Thirty-six adult mongrel dogs underwent either a posterior C4-C5 bone graft or methylmethacrylate-cerclage wire construction procedure to simulate the analogous human stabilization procedures. When we compared the effect of a hydrogel intraocular lens on the corneal endothelium of rabbits to the damage produced by uncoated methylmethacrylate intraocular lenses and methylmethacrylate lenses coated with sodium hyaluronate or methylcellulose, we found that the endothelial damage produced by the hydrogel lenses in a standard 0.25 mm2 of contact was 3.6%. Fifty-two methylmethacrylate cranioplasties were performed on forty-seven patients over a five year period. Two cranioplasties became infected and required removal. Methylmethacrylate, an acrylic plastic used in dentistry, has recently been adapted as a cement in bone surgery. It has proved to be useful in implant surgery and total joint replacement, in malignant neoplastic fractures, and in the fixation of pins and screws in bone. However, problems such as recurring infections, thermal necrosis of tissue, depression of myocardial and hepatic function, and leakage of monomer may occur with the use of methylmethacrylate.

A case report is presented of a patient with a known malignant pheochromocytoma, who was to undergo an orthopaedic procedure using methylmethacrylate bone cement. Preoperative preparation of the patient included the use of prazosin and metyrosine. Epidural blockade was chosen as the anaesthetic technique for intraoperative management. Surgical fixation with methylmethacrylate did not produce profound or prolonged hypotension despite sudden massive blood loss prior to its use. Epidural morphine was administered for postoperative pain control.

Surgical stabilization of the scoliotic spine in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is technically difficult owing to the mechanical weakness of the bone. Brittle bone makes instrumentation of the spine a procedure all too often associated with complications. Combining the instrumentation of the OI spine, both anteriorly and posteriorly, with the use of methylmethacrylate to augment the fixation may prove valuable as a surgical technique. This usage of methylmethacrylate in correcting severe scoliosis in OI has not been previously reported.

Four patients with gross hematuria and dysuria following intrusion of methylmethacrylate into the pelvic cavity after total hip replacement are described. We report a case of a 65-year-old man with intradipolic epidermoid cyst of the frontal bone. The patient presented with headache and swelling of the forehead. The treatment of 31 actual or pending pathologic fractures of the long bones with open reduction and internal fixation with methylmethacrylate in 25 patients with intraosseous metastatic breast cancer is reported. Stromal ulceration of the alkali-burned rabbit cornea was found to be associated invariably with phagocytically active polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative importance of subchondral nutrition in cartilage in autologous transplants and its relation to the development of osteoarthritis (OA).
METHOD: The study was performed in non-human primates with two types of autografts placed orthotopically. A centrally located bone bar of the lower tibia was removed after epiphyseolysis with an Ilizarov device. The bone bridge attached to the metaphysis was easy to remove, and methylmethacrylate was used as an interpositional material. Varus deformity was corrected at the level of the epiphyseolysis. At the 2-year follow-up, there was evidence of further growth and correction of the varus was maintained.
