Beam shaping and high-speed, cylinder-lens-free beam guiding using acousto-optical deflectors without additional compensation optics.

Using acousto-optical deflectors at high deflection speeds via acoustical frequency chirping induces astigmatism, deforming the laser beam in an unfavorable way. Within the paper, we present a method to prevent this effect for an ultrashort pulsed laser beam via acoustical frequency jumps synchronized to the pulse-to-pulse pause. We also demonstrate and give a method to calculate beam shaping capability of acousto-optical deflectors via arbitrary spatial frequency developments during ultrashort laser pulse transit through the deflector. Cylinder-lens-free deflection at >2000 rad/s and beam sha

Periodically Poled Piezoelectric Lithium Niobate Resonator for Piezoelectric Power Conversion.

As demand for compact and efficient power conversion systems increases, piezoelectric power converters have attracted attention for their ability to replace bulky magnetic inductors with acoustic resonators, thereby enabling higher power density and improved efficiency. Achieving optimal converter performance requires resonators with a high quality factor (Q), strong electromechanical coupling ( $\textit {k}^{{2}}$ ), high-power handling capability, and a spurious-free response. Lithium niobate (LN) has emerged as a promising material in this context due to its high figure of merit (FoM $= \te

Alcohol vapours sensor based on thin polyaniline salt film and quartz crystal microbalance.

A sensor based on the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique was developed for detection of a number of primary aliphatic alcohols such as ethanol, methanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol vapours. Detection was based on a sensitive and a thin film of polyaniline, emeraldine salt (ES), coated the QCM electrode. The frequency shifts (Delta f) of the QCM were increased due to the vapour absorption into the ES film. The values of Delta f were found to be linearly correlated with the concentrations of alcohols vapour in mg L(-1). The changes in frequency are due to the hydrophilic character of th

NiO/ZnO Nanocomposites for Multimodal Intelligent MEMS Gas Sensors.

Gas sensor arrays designed for pattern recognition face persistent challenges in achieving high sensitivity and selectivity for multiple volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly under varying environmental conditions. To address these limitations, we developed multimodal intelligent MEMS gas sensors by precisely tailoring the nanocomposite ratio of NiO and ZnO components. These sensors demonstrate enhanced responses to ethylene glycol (EG) and limonene (LM) at different operating temperatures, demonstrating material-specific selectivity. Additionally, a multitask deep learning model is

In vivo 3D human vocal fold imaging with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography and a MEMS scanning catheter.

We present in-vivo 3D human vocal fold images with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT). Characterizing the extent and location of vocal fold lesions provides useful information in guiding surgeons during phonomicrosurgery. Previous studies showed that PS-OCT imaging can distinguish vocal fold lesions from normal tissue, but these studies were limited to 2D cross-sectional imaging and were susceptible to sampling error. In-vivo 3D endoscopic imaging was performed by using a recently developed 2-axis MEMS scanning catheter and a spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT), running at 1

Adaptive data filtering of inertial sensors with variable bandwidth.

MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system)-based inertial sensors, i.e., accelerometers and angular rate sensors, are commonly used as a cost-effective solution for the purposes of navigation in a broad spectrum of terrestrial and aerospace applications. These tri-axial inertial sensors form an inertial measurement unit (IMU), which is a core unit of navigation systems. Even if MEMS sensors have an advantage in their size, cost, weight and power consumption, they suffer from bias instability, noisy output and insufficient resolution. Furthermore, the sensor's behavior can be significantly affected

Developing an Acoustic Sensing Yarn for Health Surveillance in a Military Setting.

Overexposure to high levels of noise can cause permanent hearing disorders, which have a significant adverse effect on the quality of life of those affected. Injury due to noise can affect people in a variety of careers including construction workers, factory workers, and members of the armed forces. By monitoring the noise exposure of workers, overexposure can be avoided and suitable protective equipment can be provided. This work focused on the creation of a noise dosimeter suitable for use by members of the armed forces, where a discrete dosimeter was integrated into a textile helmet cover.

Grasper having tactile sensing function using acoustic reflection for laparoscopic surgery.

PURPOSE: In current minimally invasive surgery techniques, the tactile information available to the surgeon is limited. Improving tactile sensation could enhance the operability of surgical instruments. Considering surgical applications, requirements such as having electrical safety, a simple structure, and sterilization capability should be considered. The current study sought to develop a grasper that can measure grasping force at the tip, based on a previously proposed tactile sensing method using acoustic reflection. This method can satisfy the requirements for surgical applications becaus

Mercury Sorption and Desorption on Gold: A Comparative Analysis of Surface Acoustic Wave and Quartz Crystal Microbalance-Based Sensors.

Microelectromechanical sensors based on surface acoustic wave (SAW) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) transducers possess substantial potential as online elemental mercury (Hg(0)) vapor detectors in industrial stack effluents. In this study, a comparison of SAW- and QCM-based sensors is performed for the detection of low concentrations of Hg(0) vapor (ranging from 24 to 365 ppbv). Experimental measurements and finite element method (FEM) simulations allow the comparison of these sensors with regard to their sensitivity, sorption and desorption characteristics, and response time following H

High sensitivity trace gas detection by cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy using a mid-infrared continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator.

Highly sensitive cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic detection of hydrogen cyanide and methane in the mid-infrared region is demonstrated. A mid-infrared continuous-wave frequency tunable optical parametric oscillator was used as a light source in the experimental setup. Noise equivalent detection limits of 190 ppt (1 s) and 65 ppt (30 s) were achieved for HCN and CH(4), respectively. The normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient is 1.8 × 10(-9) W cm(-1) Hz(-1/2).

Feasibility study of MEMS-based stenosis detection using a prototypical catheter design with intravascular scanning probes (IVSPs).

X-ray coronary angiography (XRA) is a standard clinical method for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD). However, despite continuous improvements in XRA technology, it has limitations that include being visible only in color contrast, and the information it provides on coronary artery plaques is not comprehensive due to its low signal-to-noise ratio and limited resolution. In this study, we propose a novel diagnostic tool, a MEMS-based smart catheter with an intravascular scanning probe (IVSP), to complement XRA and verify its effectiveness and feasibility. The IVSP catheter uses Pt strain

Dynamic performance of microelectromechanical systems deformable mirrors for use in an active/adaptive two-photon microscope.

Active optics such as deformable mirrors can be used to control both focal depth and aberrations during scanning laser microscopy. If the focal depth can be changed dynamically during scanning, then imaging of oblique surfaces becomes possible. If aberrations can be corrected dynamically during scanning, an image can be optimized throughout the field of view. Here, we characterize the speed and dynamic precision of a Boston Micromachines Corporation Multi-DM 140 element aberration correction mirror and a Revibro Optics 4-zone focus control mirror to assess suitability for use in an active and

Crocodile-inspired dome-shaped pressure receptors for passive hydrodynamic sensing.

Passive mechanosensing is an energy-efficient and effective recourse for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for perceiving their surroundings. The passive sensory organs of aquatic animals have provided inspiration to biomimetic researchers for developing underwater passive sensing systems for AUVs. This work is inspired by the 'integumentary sensory organs' (ISOs) which are dispersed on the skin of crocodiles and are equipped with slowly adapting (SA) and rapidly adapting (RA) receptors. ISOs assist crocodiles in locating the origin of a disturbance, both on the water surface and under wat

Biomimetic Accommodating Intraocular Lens Using a Valved Deformable Liquid Balloon.

OBJECTIVE: Presbyopia is a common age-related condition that prevents people from focusing on near objects. The etiology of presbyopia continues to be debated, but the end effect of all postulated mechanisms is the lack of deformation of the human lens. Using our understanding of the biomechanical properties of the natural human lens, we created a unique accommodating intraocular lens. Although this lens can be used for lenticular disease such as myopia and hyperoperopia, this study addresses the needs of cataract patients with presbyopia. METHODS: The lens was implanted into presbyopic human

A MEMS accelerometer-based real-time motion-sensing module for urological diagnosis and treatment.

This paper reports a real-time motion-sensing module, which is realized by incorporating multiple MEMS accelerometers into a standard Foley catheter, for assisting diagnosis and treatment of stressed urinary incontinence. The accelerometers measure the orientations of the catheter at multiple points, so the shape of the urethra and movement of the bladder neck can be tracked in real time. An algorithm for extracting tilting, position and shape information from 3-axis MEMS accelerometers has been developed. The model of measurement errors for both static and dynamic testing is also established.

A piezoelectric immunosensor for Leishmania chagasi antibodies in canine serum.

The American visceral leishmaniasis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in Brazil for both humans and dogs. Attempts to make a diagnosis of this disease need to be improved, especially in endemic areas, and in the tracking and screening of asymptomatic dogs, which are their main host in urban areas. A quartz crystal microbalance immunosensor for the diagnosis of the canine visceral leishmaniasis using a recombinant antigen of Leishmania chagasi (rLci2B-NH6) was developed. The rLci2B-NH6 was tightly immobilized on a quartz crystal gold electrode by self-assembled monolayer based on

MEMS-Based Sensor for Simultaneous Measurement of Pulse Wave and Respiration Rate.

The continuous measurements of vital signs (body temperature, blood pressure, pulse wave, and respiration rate) are important in many applications across various fields, including healthcare and sports. To realize such measurements, wearable devices that cause minimal discomfort to the wearers are highly desired. Accordingly, a device that can measure multiple vital signs simultaneously using a single sensing element is important in order to reduce the number of devices attached to the wearer's body, thereby reducing user discomfort. Thus, in this study, we propose a device with a microelectro

On the design of a MEMS piezoelectric accelerometer coupled to the middle ear as an implantable sensor for hearing devices.

The presence of external elements is a major limitation of current hearing aids and cochlear implants, as they lead to discomfort and inconvenience. Totally implantable hearing devices have been proposed as a solution to mitigate these constraints, which has led to challenges in designing implantable sensors. This work presents a feasibility analysis of a MEMS piezoelectric accelerometer coupled to the ossicular chain as an alternative sensor. The main requirements of the sensor include small size, low internal noise, low power consumption, and large bandwidth. Different designs of MEMS piezoe
