Gap Opening in Graphene-Based 2D Heterostructures: The Interplay of Spin-Orbit Coupling, Hybridization, and Symmetry.

Intercalating a Pb monolayer between graphene and SiC(0001) creates a densely packed metallic layer in close proximity to graphene. Using low-temperature four-point-probe scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory, we correlate the local conductivity of this two-dimensional heterostructure with spatially resolved spectroscopy. By varying the tunneling gap, we distinguish the density-of-states contributions of the decoupled graphene sheet and the buried Pb interface layer. At large tip-sample separations, the spectra resemble those of charge-neutral, quasi-freestanding graphene

Picoscale Light-Matter Interactions in Plasmonic, Polaritonic, and van der Waals Nanostructures.

Picophotonics describes light-matter interactions in which atomic-scale structure, sub-nanometer confinement, or picometer-scale structural variations significantly influence optical response. This review establishes a unified framework for understanding these interactions across plasmonic picocavities, molecular systems, and van der Waals (vdW) materials and heterostructures. We examine key mechanisms governing extreme optical confinement, including nonlocality, electron tunneling, charge-transfer effects, excitonic interactions, and phonon/plasmon polaritons. Experimental approaches, includi

Tunneling Conductivity Switching by Reversible Electric-Field-Induced Proton Transfer for a Hydrogen-Bonding Heterobilayer Film.

Heteromolecular interactions are responsible for a variety of functions. We report the first observation of reversible tunneling conductivity switching induced by external electric field (EEF) for a proton (H+) donor/acceptor bilayer film on Au substrates under ambient conditions at room temperature. The heterobilayer film was self-assembled through two-step immersion: the H+-donor, the H+-electron-correlated molecule (catechol-fused bis(propylthio)tetrathiafulvalene), was hydrogen-bonded to the H+-accepting imidazole-terminated undecanethiolate self-assembled monolayer on Au(111). The bilayer

Single cobalt atoms and two oxidation states: on-surface synthesis of a 2D metal-organic framework via transmetallation.

Characterizing the chemical and physical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial for harnessing their unique functionalities in the design of next-generation catalysts and spintronic materials. Here, we report the formation of a homometallic MOF via co-deposition of Mn-tetrapyridylporphyrin (MnTPyP) molecules and Co atoms on an Au(100) surface. Low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements show that the predominant unit cell of the self-assembled MnTPyP film is commensurate with Au(100) and exhibits square symmetry, reflecting the substrate sym

Buffer-Assisted Epitaxy of Large-Area Ultraflat θ-Tellurene with Mirror Symmetry.

Tellurene, covalently bonded tellurium (Te) atoms, is one of the most chemically tractable materials in the low-dimensional community. However, the monoelemental nature and structural simplicity limit synthesis-accessible tellurene merely in the β-phase, assembled by helical Te chains with a trigonal lattice. The nonplanar structure confines tellurene at the micrometer scale and poses technological challenges toward van der Waals integrations. Here, we report an ultraflat phase of tellurene, named as θ-tellurene, over the centimeter scale via a buffer-assisted epitaxial method on the Au(100) c

Characterization of an Unexpected μ3 Adsorption of Molecular Oxygen on Ag(100) with Low-Temperature STM.

Precise description of the interaction between molecular oxygen and metal surfaces is one of the most challenging topics in quantum chemistry. In this work, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to identify and characterize an adsorption state of molecular oxygen that coordinates to three Ag atoms (μ3) on Ag(100). Surprisingly, μ3-O2 cannot be identified as a stable configuration with generalized gradient approximation (GGA)-level density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Through inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS), we identify three vibrational modes of i

Diaminotriazinyl-Substituted N-Heterotriangulene: Hydrogen Bonding-Driven Self-Assembly in the Solid State, in the Gas Phase and on Surfaces.

We report the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of a dimethylmethylene-bridged N-heterotriangulene (N-HTA) with diaminotriazinyl groups to guide the self-assembly through directional hydrogen bonding. Mass spectrometry collision-induced dissociation experiments indicated the formation of multiply charged clusters in the gas phase. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the solid state packing is governed by an interplay between the hydrogen bonding and the solvent system used for crystallization. The self-assembly on both semiconducting and insulating surfaces upon s

Synthesis and Two-Dimensional Chiral Self-Assembly of Oxygen-Incorporated Dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene.

The oxygen-incorporated analogue of dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene (O-DBOV), namely, peri-bisxanthenoanthanthrene, was synthesized through the oxidative cycloetherification of a dihydroxy-substituted precursor, using a catalytic amount of KI and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an external oxidant. O-DBOV is prochiral to have two-dimensional (2D) chirality upon interaction with solid surfaces. Notably, investigation of the self-assembled monolayers of O-DBOV on Au(111) surfaces by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions revealed the formation of 2D homochiral domai

Packing Biomolecules into Sierpiński Triangles with Global Organizational Chirality.

Fractals are found in nature and play important roles in biological functions. However, it is challenging to controllably prepare biomolecule fractals. In this study, a series of Sierpiński triangles with global organizational chirality is successfully constructed by the coassembly of l-tryptophan and 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)benzene molecules on Ag(111). The chirality is switched when replacing l-tryptophan by d-tryptophan. The fractal structures are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at the single-molecule level. Density functional theory calculations reveal that intermol

Unambiguous one-molecule conductance measurements under ambient conditions.

One of the challenging goals of molecular electronics is to wire exactly one molecule between two electrodes. This is generally nontrivial under ambient conditions. We describe a new and straightforward protocol for unambiguously isolating a single organic molecule on a metal surface and wiring it inside a nanojunction under ambient conditions. Our strategy employs C(60) terminal groups which act as molecular beacons allowing molecules to be visualized and individually targeted on a gold surface using an scanning tunneling microscope. After isolating one molecule, we then use the C(60) groups

Formation and Structure of Highly Ordered Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au(111) via Vapor Deposition of Dioctyl Diselenides.

The formation and growth processes of octaneselenolate (C8Se) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) from dioctyl diselenides were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) as a function of vapor deposition time at 363 K. STM observations revealed unique surface features of the C8Se SAMs on Au(111) prepared at 363 K for 1 h, consisting of various types of narrow, bright molecular rows and broad, bright molecular rows with three-directional orientations. After increasing the deposition time from 1 and 6 h, interestingly, the structural quality of C8Se SAMs is greatly enhanced, sh

Tip-Induced Structural Transitions in a Buckybowl Molecular Assembly.

Conformational switching of three-dimensional curved molecules on surfaces is governed by complex potential energy landscapes shaped by substrate coupling and intermolecular constraints. Here, using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we investigate tip-induced structural transitions of individual sumanene buckybowls confined within a self-assembled 2U1D honeycomb lattice on Au(111). By combining tip proximity with bias-driven excitation, we trigger conformational switching that yields two operationally distinguishable outcomes: bowl inversion and molecular rotation, producing chara

Electronic States of Single Perovskite Quantum Dots in Weak and Strong Interaction Regimes: Implications in Electrically Pumped Quantum Emitters.

We investigate the effect of Coulomb interactions on the electronic states of a single perovskite quantum dot (PQD), CsPbBr3, through scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S). Under a weak interaction regime, where the time-averaged occupation of electrons in a PQD remains zero, the peaks observed in the differential tunneling conductance (dI/dV) spectrum correspond to the single-particle density of states (DOS) without any electron-electron correlation. However, with a shorter tunnel distance between the STM tip and PQD, additional electrons are trapped in the QD, leading to a stron

Direct observation of nodeless superconductivity and phonon modes in electron-doped copper oxide Sr1-xNdxCuO2.

The microscopic understanding of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent complexity of crystal structures in these materials. We used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study the electron-doped copper oxide compound Sr1- x Nd x CuO2, which has only bare cations separating the CuO2 planes and thus the simplest infinite-layer structure of all cuprate superconductors. Tunneling conductance spectra of the major CuO2 planes in the superconducting state revealed direct evidence for a nodeless pairing gap, regardless of variation of its magnitud

On-Surface Synthesis of Polyphenylene Wires Comprising Rigid Aliphatic Bicyclo[1.1.1]Pentane Isolator Units.

Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) motifs are of growing importance to the pharmaceutical industry as sp3 -rich bioisosteres of benzene rings and as molecular building blocks in materials science. Herein we explore the behavior of 1,3-disubstituted BCP moieties on metal surfaces by combining low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy / non-contact atomic force microscopy studies with density functional theory modeling. We examine the configuration of individual BCP-containing precursors on Au(111), their supramolecular assembly and thermally activated dehalogenative coupling reactions, affording p

Phase transition and chirality switching of dibenzopentacene on Pb(111) surface driven by Coulomb expansion.

The dibenzopentacene (DBPen) molecules on the Pb(111) substrate have been investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Under the influence of an electric field, DBPen molecules undergo the phase transitions between the 2D mobile phase and the close-packed phase, as well as point and organizational chirality switching. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the electric field significantly modulates the charge transfer from the substrate to the molecules and induces the Coulomb expansion of the molecular lattice, resulting in phase transitions and chirality switchin

Towards π-wires on a semiconductor surface: Benzyne on Si(001).

Towards the goal of covalently bound molecular wires on silicon, the adsorption of benzyne on Si(001) was studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and density functional calculations (DFT). The benzyne molecule is found to adsorb preferentially via the strained triple bond on one dimer of the Si(001) surface which results in an intact π system covalently bound to the surface. With increasing coverage, the molecules primarily adsorb along the dimer rows; on stepped surfaces, these molecular wir

Self-assembled 1-octadecanethiol monolayers on graphene for mercury detection.

We report studies on surface modification of graphene with 1-octadecanethiol and its application as heavy metal sensors. The alkanethiol molecules can self-assemble into large-scale highly ordered monolayers on single-layer graphene regardless of the roughness of graphene surfaces inherited from the underlying amorphorous silicon oxide (SiO2) dielectric substrates. Atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy imaging of modified graphene sheets on SiO2 was conducted to reveal configuration details of the self-assembled structure. Thickness-driven phase selection for epitaxial helical tellurium on a van der Waals superconductor.

The unique chiral structure and strong spin-orbit coupling of helical Te make it a compelling platform for realizing novel topological quantum phenomena through van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. However, progress has been hindered by a lack of precise control over the structural phase and interface quality of Te during ultrathin film growth. Here, we demonstrate a robust pathway for synthesizing helical Te on the superconductor NbSe2, governed by a thickness-driven phase selection mechanism. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we show that Te initially forms a kinetically trapped si

Iron Vacancy Tunable Superconductor-Insulator Transition in FeSe/SrTiO_{3} Monolayer.

The Fe_{4}Se_{5} with a sqrt[5]×sqrt[5] Fe vacancy order is suggested to be a Mott insulator and the parent state of bulk FeSe superconductor. The iron vacancy ordered state has been considered as a Mott insulator and the parent compound of bulk FeSe-based superconductors. However, for the superconducting FeSe/SrTiO_{3} monolayer (FeSe/STO) with an interface-enhanced high transition temperature (T_{c}), the electronic evolution from its Fe vacancy ordered parent phase to the superconducting state, has not been explored due to the challenge to realize an Fe vacancy order in the FeSe/STO monolay
