While inorganic forms of tin are of relatively low toxicity towards microorganisms, the more lipid-soluble organotins can be highly toxic. Generally, trisubstituted (R3SnX) organotins are more toxic than di- (R2SnX2) and monosubstituted (RSnX3) compounds; the anion (X) apparently having little influence on toxicity. However, many microorganisms exhibit resistance to organotins, a phenomenon of relevance to the environmental cycling of organotins and also to novel biological methods of treatment. Organotin degradation can involve the sequential removal of organic moieties to yield less toxic de

Bacteria attach to teeth and oral mucosal surfaces in a surprisingly selective manner, and attachment appears to be the first step in the colonization process. Attachment is thought to involve lectin-like and/or hydrophobic ligands, called adhesins, often present in bacterial surface appendages which interact with receptors on oral tissues. A variety of factors can influence bacterial attachment, and therefore have the potential to affect host-parasite interactions in the mouth. Factors discussed include salivary components, dietary lectins, and sublethal concentrations of antibiotics.

Many microbial pathogens co-opt or perturb host membrane trafficking pathways. This review covers recent examples in which microbes interact with host exocytosis, the fusion of intracellular vesicles with the plasma membrane. The bacterial pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus subvert recycling endosomal pathways of exocytosis in order to induce their entry into human cells. By contrast, entry of the protozoan pathogen Trypanosoma cruzi or the virus adenovirus into host cells involves exploitation of lysosomal exocytosis. Toxins produced by Bacillus anthracis or Vibrio cho

It is essential to remediate the polluted urban river, which endangers the aquatic creatures and affected human body's senses. The treatment wetland combined with microbial electrochemical system (MES) used for the remediation is becoming a new research focus due to its ideal pollutants removal efficiency and small footprint. Here this paper provided a kind of novel shallow wetland bed coupling with close-circuit microbial electrochemical system (WB-CMES) to remove pollutants in surface water. In contrast to the shallow wetland bed coupling with open-circuit MES (WB-OMES) and the shallow wetla

Microbial interactions are fundamental to ecology, health, and disease, yet high-throughput tools to study these complex relationships remain scarce. We introduce Polychip, a fully integrated, high-throughput droplet microfluidics platform that revolutionizes microbial interaction screening. By seamlessly combining six microfluidic operations onto a single chip, Polychip achieves 99.7% efficiency and accelerates screening by 11-14 times compared to traditional high-throughput liquid handling robotic methods, with minimal human input. Using the Polychip, we screened 2.24 × 106 soil-extracted mi

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues primarily caused by dysbiotic bacterial communities. Accumulating evidence suggests that periodontal pathogens not only drive the initiation and progression of periodontitis but also significantly contribute to systemic disorders, including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth. The key periodontal pathogens implicated in disease pathogenesis include Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Aggregatibact

Recent research has uncovered new mechanisms that disrupt the balance between the host and microbes in the middle ear, potentially leading to dysbiosis and chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). Dysbiotic microbial communities, including core pathogens such as persister cells, are recognized for displaying cooperative virulence. These microbial communities not only evade the host's immune defenses but also promote inflammation that leads to tissue damage. This leads to uncontrolled disorder and pathogen proliferation, potentially causing hearing loss and systemic complications. In this discu

Biofilms are more than just structural microbial communities. They are dynamic chemical ecosystems that synthesize a range of extracellular compounds involved in functions that extend beyond biofilm architecture. From quorum-sensing molecules like acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) to short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), phenazines, indoles, and reactive sulfur species (RSS), biofilm-derived metabolites can impact the physiology and behavior of microorganisms living in the same ecosystem, including other bacteria and protozoa. It has recently been demonstrated that such molecules may also modulate co

The presence of phosphorus in borosilicate glass (at 0.1 - 1.3 mol% P2O5) and in iron-phosphate glass (at 53 mol% P2O5) stimulated the growth and metabolic activity of anaerobic bacteria in model systems. Dissolution of these phosphorus containing glasses was either inhibited or accelerated by microbial metabolic activity, depending on the solution chemistry and the glass composition. The breakdown of organic carbon to volatile fatty acids increased glass dissolution. The interaction of microbially reduced Fe(II) with phosphorus-containing glass under anoxic conditions decreased dissolution ra

The study of interactions between microorganisms has led to numerous discoveries, from novel antimicrobials to insights in microbial ecology. Many approaches used for the study of microbial interactions require specialized equipment and are expensive and time intensive. This paper presents a protocol for co-culture interaction assays that are inexpensive, scalable to large sample numbers, and easily adaptable to numerous experimental designs. Microorganisms are cultured together, with each well representing one pairwise combination of microorganisms. A test organism is cultured on one side of

Biodegradation efficiency of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) hinges primarily on microbial activity. In particular, extensive interaction behavior occurs among microbial species and VOCs-degrading microbial communities during the removal of multi-component VOCs. In this study, methyl mercaptan, dichloromethane, n-hexane and toluene were selected as representative VOCs, corresponding to sulfur-containing pollutants, chlorinated organics, alkanes and aromatics commonly found in multi-component waste gas from pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. Suspension-cultured strains of Pseudomona

The metabolism of microbial communities is essential for host and environmental health. The rational design of microbiomes with targeted functional properties is an important objective but remains challenging due to complex interactions and environmental heterogeneity. Community-function landscapes address this challenge by statistically inferring impacts of species presence or absence on function. Similar to fitness landscapes, community-function landscapes estimate both additive effects and interactions (epistasis) between species that influence function. We apply landscapes to design synthe

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is characterized by chronic, relapsing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Recent studies emphasize the importance of gut microbiome dysbiosis in IBD pathogenesis, where interactions among bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses contribute to inflammation, immune modulation, and epithelial barrier disruption.
METHODS: A comprehensive narrative literature review was conducted, focusing on human data and preclinical studies. Biomedical databases were searched for research related to

Baijiu is a traditional distilled liquor unique to China. Its distinctive flavor is shaped by the synergistic activity of complex microbial communities, among which yeasts play a central role in sugar metabolism, ethanol fermentation, and aroma synthesis. In recent years, the advancement of isolation and cultivation techniques, high-throughput sequencing, metagenomics, and multi-omics technologies has deepened our understanding of yeast community compositions, succession patterns, and functional characteristics during Baijiu brewing. Among these, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was recognized as the

In recent years, gut microbiota has become a hot topic because of its important role in health and diseases. Gut microbiota can produce a series of metabolites such as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), secondary bile acids, tryptophan and indole derivatives. Over the past decade, a large number of studies have shown that oral polysaccharides can be transported to the colon and interact with gut microbiota. However, comprehensive summarization of the interactions between polysaccharides and gut microbiota is still lacking, especially from the perspective of other gut microbiota metabolites such

Rotaviral infection in neonatal animals and young children leads to acute self-limiting diarrhea, but infected adults are mainly asymptomatic. Recently, significant in-roads have been made into our understanding of this disease: both viral infection and virally manufactured nonstructural protein (NSP)4 evoke intracellular Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)]i) mobilization in native and transformed gastrointestinal epithelial cells. In neonatal mouse pup mucosa models, [Ca(2+)]i elevation leads to age-dependent halide ion movement across the plasma membrane, transepithelial Cl(-) secretion, and, unlike many micro

Urbanization reshapes soil ecosystems, yet its impacts on the composition and interactions of soil microbial communities remain insufficiently understood. Here, we use high-throughput sequencing to profile bacteria, fungi, and protists across four representative habitat types of different urbanization level-campuses, roadside greenbelts, suburban unmanaged lands, and concrete pavements in four Chinese cities spanning a broad latitudes (Changchun, Beijing, Hangzhou, Haikou). Vegetated habitats consistently structure microbial communities, whereas concrete pavements form a distinct disturbed hab

The gut microbiome influences the development of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including autoimmune uveitis, a sight-threatening ocular inflammation driven by retina-specific T cells1. Using a model of spontaneous autoimmune uveitis (sEAU) we showed that gut commensals provide immune stimuli that trigger disease2. Here we report that uveitis-promoting microbes are present in human gut flora and that colonization of germ-free (GF) mice with commensals from healthy human donors was sufficient to provoke disease. Severity of sEAU correlated with expansion of Akkermansia and contraction o
