Dynamic Binding of Alkali-Metal Ions in a Metalloporphyrin Cage: Impact on Redox Catalysis.

The influence of local electrostatic environments on catalytic reactivity is well established in enzymatic systems, but their systematic implementation in synthetic catalysts remains limited. Here, we investigate the dynamic binding of alkali-metal cations to a cobalt porphyrin cage complex as a strategy to modulate its redox properties and catalytic activity toward CO2 reduction (CO2RR). Electrochemical studies reveal that the Co1 + → Co0 redox potential is highly sensitive to the identity of the electrolyte cation, with K+ and Cs+ inducing the largest positive shifts (236 and 225 mV, respect

Three Oxidative Addition Routes of Alkali Metal Aluminyls to Dihydridoaluminates and Reactivity with CO2.

Three distinct routes are reported to the soluble, dihydridoaluminate compounds, AM[Al(NONDipp )(H)2 ] (AM=Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; [NONDipp ]2- =[O(SiMe2 NDipp)2 ]2- ; Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) starting from the alkali metal aluminyls, AM[Al(NONDipp )]. Direct H2 hydrogenation of the heavier analogues (AM=Rb, Cs) produced the first examples of structurally characterized rubidium and caesium dihydridoaluminates, although harsh conditions were required for complete conversion. Using 1,4-cyclohexadiene (1,4-CHD) as an alternative hydrogen source in transfer hydrogenation reactions provided a lower energy

Differentiation of tetracyclines and their 4-epimers by mass spectrometry of the alkali metal adduct ions.

Tetracyclines (TCs) are a family of broad-spectrum antibiotics. During the manufacturing process or storage, epimerization of tetracyclines could occur, leading to 4-epimers which are nearly inactive. From an analytical point of view, isomers are often difficult to distinguish. Previously, four pairs of TCs (oxytetracycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, chlortetracycline and their respective 4-epimers) were differentiated by mass spectrometry (MS) through protonated ions. However, they do not follow common rules and so it is still quite difficult to differentiate between them. In order to solve

Alkali metal-sulfur dioxide complexes stabilized by halogenated closo-dodecaborate anions.

The alkali metal salts (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) of the perchlorinated closo-dodecaborate [B(12)Cl(12)](2-) were prepared by reaction of [NEt(3)H](2)[B(12)Cl(12)] with the corresponding alkali metal hydroxide. Crystallization of M(2)[B(12)Cl(12)] from liquid sulfur dioxide gave the sulfur dioxide complexes [Li(2)(SO(2))(8)][B(12)Cl(12)], Na(2)[B(12)Cl(12)].4SO(2), K(2)[B(12)Cl(12)].8SO(2), Rb(2)[B(12)Cl(12)].4SO(2), and Cs(2)[B(12)Cl(12)].SO(2), which were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In this work structurally characterized SO(2) complexes of the alkali metal cations K(+) a

Activation of Semicore Electrons in Alkali Metals and Their Role in the B1-B2 Phase Transition under Pressure.

Alkali fluorides are often thought of as archetypical ionic compounds whose structures can be understood in terms of the packing of rigid spheres. At ambient pressure, they assume the rocksalt (B1) structure, while under only a few GPa of pressure, the cesium chloride (B2) structure, with higher coordination numbers, is assumed for KF, RbF, and CsF. NaF requires almost 10 times more pressure to undergo this same phase transition, which has not been observed for LiF. Herein, we provide a detailed analysis, based upon quantum chemical calculations, explaining this behavior. We show that for the

Cis/Trans Stereoselectivity of 6,6"-Dibromo-2,2':6',2"-Terpyridine Steered by Alkali Metal Salts on Metal Surfaces.

Controlling stereoselectivity in competing on-surface reactions remains a fundamental challenge for the bottom-up synthesis of covalent nanostructures. Herein, we employ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate on-surface self-assembly and reaction of 6,6"-dibromo-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (DT) on Au(111) and Cu(111). After thermal annealing, DT molecules yield trans-chain structures and the nitrogen-doped porous nanocarbon networks (n-NPCNs). The resulting 3-NPCNs exhibit an electronic bandgap of ∼

A Computational Study of Alkali Metal-Anchored 3D-COFs for Efficient CO2 Capture and Separation: Effects of Metal Type and Concentration.

Excessive CO2 emissions have promoted carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) as an advanced technology to alleviate environmental degradation. Developing high-performance adsorbents is essential for effective CCUS processes. In this study, a 3D-COF constructed with CuPcOC and benzidine was designed and incorporated with alkali metals (AMs) to form 3D-COF-nAMs. The CO2 capture and separation effects of AM doping types and concentrations were systematically explored (AM = K, Na, Li; n = 1, 2). The results showed that CO2 adsorption capacity increased with the atomic number of the AMs, w

Thermochemical Micro-Explosion for Prompt Thrombolysis via Proximal Injection of Liquid Alkali Metal.

Thrombotic vascular diseases contribute to significant global mortality, yet current therapeutic strategies face persistent challenges, including bleeding risks, suboptimal efficiency, and procedural complexity. Here, we report a micro-explosive thermochemical thrombolysis (METCT) therapy via proximal injection of liquid alkali metal (LAM) encapsulated in dimethyl silicone (LAM@oil), which enables prompt, efficient, and safe vascular recanalization within an ultrafast timeframe (< 90 s). This LAM@oil system effectively disrupts thrombus tissue through a synergistic triple-action mechanism: mec

Alkali metal cation effects for rapid C-H activation by iron(0) complexes.

Ion pairing with alkali metal cations offers a novel way to enhance the rate of C-H activation. This strategy is demonstrated here using diketiminate-supported iron(0) complexes, which previously were shown to activate the C-H bond of benzene slowly (hours at room temperature) and did not reach completion before decomposition. However, by removing a crown ether that sequesters the alkali metal countercation, there is rapid C-H oxidative addition in less than a minute at ambient temperature, showing that alkali cation effects can strongly influence C-H activation, even with the more weakly inte

Periodic Alkali Metal Modulation of Carbon Nitride for Volcano-Type Photocatalytic H2O2 Production.

Alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) are systematically doped into graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, CN) to investigate the periodic regulation of photocatalytic H2O2 production. Using ethanol as a sacrificial agent under visible-light irradiation, the H2O2 generation rate exhibits a pronounced volcano-type trend along the Li-Na-K-Rb-Cs series, with K+-doped CN achieving the highest activity of 1795 µmol g-1 h-1, representing a 2.1-fold enhancement over pristine CN. Mechanistic studies reveal that alkali metal ions incorporation modulates the electronic structure of CN through orbital in

The coordination of alkali-metal nickelates to organic π-systems: synthetic, structural and spectroscopic insights.

Low-valent nickelates have recently been shown to be key intermediates in challenging cross-coupling reactions using aryl ethers as electrophiles. Key for the success of these transformations is the activation of the substrate through π-coordination to the nickelate intermediate, however there is still limited knowledge about the fundamental structure and coordination chemistry of these heterobimetallic complexes. Herein, we report the synthesis, structures, and spectroscopic analysis of a diverse family of alkali-metal nickelates derived from phenyl-alkali-metal reagents and Ni(ttt-CDT), wher

Alkali Metal Mediated Redox Tuning in Bis(μ-OH) Dinickel(II) Complexes.

Redox-inactive metal ions act in tandem with redox-active transition metals in biological, molecular, and solid-state systems to precisely tune reactivity. Notwithstanding, mildly Lewis acidic alkali cations are rarely studied in this context, despite their prevalence in both cellular and electrochemical media. Herein, we disclose a structurally characterized series of monovalent Lewis acids (Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) adducted to a bis(μ-OH) dinickel diamond core. Spectroscopic characterization demonstrates that the oxygenic binding pocket of the tripodal NNNO-chelate maintains this structure in

Electronic Structure Reorganization in MPS3 via d-Shell-Selective Alkali Metal Doping.

Semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition-metal thiophosphates (MPS3) offer promising opportunities for spintronic applications due to their highly tunable electronic properties. While alloying and intercalation have been shown to modulate ground states, the role of d-shell filling in governing these transitions remains insufficiently understood. Here, we investigate electron doping effects in MPS3 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT+U). Lithium and cesium deposition are

Alkali-Metal Interlocking of 2D V4O10 Sheets Defines Discretized Interlayer Shear Relationships.

Low-dimensional materials manifest structural anisotropy, quantum confinement, and tightly bound excitonic states, which make them attractive building blocks that can be assembled within three-dimensional laterally stitched heterostructures, stacked van der Waals solids, and complex moiré superlattices. Ion intercalation in the galleries between layered materials provides a means of modifying interlayer separation and coupling, but it is also known to drive the shearing of the layers. In this article, we explore the distinct ligand coordination environments afforded by vanadyl oxygens of singu

NOx Reconstruction Triggered by Zeolite Reverses Alkali Metal Poisoning in NO Selective Catalytic Reduction.

Alkali metal poisoning represents a formidable challenge for the effective utilization of ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) technology. Herein, we propose a versatile strategy to radically circumvent the deactivation effect from alkali metals via regulated activation of surface NOx species. Activity test showed that after physical mixing with a series of zeolites (ZSM-5, MOR, and SAPO-34), the activity of the K-poisoned CeO2-MnOx catalyst achieved complete recovery, and the observed NO conversion was found to be even superior to that of the fresh catalyst. Mechanism analysis from

Single Alkali Metal Ion-Activated Porous Carbon With Heteroatom Doping for Supercapacitor Electrode.

A single alkali metal ion activation method was used to prepare sulfur-doped microporous carbons. A series of alkali metal ions such as Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+ was used in the polymerization process of 3-hydroxythiophenol and formaldehyde to obtain metal ion anchored in the sulfur-containing resin, which was further treated to obtain xerogel and carbonized to obtain microporous carbon with sulfur doping. In this case, the monodispersed alkali metal ions could realize highly effective activation with low activating agent dosage. Intensive material characterizations show that the alkali metal ions

Impact of Alkali Metals on CeO2-WO3/TiO2 Catalysts for NH3-Selective Catalytic Reduction and Lifetime Prediction of Catalysts.

Ce-based catalysts have been widely used in the removal of nitrogen oxides from industrial flue gas because of their good catalytic performance and environmental friendliness. However, the mechanism of alkali metal poisoning in Ce-based catalysts remains to be further studied. This work involves the preparation of the K/Na-poisoned CeWTi catalyst via the impregnation method for assessing its performance in NO removal. Experiments show that both K and Na exhibit detrimental effects on the CeWTi catalyst, and the loading of alkali metal reduces the specific surface area and pore volume of the ca

Dissociation and removal of alkali and alkaline earth metals from sewage sludge flocs during separate and assisted thermal hydrolysis.

High levels of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEM, including K, Na, Ca, and Mg) in sludge needs to be removed in pretreatment process for alleviating adverse effects on subsequent disposal. Theoretically, the liquid environment provided by the pretreatment technology of thermal hydrolysis (TH) is the ideal condition for the dissolution of AAEM. Therefore, this work quantified AAEM removal efficiency of TH and carbonaceous skeleton (CSkel) assisted TH that we previously proposed for sludge dewatering. Then the mechanism of AAEM dissociating from sludge was explored through the new perspecti
