacarpal pain.
OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical and imaging features of cases of lameness in racehorses arising from the proximal metacarpal region in which standing MRI identified 'bone marrow oedema-typ

We report about the indication, technique and results of 27 fractures of the base of the metacarpus I. All those fractures were treated by open reduction and screw-/plate osteosynthesis according to the AOSIF-technique. Using these implants and the technique of open reduction with an additional autologous bone graft it offers the possibility to start active motion therapy immediately after operation. Perioperative complications can be bypassed with the use of external mini-fixateur as well as in those cases of open fractures with various types of damage patterns. Total active mobility (TAM) of

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: High-resolution 3D imaging may improve the prediction and/or early identification of condylar fractures of the distal metacarpus/tarsus and reduce the frequency of breakdown injury in racehorses.
OBJECTIVES: To test the hypotheses that horses suffering condylar fractures have higher bone volume fraction (BV/TV) of the distal metacarpal epiphysis, greater subchondral bone thickness at the fracture site and higher second moment of inertia in the metacarpal midshaft as identified with high-resolution 3D imaging.

In the horse, surgical approaches for plating fractures of the ulna, radius, metacarpus, tibia, and metatarsus involved a single curvilinear skin incision and incision of the superficial fascia in a manner to prevent postoperative dehiscence. The tension side of the bones, as well as location of nerves, arteries, veins, and muscles, were the major determinants in developing these approaches for atraumatic surgery and short operative time.

A case of essential carpal osteolysis is reported. The morphological appearance of the hands is described. They showed ulnar deviation; they were short and pudgy, the carpus and metacarpus being almost absent. The fingers were normal, but the left thumb was atrophic. Radiographies of the left hand showed an almost complete disappearance of the carpus and severe irregularities of the ulna and radius. Aetiology, treatment and prognosis are briefly discussed.

(1) Background: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is increasingly used in equine practice to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries, including fractures in the distal limb. However, limited detail in the thick cortical bone of the metacarpus/metatarsus hinders accurate diagnosis. In human medicine, the addition of aluminum filters (AF) enhanced image quality while reducing radiation exposure. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of AF on image quality in CBCT scans of equine distal limbs. (2) Methods: Adult equine cadaver limbs were scanned with a mobile CBCT unit using varying tube currents

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to create a feline reference database for the length, width and slenderness (length to width ratio) of metacarpal and metatarsal bones, radius and tibia.
STUDY DESIGN: Radiographs of the radius, tibia, metacarpus and metatarsus were performed in domestic short hair cat cadavers (n = 40). Length and width of the aforementioned bones were measured in mature domestic shorthair cats and bone slenderness (length/width) and index ratios calculated.
RESULTS: A significant skeletal sex dimorphism exists in cats, with bones of the metacarpus, metatarsus, radius an

OBJECTIVE: To report the successful surgical correction of severe bilateral metacarpophalangeal valgus angular limb deformities in a seven-month-old intact male alpaca cria using curved osteotomies stabilized with type II external skeletal fixation.
METHODS: Using a 21 mm crescentic shaped oscillating saw blade, bilateral osteotomies were performed in the distal metaphyses of the fused third and fourth metacarpal bones to correct valgus angular limb deformity of the metacarpophalangeal joints. Axial alignment of each limb was achieved by medially rotating the distal metacarpus in the frontal

For complex amputation injuries and anatomical characteristic of the metacarpus, restoration to the superficial palmar arch in severe devascularized or amputated hands remains a daunting challenge. In this article, we treated a series of five cases using an arcus venosus dorsalis pedis (AVDP) graft to restore the superficial palmar arches in devascularized hands. All hands survived and satisfying function was gained. The AVDP graft may be a suitable option to restore the superficial palmar arch in devascularized hands.

We investigated 18 scaphoid fractures induced by punching. The wrist position while punching was neutral to slight palmar flexion. We postulated that the mechanism of the fracture was caused by the concentration of the external force to the second metacarpus. The forces are then dispersed to the trapezium and trapezoid, which produces shear stress at the waist of the scaphoid. In spite of the differences in mechanism, the location of the fracture was similar to fractured scaphoids caused by wrist extension injuries. Regardless of the wrist positions, the carpal scaphoid is most vulnerable to f

The authors review the past five year's case history covering the humeral arteriographies carried out for the purpose of studying the vascularization of the hand in patients presenting Raynaud-like symptomatology. It is pointed out that in the majority of cases digital arteries show significant lesions and that a certain percentage of these are accompanied by haemodynamically significant alterations of the peripheral part of arteries of the forearm and of the metacarpus. Deep general narcosis is fundamental for a correct interpretation of the angiographies. Within the cases recorded the clinic
