Relevant microclimate for determining the development rate of malaria mosquitoes and possible implications of climate change.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between mosquito development and temperature is one of the keys to understanding the current and future dynamics and distribution of vector-borne diseases such as malaria. Many process-based models use mean air temperature to estimate larval development times, and hence adult vector densities and/or malaria risk. METHODS: Water temperatures in three different-sized water pools, as well as the adjacent air temperature in lowland and highland sites in western Kenya were monitored. Both air and water temperatures were fed into a widely-applied temperature-dependent d

Intestinal lumen and mucosal microclimate H+ and NH3 concentrations as factors in the etiology of experimental amebiasis.

Axenically cultivated Entamoeba histolytica, trophozoites, strains HM-1:IMSS and HM-38, were suspended in solutions of NaCl, 330 mOsm, of varying pH and ammonium concentrations. Short-term viability was inversely proportional to the ammonia concentration of the medium and was independent of the ammonium concentration and pH. The NH3-induced ameba killing was associated with a cellular alkalosis and cell swelling. While short-term trophozoite viability was unaffected by changes in the medium pH over the range 5.5-8.0, long-term viability was reduced by high pH, and of three pH values tested (6.

Impact of microclimate on immature tick-rodent host interactions (Acari: Ixodidae): implications for parasite transmission.

Rodents play a significant role in enzootic cycles of tick-borne pathogens, notably, in the northern hemisphere, tick-borne encephalitis virus and Lyme borreliosis spirochaetes. The relative numbers of nymphal and larval ticks feeding on rodents are crucial variables in determining the probability of rodent infection and the degree of amplification of infection prevalence in the tick population. Manipulation of the microclimate within quasinatural experimental arenas revealed that under increasingly dry conditions the numbers of unfed nymphal Ixodes ricinus L. questing in upper layers of the h

Geometry-informed temperature band screening for crop microclimate management in a commercial tomato greenhouse.

Commercial greenhouses require temperature strategies that coordinate natural ventilation and screens with supplementary heating while maintaining a suitable crop environment. We evaluated a low input framework that combines a spectral geometry descriptor, one hour autoregressive prediction with exogenous inputs (ARX), temperature-conditioning degree-hour indices, vapor pressure deficit (VPD) exposure, and recorded vent, screen, and heating water data to screen temperature bands for field testing. The case study used 24,132 complete five minute interval starts from a 104 m × 68 m × 6.5 m Venlo

Microclimate factors related to dengue virus burden clusters in two endemic towns of Mexico.

In dengue-endemic areas, transmission control is limited by the difficulty of achieving sufficient coverage and sustainability of interventions. To maximize the effectiveness of interventions, areas with higher transmission could be identified and prioritized. The aim was to identify burden clusters of Dengue virus (DENV) infection and evaluate their association with microclimatic factors in two endemic towns from southern Mexico. Information from a prospective population cohort study (2·5 years of follow-up) was used, microclimatic variables were calculated from satellite information, and a c

Impact of Modified Caneberry Trellis Systems on Microclimate and Habitat Suitability for Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Caneberries are trellised to facilitate harvest and agrochemical applications as well as to improve crop yield and quality. Trellising can also increase airflow and light penetration within the canopy and affect its microclimate. We compared an experimental trellis that split the canopy into halves to standard I- and V-trellises, measuring Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) fruit infestation as well as canopy temperature and relative humidity in raspberries at two commercial you-pick diversified farms. To evaluate the combined effects of trellising systems and pruning, we pruned one half of each r

Microclimate conditions alter Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) overwinter survival across climate gradients in Maine, United States.

The incidence and geographic range of vector-borne diseases have been expanding in recent decades, attributed in part to global climate change. Blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis), the primary vector for multiple tick-borne pathogens in North America, are spreading rapidly beyond their historic post-colonial range and are thought to be constrained mainly by winter temperature at northern latitudes. Our research explored whether winter climate currently limits the distribution of blacklegged ticks and the pathogens they transmit in Maine, U.S.A., by contributing to overwinter mortality of nym

Microclimate and pasture area preferences by dairy cows under high biodiversity silvopastoral system in Southern Brazil.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of microclimate on dairy cows' behaviors and their preferences for different pasture areas under high biodiversity silvopastoral system (SPSnuclei) in a subtropical climate. We surveyed three different pasture areas under SPSnuclei: shaded area around the nuclei (SAN), unshaded area around the nuclei (UAN), and all-day sunny area distant from the nuclei (SDN). In each area, the microclimatic variables were measured-air temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), illuminance (lux), wind speed (m/s), and soil surface temperature (°C). In addition,

Fogging low concentrated organic acid in a fattening pig unit - Effect on animal health and microclimate.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: In intensive pig production aerial contaminates are potential hazards for the health of animals and humans. In this study, the effect of fogging a low concentrated tartaric acid solution on pigs' health, environmental and hygiene parameters were evaluated in an inhabited fattening unit. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Pigs were housed in separate units (control group n=109 and experimental group n=110). During the whole fattening period, twice a week at 48 hour intervals, a 0.1% tartaric acid solution was aerosolized by a cold-fogging system for 20 minutes in the experimenta

Effect of Over-Tree Evaporative Cooling in Orchards on Microclimate and Accuracy of Insect Model Predictions.

Orchard design and management practices can alter microclimate and, thus, potentially affect insect development. If sufficiently large, these deviations in microclimate can compromise the accuracy of phenology model predictions used in integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Sunburn causes considerable damage in the Pacific Northwest, United States, apple-producing region. Common prevention strategies include the use of fruit surface protectants, evaporative cooling (EC), or both. This study focused on the effect of EC on ambient temperatures and model predictions for four insects (codling

[Effect of the microclimate of salt mines on T- and B-lymphocyte function in bronchial asthma patients].

A study of 55 patients with bronchial asthma revealed a reduction of the relative number of T-lymphocytes and their IgA content. The changes were most pronounced in patients during the phase of unstable remission of the disease. Disorders of the T- and B-system of lymphocytes were associated with an increased number of cortisol-resistant lymphocytes. After a course of speleotherapy one could observe an increase of the number of T-lymphocytes and their functional activity, normalization of the number of B-lymphocytes, increase of the level of IgA, reduction of the IgM content and of the relativ

The effect of urban ground cover on microclimate, growth and leaf gas exchange of oleander in Phoenix, Arizona.

We assessed how small patches of contrasting urban ground cover [mesiscape (turf), xeriscape (gravel), concrete, and asphalt] altered the microclimate and performance of adjacent oleander (Nerium oleander L.) plants in Phoenix, Arizona during fall/winter (September-February) and spring/summer (March-September). Ground-cover and oleander canopy surface temperatures, canopy air temperatures and pot soil temperatures tended to be lowest in the mesiscape and highest in the asphalt and concrete. Canopy air vapor pressure deficits were lowest in the mesiscape and highest in the asphalt plot. Rates o

Cascading effects of winter climate change in northern forests: Microclimate, microbes, biogeochemical flux, and vegetation.

Winter climate change is altering snowpack dynamics in northern forests. Snowpack decline disrupts winter soil thermal and hydrological regimes, alters soil microbial activity beneath the snowpack, and triggers cascading effects on vegetation growth and biogeochemical fluxes into the growing season. Despite growing evidence of these changes, the mechanisms underlying these cascade effects and their regional variation remain poorly understood. This review integrates multi-ecosystem-component monitoring results from snow manipulation studies at two contrasting, well-studied northern forest sites

Low-temperature range limits of trees explained by freezing tolerance, current microclimate and historical extremes.

Explaining the low-temperature limit of trees requires in situ information on the actual temperature conditions, the trees' phenology and freezing tolerance. Here, we report the seasonal course of freezing resistance and its response to local temperature in species of Larix and Abies, forming the treeline (4350-4400 m) in the south-eastern Himalayas, and Quercus and tree-size Rhododendron, reaching their upper limit in the immediate neighborhood (4270-4290 m). By linking tree-crown temperatures with on-site air temperature, we can utilize long-term meteorological records to hindcast critical f

Actively ventilating calf hutches using solar-powered fans: Effects on hutch microclimate and calf thermoregulation.

Although active ventilation via fans is an effective and widely adopted heat abatement method for use with adult dairy cattle, it has yet to be investigated in outdoor hutch-housed dairy calves despite most US calves being raised in such systems. We investigated a solar-powered fan system for outdoor calf hutches and its effect on hutch microclimate and calf thermoregulation. During summer, a 3 × 3 Latin square was replicated 4 times (n = 12 preweaning heifers) with 4-d exposure periods to minimally (CON; rear windows closed), passively (PASS; rear windows opened), or actively (ACT; solar-powe

Microclimate and host body condition influence mite population growth in a wild bird-ectoparasite system.

Parasite populations are never evenly distributed among the hosts they infect. Avian nest ectoparasites, such as mites, are no exception, as their distribution across the landscape is highly aggregated. It remains unclear if this pattern is driven by differences in transmission events alone, or if the environment that parasites inhabit after transmission also plays a role. Here, we experimentally examined the influence of the post-transmission microclimate, nest characteristics, and host condition on ectoparasite population growth in a bird-ectoparasite system. We infested barn swallow (Hirund

Urban microclimate dataset from low-cost sensor networks in a hot and humid tropical climate: Reunion Island.

This article describes an urban microclimate dataset collected on Reunion Island, a hot and humid tropical island in the southwest Indian Ocean, between October 2024 and June 2025. Measurements were acquired from two neighborhood-scale monitoring networks installed in Saint-Denis (north coast) and Le Port (west coast), representing contrasting urban morphologies and local climatic contexts. The monitoring system was based on several LoRa communication networks connecting 25 low-cost weather stations developed by the authors and deployed on residential buildings. More than ten stations were ins

Role of housing microclimate in shaping physiological, hormonal, and productive traits in goats under tropical stress conditions.

This study investigated the effects of housing systems on physiological, reproductive, hematological, biochemical, hormonal, oxidative stress and productive traits in Andamani goats under humid tropical ecosystem in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Thirty-two goats (16 males and 16 females) were housed from birth to 12 months in two contrasting environments: a newly constructed and well-ventilated shed (new shed) and an old and poorly ventilated shed (old shed). Ambient and shed microclimate data such as temperature-humidity index (THI) were monitored in both the sheds throughout the year.

An integrated experimental-computational study of the microclimate under dressings applied to intact weight-bearing skin.

Pressure ulcers (PUs) are one of the most prevalent adverse events in acute and chronic care. The root aetiological cause of PUs is sustained cell and tissue deformations, which triggers a synergistic tissue damage cascade that accelerates over relatively short time periods. Changes in skin microclimate conditions are known to indirectly contribute to PU-risk levels or to exacerbation of existing wounds. It is therefore surprising that information concerning heat accumulation under dressings is poor. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of dressings on the microclimate of weight-bearing b

Effects of microclimate during transport on physiological indicators of market pig welfare: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

During transportation, microclimatic conditions can fluctuate significantly, affecting pigs' thermal comfort and leading to compromised welfare and production losses. Although numerous studies have examined the effects of heat stress during transport on pig welfare and meat quality, it remains unclear whether these effects persist across varying transport scenarios and environmental conditions. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of microclimate during transport on physiological welfare indicators in market pigs and summarized methodologies for assessing m
