Cross-kingdom synthetic microbial communities outperform single-kingdom consortia in promoting potato growth under continuous cropping.

Continuous cropping obstacles, including soilborne plant pathogen accumulation and soil microbial community degradation, present a critical bottleneck limiting sustainable potato production worldwide. To tackle the prominent obstacles associated with potato continuous cropping, this study explored the potential of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) in regulating soil microbial ecology and promoting potato growth. Three SynComs were constructed, including a single bacterial consortium (SB), a single fungal consortium (SF), and a bacteria-fungal mixed consortium (SBF), using four bacteria

Bio-degraded of sulfamethoxazole by microbial consortia without addition nutrients: Mineralization, nitrogen removal, and proteomic characterization.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is widely employed as an antibiotic, while its residue in environment has become a common public concern. Using 100 mg/L SMX as the sole nutrient source, the acclimated sludge obtained by this study displayed an excellent SMX degradation performance. The addition of SMX resulted in significant microbiological differentiation within the acclimated sludge. Microbacterium (6.6%) was identified as the relatively dominant genera in metabolism group that used SMX as sole carbon source. Highly expressed proteins from this strain strongly suggested its essential role in SMX degr

Bacillus spizizenii DN and microbial consortia biostimulation followed by gamma irradiation for efficient textile wastewater treatment.

Textile wastewater still poses a huge environmental problem due to its high water consumption and high effluent release that is full of toxic chemicals. In the present study, different approaches were studied to layout an operating procedure for textile wastewater treatment in order to obtain treated wastewater that is safe for non-potable uses. Our approach depended on (1) co-substrate to biostimulate indigenous microbial textile wastewater community by adding Tryptone Soy Broth (TSB) and TSB supplemented with 1% glucose, (2) co-culture (bioaugmentation) with Bacillus spizizenii DN cells (pre

Bioleaching of heavy metals and removal of antibiotic resistance genes from sludge by diverse functional microbial consortia.

Sewage sludge often contains heavy metals and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing challenges for its safe disposal. Bioleaching is a promising technique for heavy metal removal, but its impact on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), particularly when mediated by diverse consortia, remains unclear. This study systematically compared the efficiency of different functional microbial consortia, including Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans), Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans), and their combinations with the acid-tolerant yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (R. mucilaginos

Impacts of Nutrients on Alkene Biodegradation Rates and Microbial Community Composition in Enriched Consortia from Natural Inocula.

There is a growing need for biological and chemical methods for upcycling plastic waste streams. Pyrolysis processes can accelerate plastic depolymerization by breaking polyethylene into smaller alkene components which may be more biodegradable than the initial polymer. While the biodegradation of alkanes has been extensively studied, the role microorganisms play in alkene breakdown is not well understood. Alkene biodegradation holds the potential to contribute to the coupling of chemical and biological processing of polyethylene plastics. In addition, nutrient levels are known to impact rates

Amino-functionalized hydrogel immobilized microbial consortia to reduce the dissemination risks of antibiotic resistance genes in soil.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) have posed an environmental threat to soil due to the excessive utilization of antibiotics. Traditional material-biological remediation strategies were limited by the difficulty of colonizing functional bacteria and insufficient removal efficiency of ARB and ARGs. Here, a functionalized carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel with functional microbial consortia (NCMC + mc) remediation strategy was employed to reduce the dissemination risks of ARGs in soil and improve soil health. The NCMC + mc treatment reduced the levels of tar

Development of a high-resolution multiplex qPCR method to profile microbial consortia in spaceflight water recovery systems.

A key component of life support on the International Space Station (ISS) is the Water Recovery System (WRS), which recycles and disinfects urine, other wastewater, and humidity condensate for use as potable water. A resident mixed-species bacterial population has persisted in the WRS, upstream from the disinfection components, despite various microbial control methods. Five bacterial species (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Burkholderia contaminans, Methylobacterium fujisawaense, Ralstonia insidiosa, and Cupriavidus metallidurans) have been regularly isolated from the WRS and have a propensity to form

Metatranscriptomic analysis of colonic mucosal samples exploring the functional role of active microbial consortia in complicated diverticulitis.

In this study, we investigated complicated diverticulitis, an inflammatory condition associated with abscesses, fistulas, intestinal obstructions, perforations, and primarily affects adults over the age of 60. Although the exact etiology remains unclear, the gut microbiome has been suggested as a contributing factor. Previous studies have used 16S rRNA gene analysis from patient fecal samples, which is limited to identifying the bacterial communities present. Herein, we employed shotgun metatranscriptomics on 40 patient-matched samples of diseased and adjacent normal colonic mucosal tissues fr

Investigating the degradation potential of microbial consortia for perfluorooctane sulfonate through a functional "top-down" screening approach.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a prominent perfluorinated compound commonly found in the environment, known to pose various risks to human health. However, the removal of PFOS presents significant challenges, primarily due to the limited discovery of bacteria capable of effectively degrading PFOS. Moreover, single degradation bacteria often encounter obstacles in individual cultivation and the breakdown of complex pollutants. In contrast, microbial consortia have shown promise in pollutant degradation. This study employed a continuous enrichment method, combined with multiple co-metabolic

Lignin Metabolism by Selected Fungi and Microbial Consortia for Plant Stimulation: Implications for Biologically Active Humus Genesis.

Plant lignin is regarded as an important source for soil humic substances (HSs). Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether microbial metabolism on lignin is related to the genesis of unique HS biological activities (e.g., direct plant stimulation). Here, selected white-rot fungi (i.e., Ganoderma lucidum and Irpex lacteus) and plant litter- or mountain soil-derived microbial consortia were exploited to structurally modify lignin, followed by assessing the plant-stimulatory activity of the lignin-derived products. Parts solubilized by microbial metabolism on lignin were proven to exhibit organic m

Enhanced Bioremediation of Aged Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil Using Immobilized Microbial Consortia Combined with Strengthening Remediation Strategies.

Microbial biodegradation is considered as one of the most effective strategies for the remediation of soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). To improve the degradation efficiency of PAHs, PAH-degrading consortia combined with strengthening remediation strategies was used in this study. The PAH biodegrading performance of seven bacterial consortia constructed by different ratios of Mycobacterium gilvum MI, Mycobacterium sp. ZL7 and Rhodococcus rhodochrous Q3 was evaluated in an aqueous system containing phenanthrene, pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[b]fluoranthene. Bact

Microbial response and recovery strategy of the anammox process under ciprofloxacin stress from pure strain and consortia perspectives.

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) poses a high risk of resistance development in water environments. Therefore, comprehensive effects and recovery strategies of CIP in anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process were systematically elucidated from consortia and pure strains perspectives. The anammox consortia was not significantly affected by the stress of 10 mg L-1 CIP, while the higher concentration (20 mg L-1) of CIP caused a dramatic reduction in the nitrogen removal performance of anammox system. Simultaneously, the abundances of dominant functional bacteria and corresponding genes also significantly

Fermentation of plant-based foods: Microbial consortia and their impacts on composition, sensory quality, and health benefits of food products.

Fermented plant-based foods have obtained growing interests for their improved nutrition profile, enhanced flavor and taste, as well as their health-promoting properties. Fermentation using lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts can eliminate antinutritional components and off-flavor compounds present in plant matrices while also generating beneficial metabolites. The interaction between fermentative microbes and plant substrates is dependent on plant matrices, microbial strains, and processing conditions. Accumulating evidence indicates that fermentation modifies the generation, degradation, a

Use of silicate minerals for pH control during reductive dechlorination of chloroethenes in batch cultures of different microbial consortia.

In chloroethene-contaminated sites undergoing in situ bioremediation, groundwater acidification is a frequent problem in the source zone, and buffering strategies have to be implemented to maintain the pH in the neutral range. An alternative to conventional soluble buffers is silicate mineral particles as a long-term source of alkalinity. In previous studies, the buffering potentials of these minerals have been evaluated based on abiotic dissolution tests and geochemical modeling. In the present study, the buffering potentials of four silicate minerals (andradite, diopside, fayalite, and forst

Isolation, Potential Beneficial Properties, and Assessment of Storage Stability of Direct-Fed Microbial Consortia from Wild-Type Chicken Intestine.

Direct-fed microorganisms (DFM) are recognized as an alternative to antibiotic-based growth promoters in poultry production due to their health benefits. DFM, however, should undergo rigorous safety testing to ensure they meet the criteria to be "Generally Recognized as Safe." This study assessed eight bacterial consortia (BC) isolated from the ileal and cecal intestinal regions of wild-type chickens, subjecting them to probiotic tests. Subsequently, they were spray- and freeze-dried to evaluate their storage stability for 30 days. BC5-I and BC7-I, isolated from the ileum, emerged as promising

Polysaccharide hydrogel integrated microbial consortia for reducing relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in soil: physical adsorption and biological regulation.

The occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil ecosystems poses a significant risk to human health. However, the techniques for removing ARGs in soil remain limited. Here we developed a natural polysaccharide hydrogel (low-acyl gellan gum/chitosan, GGC) to immobilize the microbial consortia for mitigating the propagation of ARGs. The introduction of microbial consortia in GGC demonstrated high degradation efficiencies of antibiotics, which attributed to the activation of the metabolic pathway network through microbial consortia, further reducing selective pressure

Tailoring microbial communities for medium chain fatty acid production from waste activated sludge: Comparative performance of endogenous vs. exogenous consortia.

Optimizing medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) production from waste activated sludge (WAS) requires tailoring microbial communities, yet it remains unclear whether combining substrate sterilization with exogenous caproate-synthesizing bacteria (CSB) can enhance chain elongation. Here, we compared the MCFA production achieved using this strategy with that driven by the endogenous microbiomes in both the solid residue and the supernatant. Among all experimental groups, this strategy achieved the highest MCFA production in the supernatants (3935 ± 21 mg COD/L). This strategy increased CSB abundance i

A theoretical systems-biology framework for the degradation of mixed plastics and conversion into fertilizer-grade compounds via engineered microbial consortia.

Plastic pollution is a global environmental challenge of increasing severity. Global plastic production reached approximately 413.8 million metric tonnes in 2023, yet global assessments, including those by Geyer et al., suggest that fewer than 10% of post-consumer plastics are effectively recycled. Here we present a theoretical Plastic-to-Fertilizer (P2F) framework that proposes an engineered four-member microbial consortium capable of partially depolymerizing mixed plastic waste, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene

Constructing simplified microbial consortia that couple lactic acid and ethanol utilization to highly produce caproic acid from liquor-making wastewater.

Converting biodegradable carbon in wastewater into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) through stable microbiota is highly attractive. In this study, we utilized a top-down approach for constructing MCFA-producing microbial consortia. Specifically, an enrichment and plating-screening strategy employing lactic acid and ethanol as selective carbon sources was applied to isolate simplified caproic acid-producing microbial consortia from liquor-making pit mud. The representative microbial consortium SimpCom3 demonstrated high level of caproic acid production (14.62 ± 0.48 g/L) in a semi-synthetic med
