Comparison of eye protection with methylcellulose an paraffin ointments during general anaesthesia.

A total of 120 patients who were all anaesthetized for more than 90 minutes were given eye protection with paraffin-based oculentum simplex, Ph. Nord. 63, in one eye, and water-based four per cent methylcellulose in the other. Anaesthesia was conducted with halothane, or thiopentone an meperidine, or by a neurolept technique. Peri-ocular oedema and reaction in the conjunctiva resembling conjunctivitis was less pronounced after methylcellulose. When both paraffin-based ointment and halothane anaesthesia were used, there were signs of drug interaction, as the patients' conjunctivae were now dist

Intraocular pressure after phacoemulsification using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and sodium hyaluronate as viscoelastics.

BACKGROUND: Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation has resulted in early visual rehabilitation, increased wound stability and improved refractive results. Viscoelastic substances (VES) are important adjuncts in this type of surgery. Use of VES in phacoemulsification can be associated with adverse effects, the most common and potentially dangerous of which is the transient rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) in post-operative period. To evaluate the effects of viscoelastic substances on post-operative IOP after phacoemulsification with implantation of intraocular lens, a cro

Methylcellulose as a non-bonding gelling agent for calcium chloride methanol fuel gels.

Carbohydrate-based fuel gels find diverse applications across industries ranging from renewable energy and transportation to military and emergency preparedness. This study investigates the thermal properties, gel characteristics, combustion performance, micro-, and nano-scale structure of methylcellulose (MC) in methanol and the effect of calcium chloride (CaCl2) addition. The results show that MC exhibits viscoelastic phase separation due to the lower critical solution temperature, resulting in gelation at the 22 wt%. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals good thermal stability of MC in methano

2% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as a viscous surgical adjunct. A multicenter prospective randomized trial.

A multicenter prospective trial was conducted comparing preoperative and postoperative endothelial cell counts in patients who had extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation or phacoemulsification and posterior chamber lens implantation. One hundred sixty six eyes received 2% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (Occucoat) and 56 eyes received sodium hyaluronate (Healon). The average cell loss in the Occucoat group was 12.1%; in the Healon group it was 10% (P = NS). There was no significant difference between the two groups in intraocular pressure at 24 hours. Whipple's disease demonstrated by double contrast small bowel enema with barium and methylcellulose.

The radiologic findings on small bowel enema examination using barium and methylcellulose (SBE + Ba + MC) in a patient with Whipple's disease before and after treatment are described. The changes on SBE + Ba + MC corresponded well to the clinical and morphologic picture. The advantages of this double contrast technique compared to the enteroclysis with barium alone are demonstrated. The SBE + Ba + MC is a good method to demonstrate the manifestations of Whipple's disease involving the small bowel and the mesentery.

Comparison of different filler types as bioactive agents in Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose /Agarose composite.

New materials play a crucial role in bone regeneration by providing biocompatible scaffolds that support cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. In the present work, we investigate the effect of three different fillers, seashell powder (SSP), nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA), and borate bioactive glass (BG), on the biophysical properties of Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)/Agarose (AG) polymeric matrix for bone tissue regeneration. The study identifies seashell powder's distinct fingerprint as a high-bioavailabe, sustainable substitute for bone regeneration in comparison wit

Probing the moisture-induced drug recrystallization in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-based amorphous solid dispersions.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), a widely used cellulose derivative, plays a central role in stabilizing drug-containing amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs), by inhibiting the drug recrystallization. However, the moisture sorption behavior of HPMC can compromise the physical stability of ASDs under humid conditions. This study examines how humidity, drug loading, storage time, and spatial location within the ASD together influence the recrystallization behavior of a model drug (naproxen) in HPMC-based ASDs prepared via hot melt extrusion. We hypothesized that moisture induced drug recrysta

Enhanced Osteoinduction, Rheological and Mechanical Performance of 3D-Printed Methylcellulose-Gelatin-Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds.

Complex patient-specific bone defects remain difficult to reconstruct because the regenerative capacity of bone is limited and prefabricated implants cannot readily match defect geometry. In this work, methylcellulose-gelatin-hydroxyapatite (MC/GEL/HA) inks were formulated with varying methylcellulose content and hydroxyapatite incorporation, crosslinked with EDC/NHS, and 3D-printed into porous scaffolds with defined square-pore architectures. Inks were evaluated by oscillatory and steady-shear rheology, and printed scaffolds were characterized for morphology, chemical composition, mechanical

Fabrication of Gastro-Floating Famotidine Tablets: Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose-Based Semisolid Extrusion 3D Printing.

Semisolid extrusion (SSE) three-dimensional (3D) printing uses drug-loaded paste for the printing process, which is capable of constructing intricate 3D structures. This research presents a unique method for fabricating gastro-floating tablets (GFT) using SSE. Paste-loaded famotidine with a matrix made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) were prepared. Nine 3D printed tablets were developed with different HPMC concentrations and infill percentages and evaluated to determine their physicochemical properties, content uniformity, dissolution, and floating duration. The crystallinity of the dr

Influence of beta-cyclodextrin complexation on carbamazepine release from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose matrix tablets.

The in vitro release profiles of carbamazepine and beta-cyclodextrin either complexed or simply mixed and subsequently incorporated in hydrophilic matrix tablets containing 15 or 30% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose were evaluated. Solubility studies revealed a linear relationship between the increase in carbamazepine solubility and the increase in beta-cyclodextrin concentration. Drying methods (spray-drying and freeze-drying) were used to obtain carbamazepine/beta-cyclodextrin solid complexes in order to prepare tablets. The results demonstrated that matrix tablets containing carbamazepine/beta

Skin sensitization and photosensitization studies of hydrophobically modified hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in guinea pigs.

Skin sensitization and photosensitization tests of hydrophobically modified hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HM-HPMC), a new cellulose derivative used as a thickener for topical pharmaceuticals, were conducted using guinea pigs. An aqueous dispersion of HM-HPMC (3 w/v %) was applied in the tests. Skin reaction was not observed in any animal in the HM-HPMC-treated group or control group. In the photosensitization test, no skin reaction was found in any animal in the test-preparation group or the control group. It was concluded that HM-HPMC dispersion does not exhibit skin sensitizing or photosens

Methylcellulose Hydrogel with Melissa officinalis Essential Oil as a Potential Treatment for Oral Candidiasis.

Candida spp. are the most prevalent fungi of the human microbiota and are opportunistic pathogens that can cause oral candidiasis. Management of such infections is limited due to the low number of antifungal drugs available, their relatively high toxicity and the emergence of antifungal resistance. Therefore, much interest in the antimicrobial potential of natural compounds has recently been evident. The use of hydrogels in the delivery of biocides has been explored due to their biocompatibility, ease with drug encapsulation, and due to their potential to confer mechanical and structural prope

Gamma scintigraphic evaluation of the fate of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsules in the human gastrointestinal tract.

The fate (movement and disintegration) of hard novel hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) two-piece capsules in the human gastrointestinal tract was investigated using a gamma scintigraphic imaging method. Two different prolonged-release formulations without an active ingredient were used. The capsules contained different viscosity grades of HPMC powder (HPMC K100 and HPMC K4M). The aim was to determine the main reason why the pharmacokinetic profiles of model drugs change when the diluent was changed to a higher viscosity grade. The results were compared with our previous pharmacokinetic stud

Effect of salt-induced structural changes in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose gels on 5-fluorouracil release.

Localized chemotherapy represents a promising strategy for enhancing tumor-targeted drug delivery while minimizing systemic toxicity. In this study, we investigated thermosensitive hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-based hydrogels for the prolonged localized delivery of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The sol-gel transition temperature of the formulations was modulated within the physiological range (32-37) using Hofmeister salts. Rheological analysis revealed that 5-FU alone decreased the gelation temperature of HPMC from 47 ± 0.8 °C to 44 ± 0.7 °C due to the competitive disruption of polymer hydra
