A bolus for the administration to cattle of metacercariae of the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica.

A gelatin-agar bolus, designed and developed for the administration of metacercariae of the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, was evaluated in adult Holstein Friesian cattle. The metacercariae, enclosed within a gelatin capsule, were placed inside the bolus and delivered to each animal using an oesophageal balling gun. At slaughter, 13 weeks after challenge, an average of 25% of the challenge dose was recovered from each liver. This percentage recovery is similar to that obtained with other known methods. The new bolus, however, offers improved handling qualities. In addition, the bolus also has

The effects of gamma irradiation on the survival and development of Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae.

The effects of gamma irradiation on the survival and development of C. sinensis metacercariae were studied to evaluate the feasibility of irradiation as a control measure for clonorchiasis. Pseudorasbora parva were collected at an endemic river of clonorchiasis and were used for irradiation of the fluke in three schemes. The first (Scheme 1) was irradiation of the isolated metacercariae from the fish followed by infection to experimental rats. The second (Scheme 2) was irradiation of the fish, and then the metacercariae were isolated and infected to rats. The third (Scheme 3) was irradiation o

New Record of Thapariella anastomusa (Trematoda: Thapariellidae) Metacercariae in Northern Thailand.

The family Thapariellidae has been reported in only 3 countries since 1990. The objective of this study was to identify Thapariella anastomusa metacercariae in snails in Thailand based on morphological traits using a light (LM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A total of 94 Filopaludina snails were collected and identified as 50 F. martensi martensi and 44 F. doliaris. Metacercariae of T. anastomusa were recovered from the snails by the crushing method. The overall prevalence was 22.3% (21/94), and the mean intensity was 17.0 per snail. The prevalence in F. martensi martensi was 24.0%

Zoonotic trematode metacercariae in fish from Phnom Penh and Pursat, Cambodia.

A survey was performed to investigate the infection status of freshwater fish with zoonotic trematode metacercariae in Phnom Penh and Pursat Province, Cambodia. All collected fish with ice were transferred to our laboratory and examined using the artificial digestion method. In fish from Phnom Penh, 2 kinds of metacercariae (Opisthorchis viverrini and Haplorchis yokogawai) were detected. O. viverrini metacercariae were positive in 37 (50.0%) of 74 fish in 11 species (average no. metacercariae/fish, 18.6). H. yokogawai metacercariae were detected in 23 (57.5%) of 40 fish in 5 species (average n

Gene expression profiling in mouse liver infected with Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae.

Clonorchis sinensis, the parasite that causes clonorchiasis, is endemic in many Asian countries, and infection with the organism drives changes in the liver tissues of the host. However, information regarding the molecular events in clonorchiasis remains limited, and little is currently known about host-pathogen interactions in clonorchiasis. In this study, we assessed the gene expression profiles in mice livers via DNA microarray analysis 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks after induced metacercariae infection. Functional clustering of the gene expression profile showed that the immunity-involved genes wer

Attempted immunisation of sheep against Fasciola hepatica using gamma-irradiated metacercariae.

The potential of gamma-irradiated Fasciola hepatica metacercariae to vaccinate sheep against fascioliasis was examined. The effect of the size of the inocula of irradiated metacercariae and the level of gamma-irradiation on the recovery of non-irradiated fluke was assessed following homologous challenge. Groups of Merino wethers were vaccinated with a single infection of either 500 or 2000 metacercariae, previously exposed to either 30, 100 or 400 Gy of gamma-irradiation. No significant reduction of fluke burdens were observed in any group, although a nonsignificant 20% reduction was observed

Survival and infectivity of Paragonimus westermani Metacercariae in soy sauce-marinated crayfish.

Paragonimus westermani, a zoonotic lung fluke, causes respiratory symptoms resembling tuberculosis. In Asia, human infections typically occur through the consumption of raw or marinated freshwater crabs or crayfish containing P. westermani metacercariae. With increasing global food trade and occasional exposure during international travel, cases have been reported in non-endemic regions, raising significant food safety concerns. In this study, naturally infected freshwater crayfish (Cambaroides similis) were collected from Haenam, South Korea. Crayfish were marinated in soy sauce containing ei

Morphological and molecular characterisation of three Indian Neascus-type metacercariae (Digenea: Diplostomidae).

Diplostomid digeneans are important parasites whose larval stages infect freshwater snails and fish as first and second intermediate hosts respectively. Diplostomid digeneans as adults are parasitic in many fish-eating birds and mammals. Our understanding of the species diversity of diplostomid digeneans remains incomplete, especially in the Indian sub-continent. Here, we describe three Neascus-type metacercariae (N. hanumanthai, N. gussevi, and N. xenentodoni) from freshwater fish specimens of Channa punctata (Bloch 1793), Trichogaster fasciata (Bloch and Schneider 1801) and Xenentodon cancil

Occurrence and effect of trematode metacercariae in two endangered killifishes from Greece.

We report digeneans (Diplostomidae, Crassiphialinae) in the endangered freshwater fishes Valencia letourneuxi and Valencia robertae, endemics of Western Greece. Digenean metacercariae occurred in two forms in the abdominal cavity, excysted and encysted, the latter attached to the gonads, liver and alimentary tract. Parasites were, using morphological and molecular techniques, identified as two representatives of Crassiphialinae, specifically part of the Posthodiplostomum-Ornithodiplostomum clade. The spatial, seasonal, and age class variation in parasite prevalence was examined. Autumn parasit

Survival of Haplorchis taichui metacercariae in Lab-Pla, Thai traditional food preparation.

Lab-Pla is a famous kind of Thai traditional food in northern and northeasthern Thailand. Consumption of uncooked Lab-Pla can lead to trematode infection because cyprinoid fish serve as the 2nd intermediate hosts of trematodes. The preparation of Lab-Pla can be made in different ways, depending on seasonings used in different places. The effect of the seasonings used in Lab-Pla on the survival of Haplorchis taichui metacercariae were, therefore, determined. The methodology was done by the following: 100 g of chopped Siamese mud carp fish (Henicorhynchus siamensis) were used for each experiment

Evaluation of Echinostoma liei worm, metacercaria and redia antigens for schistosomiasis control.

While chemotherepeutic drugs, such as praziquantel, oxamniquine and metrifonate, are currently considered safe and effective drugs for schistosomiasis treatment, reinfection occurs frequently after drug treatment. Thus, a vaccine is sought to provide long-term treatment. Antigens from worm, metacercaria and redia of Echinostoma liei (E. liei) were purified using CNBr-activated Sepharose column, then used for immunization of mice prior to infection with Schistosomiasis mansoni. Worm burden, hepatic and intestinal eggs and oogram count was significantly reduced and that was reflected in normaliz
