Evaluation of juvenile hormone analogues as rodent feed-through insecticides for control of immature phlebotomine sandflies.

The juvenile hormone analogues methoprene and pyriproxyfen were evaluated as rodent feed-through insecticides for control of immature stages of the sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli (Diptera: Psychodidae). The development and survival of P. papatasi second-instar larvae fed faeces from Syrian hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus, that had been fed a diet containing methoprene (0, 9.788, 97.88 or 978.8 p.p.m.) or pyriproxyfen (0, 9.82, 98.2 or 982 p.p.m.) were evaluated. The faeces of methoprene-treated hamsters greatly reduced the percentage of larvae that pupated at all concentrations tested and

A Disconnect Between Operational Evaluations of Larvicide Treatments to Storm Sewer Catch Basins and Findings of Larvicide Resistance in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, IL, USA.

Regular evaluations of larvicide resistance and operational control effectiveness are two basic components of the Integrated Mosquito Management approach. It is therefore important for mosquito control programs to assess both the efficacy and the effectiveness of larvicide treatments. Recent observations in 2023 and 2024 within areas served by the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District (NWMAD) indicated that methoprene resistance categorized as high and extreme exist in populations of Culex pipiens (L). Despite more than 20 years of exclusive use of Altosid® XR (2.1% methoprene) larvicide in NW

Juvenile hormone signaling during oogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster.

Juvenile hormone (JH) participates both in the control of insect development and the establishment of reproductive maturity. In cultured Drosophila cells and in ovarian nurse cells, JH and its synthetic analog, methoprene, induce the expression of two related genes. These genes encode highly similar amino acid transport proteins that are homologous to transporters found in a variety of eukaryotes. JhI-21 is a novel Drosophila gene, and minidiscs (mnd) is a gene that was identified earlier. Two JH-inducible genes are regulated by different molecular mechanisms; JhI-21 behaves as a secondary JH-

A review of the potential impacts of coastal mosquito control programs on Australian Stingless Bees (Apidae, Meliponini)-likely exposure pathways and lessons learned from studies on honey bees.

The impact of the programmatic use of larvicides for mosquito control on native stingless bees (e.g., Apidae, Meliponini) is a growing concern in Australia due to heightened conservation awareness and the growth of hobbyist stingless bee keeping. In Australia, the two most widely used mosquito larvicides are the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) and the insect hormone mimic methoprene (as S-methoprene). Each has a unique mode of action that could present a risk to stingless bees and other pollinators. Herein, we review the potential impacts of these larvicides on native A

Involvement of Follicular Patency in the Ovarian Developmental Block in Virus-infected, MdSGHV, House Flies, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

The Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) is known to have marked effects on the female Musca domestica L. (or common house fly) reproductive system, particularly regarding the size and functionality of the ovaries. Examination of the terminal ovarian follicles can help determine if and how MdSGHV mechanistically causes the block in ovarian development. In this study, terminal ovarian follicle lengths were measured and monitored for patency using Trypan blue dye staining. We examined the effect of MdSGHV infection on female house fly ovarian follicles and attempted to rescu

Larvicide-mediated oviposition and ovicidal activity among treehole and container-inhabiting mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) species.

Larval application of insecticides (larviciding) is primarily conducted using a variety of biorational compounds as an essential function within integrated mosquito management. Larvicide-treated water has been sporadically investigated for deterring oviposition, but prior efforts have been primarily focused on Aedes aegypti (L.) with limited representation by other peridomestic or treehole species. A series of laboratory assays were conducted using 20 lb/acre (22.4 kg/ha) treatments of Lysinibacillus sphaericus (VectoLex FG), spinosad (Natular G30), and methoprene (Altosid XR-G Ultra) and comp

Critical period for pupal commitment in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Changes in ecdysteroid levels that lead to commitment of pupal and adult development were studied in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Application of juvenile hormone at the time of pupal commitment usually results in delay or blockage of pupal and adult development. With methoprene, a juvenile hormone mimic, the JH sensitive period was found to be within 19 h after ecdysis to the fourth instar, at which time methoprene treatment caused a delay in pupation. Consistent with this observation, there was a small peak of ecdysteroid levels between 14 and 28 h after ecdysis to the fourth ins

Residual efficacy of selected larvicides against Culex pipiens pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) under laboratory and semi-field conditions.

Mosquitoes are a threat worldwide since they are vectors of important pathogens and parasites such as malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile. The residual toxicity of several commercial mosquito larvicides was evaluated for the control of Culex pipiens pipiens under controlled laboratory and semi-field conditions during late spring and summer of 2013. The evaluation included six different active ingredient formulations, i.e., diflubenzuron Du-Dim), Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) (Vectobac), spinosad (Mozkill), S-methoprene (Biopren), temephos (Abate), and polydimethylsilox

Juvenile hormone regulates reproductive diapause through both canonical and noncanonical pathways in the bean bug Riptortus pedestris.

Diapause is an adaptive developmental arrest commonly utilized by animals to cope with seasonal changes. Central to this process are hormonal events that bridge photoperiodic cues and physiological changes. In insect reproductive diapause, the absence of juvenile hormone (JH) serves as the primary endocrine event that governs key diapause traits, including ovarian developmental arrest and lipid accumulation. Conventionally, it is believed that the effects of JH are conveyed through the receptor Methoprene-tolerant (Met) and its transcriptional factor Krüppel homolog 1 (Kr-h1). However, our stu

Adherence to veterinary recommendations for ectoparasiticides purchased by cat owners in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Safe and effective flea and tick treatment options for cats are important in companion animal practice because of feline ectoparasite infestation prevalence and the potential for parasitic disease transmission. Retrospective cat owner purchasing transactions at United States of America (USA) veterinary clinics were obtained for three topical feline flea and tick ectoparasiticides. One medication, fluralaner, had a 12-week redosing interval, while two other medications (fipronil/s-methoprene/pyriproxyfen; imidacloprid/pyriproxyfen) were approved for monthly redosing. COMPARATIVE LABORATORY ACTIVITY AND SEMI-FIELD EFFICACY OF OMNIPRENE® G AND ALTOSID® PELLETS AGAINST AEDES AEGYPTI.

Mosquito larval control by biorational larvicides plays a crucial role in mosquito and mosquito-borne disease management. However, the availability of larvicides that meet the criteria of efficacy, safety, and quality is limited and conventional pesticides are no longer preferred for larval control. Although efforts are made to research new active ingredients (AIs), it is equally important to innovate new formulations based on currently available AIs such as microbial agents and insect growth regulators. Studies were therefore conducted to compare the laboratory activity and semi-field efficac

The ecdysis triggering hormone system is essential for reproductive success in Mythimna separata (Walker).

Ecdysis triggering hormone (ETH) was originally discovered as a key hormone that regulates insect moulting via binding to its receptor, ETH receptor (ETHR). However, the precise role of ETH in moth reproduction remains to be explored in detail. ETH function was verified in vivo using Mythimna separata (Walker), an important cereal crop pest. RT-qPCR analysis revealed that transcriptional expression profiles of MsepETH showed evident sexual dimorphism in the adult stage. MsepETH expression increased in the females on day 3 and persisted thereafter till day 7, consistent with female ovarian matu
