A study was undertaken to determine whether the production of penicillin-binding protein-2' (PBP-2') and the production of beta-lactamase were related to the minimum inhibitory concentrations of methicillin (DMPPC) in various strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The amount of PBP-2' produced by the low-level resistant strain L20A was small and the strain became resistant to DMPPC as a result of inactivation of DMPPC by beta-lactamase. The largest amount of PBP-2' produced was in a moderately resistant strain L21A but the MIC was not high since the strain was not capable of p

IMPORTANCE: Although classically thought to be primarily a nosocomial infection, the incidence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is rising. In this series we report 3 cases of community-acquired MRSA acute dacryoadenitis in adults presenting within a 3-week period.
OBSERVATIONS: All cases presented with pain and periocular erythema increasing over approximately 1 week. An S-shaped lid deformity was evident, and 2 of the 3 cases demonstrated multiple pustules/abscesses in the region of the lacrimal gland that were expressing purulent fluid into the superi

BACKGROUND/AIM: In many hospitals in the world and in our country, the spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is so wide that nowdays vancomycin is recommended for empiric treatment of staphylococcal life threatening infections (sepsis, pneumonia) instead of beta-lactam antibiotics. The aim of this study was to determine the production of beta-lactamases in hospital and community isolates of staphyloococus aureus, i.e. hospital associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) and community associated MRSA (CA-MRSA), the presence of homogeneous and heterogeneous type of methicillin resistance, a

Blepharoconjunctivitis caused by methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis occurred in two hospitalized patients, a 74-year-old man and a 19-year-old man. Both strains were resistant to multiple courses of topical antibiotic therapy. Successful treatment in both cases depended upon antibiotic sensitivity testing. These methicillin-resistant strains of S. epidermidis, like methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, demonstrated almost complete cross-resistance to cephalosporins despite apparent sensitivity on Kirby-Bauer disk sensitivity testing. Topical vancomyci

Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus (S.) aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) are colonizers of skin and mucosa. In humans, MSSA and MRSA compete for colonization space in the anterior nares of pig farmers; however, it was also shown that MSSA/MRSA co-colonization is common and one clone can be found rather than differing types of MSSA and MRSA. We investigated the colonization and clonality of both, MSSA and MRSA in pigs over a longer time. Eighteen sows were nasally sampled three times every ten weeks. Additionally, environmental samples were taken. Samples were invest

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is a gram positive bacterium that causes a number of diseases such as abscesses, infective endocarditis, septic arthritis, etc. It is acquiring resistance against many antibiotics like methicillin; therefore its control is becoming increasingly difficult. Peripheral blood phagocytes particularly polymorphonuclear leucocytes play an important role in the protective mechanisms against these organisms. Phagocytes interact with bacteria and phagocytose these microorganisms to kill them.
METHODS: Phenotypically different isolates of Staphylococcus aureus including

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), known as a nosocomial pathogen, has been isolated from community-acquired infections since the 1980s. It has been reported that there are carriers of MRSA in the community although the rate of carriers is low and the most important risk factor of community-acquired carriage is hospitalization or referral to healthcare facilities. We attempted to investigate methicillin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus colonization, respectively, in nasal and axillary swabs obtained from 500 patients without a history of hospitalization who were

To better understand the epidemiology of bacterial pathogens with particular public health importance in Taiwan, we determined the prevalence of nasal colonization with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in a cohort of HIV-infected patients attending two hospital outpatient departments. All HIV-infected patients followed regularly between May and September 1999 were enrolled and cultures of the anterior nares were performed using a dry sponge swab. All confirmed S. aureus isolates underwent antimicrobial susceptibility testing using

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) relies on activation of a photosensitizer by light in the presence of oxygen, leading to reactive oxygen species formation. Here, a phenalenone derivative series was examined to find green-light-responsive compounds for photodynamic inactivation of methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA and MRSA).
METHODS: Twelve phenalenone derivatives were first compared for visible absorption, photostability, macroscopic appearance in the assay medium, and relative singlet-oxygen generation using ABDA b

Methicillin-susceptible staphylococcus aureus bacteremia is frequent and constantly increasing in Switzerland. It is associated with a high morbidity/mortality, despite antibiotic treatments. Through two clinical cases we discuss the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation and treatment of this "disease", for which the history and clinical examination remain central in order to guarantee an optimal management.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an increasingly common multidrug-resistant clinical pathogen responsible for increasing health costs and for patient morbidity and mortality. Presented in this review, the definition, cell and molecular biology, epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of MRSA infections, including skin and soft tissue infections, bacteremia and endocarditis, pneumonia, bone and joint infections, and central nervous system infections, are addressed. In the treatment of MRSA, this article highlights several common antibiotics that retain activity a

Infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have become more prevalent, in part because of the emergence and spread of community-acquired MRSA. This trend is particularly concerning because of the significant rates of morbidity and mortality associated with MRSA infections, and because MRSA strains are often resistant to many classes of antibiotics. Reports of infections of the head and neck, including wound infections, cellulitis, sinusitis, otitis media, and otitis externa, are well documented. However, to our knowledge, there have been no reports of bacterial laryng

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is epidemic in the community, differs from nosocomial MRSA in virulence, mechanisms, and antibiotic susceptibility, and exhibits diverse and often unique pathologic characteristics. The community-acquired MRSA USA 300 strains are transmitted largely by person-to-person contact and cause characteristic soft-tissue abscesses and, less commonly, other sometimes unusual and serious infections including a necrotizing pneumonia, and other necrotic infections such as necrotizing fasciitis, pelvic thrombophlebitis, and sep

Prostatitis is a common condition that is associated with a poor quality of life. A recent National Institutes of Health Consensus Panel classified prostatitis into the categories of acute bacterial, chronic bacterial, chronic nonbacterial, and asymptomatic. Bacterial prostatitis is usually caused by Escherichia coli and other gram-negative bacteria, but it is not frequently caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections are increasing. Moreover, 2 cases of methicillin-resistant S. aureus prostatic abscesses have been reported. We describe what w

Bacteriol. 87:887-899. 1964.-Cultures of naturally occurring methicillin-resistant staphylococci obtained from a number of hospitals were examined for the nature and degree of resistance to methicillin and other antibiotics. All the cultures tested were similar in that they consisted of mixed populations in which the majority of cells were of normal sensitivity to methicillin with a minority showing methicillin resistance. Activity of dalbavancin against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) in biofilm was investigated and the microbicidal biofilm concentrations (MBC) were determined. Biofilms obtained from ten MRSA and ten MRSE bloodstream isolates, collected from patients in the General Hospital of Vienna between 2012 and 2015, were incubated with dalbavancin in trypticase soy broth (TSB) in serial dilution from 0.0625 mg/l to 256 mg/l using a microtiter plate biofilm model. The plates were incubated for 24 h at 37 ° C and 50% humidity. B

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing concern about methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in the community. This study aimed to evaluate the rate of S aureus nasopharyngeal colonization in outpatients as the primary endpoint, and also to study the impact of several possible risk factors, including recent hospitalization, recent surgical procedures, and antibiotic intake.
METHODS: A total of 1,526 consecutive outpatients underwent surveillance cultures after completing a questionnaire. Isolated S aureus strains were tested for antibiotic susceptibility. The Pearson χ(2) te
