Development of an experimental model of Microsporum canis infection in cats.

An experimental infection model was developed for reliable induction of Microsporum canis skin infections in cats, using a defined number of macroconidia harvested from the fungus in culture. The strain of M. canis used produced highly fluorescent hairs under ultraviolet illumination. Kittens 8 to 9 weeks of age (n = 6) received 10(5) macroconidia applied topically to a closely-shaved area of skin. Sites were dressed with an occlusive bandage for 3 days, then grooming was restricted for an additional 4 weeks. Lesions were first observed 2 weeks after inoculation, enlarged over the following 6 …

Mycetoma-like granuloma in a cat caused by Microsporum canis.

A solitary subcutaneous nodule from a Persian cat consisted of coalescing mycetoma-like granulomas containing abnormal hyphae of Microsporum canis. Overlying hair follicles were heavily laden with dermatophytes but had little associated perifollicular inflammation. The complex classification of dermatophyte-induced dermal inflammatory lesions is reviewed.

Taxonomy of Exophiala werneckii and its relationship to Microsporum mansonii.

Study of the neotype culture of Exophiala werneckii (Cladosporium werneckii), as well as additional isolates, has shown that the yeast-like and hyphal conidiogenous cells are annellides. E. werneckii cannot be accommodated in Cladosporium, a genus characterized by catenulate holoblastic coanidia. E. werneckii and the dematiaceous hyphomycete that Castellani misidentified as Microsporum mansonii (Cladosporium mansonii) are two entirely different fungi. M. mansonii is considered to be a synonym of the Malassezia furfur since both names were used to describe in tissue the etiologic agent of pityr…

Microsporum canis-Induced Tinea Capitis: A Rapid Screening Algorithm.

Tinea capitis is a common fungal infection of the scalp, primarily affecting children, and caused by fungi like Trichophyton and Microsporum. Its pathogenesis is influenced by both host-specific and environmental factors, resulting in various clinical presentations including hair loss and scaling of the scalp. We present the case of an eight-year-old male with tinea capitis, characterized by itching and hair loss in the occipital area. Examination revealed characteristic findings on trichoscopy, and direct examination of hair confirmed parasitization. Treatment with terbinafine was initiated, …

Figurate erythematous lesion by Microsporum canis in immunosuppressed patient.

Dermatophytes are fungi capable of invading keratinized tissues. Isolation of the fungus with the culture is essential to guide the treatment, because there are more resistant species like Microsporum canis. The chronic use of corticosteroids leads to the deregulation of immunity, promoting atypical manifestations of infections. Topical antifungal therapy is often insufficient, requiring systemic medications. We describe the case of a patient undergoing systemic corticosteroid therapy with a large figurate lesion who presented complete response to exclusively topical treatment.

Unusual strains of Microsporum audouinii causing tinea in Europe.

We comment on an unusual strain of Microsporum (M.) audouinii. It was isolated from tinea corporis of a boy who lived in Germany and most likely had acquired his infection during a stay on a farm with animal husbandry in Poland. The strain showed features of M. canis (plenty of markedly rough-walled macroconidia, growth on rice, positive hair perforation) as well as of M. audouinii (white thallus, long macroconidia with central constriction) and in vitro it degraded hair of various mammals. Because its ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region showed 99.9% homology to a M. audouinii referen…

Microsporum canis in a neonatal intensive care unit patient.

A 45-day-old male neonate (born 25 weeks and 5 days) presented with an annular, erythematosquamous eruption covering the head, neck, trunk, upper limbs and thighs. The eruption most resembled tinea corporis, however unusual the setting. Routine fungal culture grew Microsporum canis. No contacts could be identified. No previous case of tinea corporis had been seen in this neonatal unit, and very few reports are in the literature, particularly regarding this zoophilic organism. Our patient cleared with topical miconazole 2% cream applied twice daily for 24 days. This case highlights the importan…

Generalized Microsporum canis dermatophytosis in six Yorkshire terrier dogs.

Six Yorkshire terrier dogs with generalized, chronic dermatophytosis caused by Microsporum canis were seen over a 3-year period. Specific tests showed that they also had concurrent leishmaniosis (four cases), leishmaniosis and ehrlichiosis (one case) or diabetes mellitus (one case). Although specific therapy for these infectious diseases was instituted and the dogs were treated systemically and topically with appropriate antifungal drugs, only partial clinical resolution of the dermatophytosis was achieved. M. canis infection resolved in the dog with diabetes mellitus after stabilizing the dia…

[Epidemic outbreak of tinea corporis due to Microsporum gypseum].

A small epidemic of tinea corporis due to M. gypseum is reported. There were 13 children affected, ages 1-15 years. These children belonged to 6 neighbouring families and all used a common "playground", an empty lot located nearby. Cultures were positive for M. gypseum in the 13 children and the agent was also isolated from 2 soils collected in the playing-ground. Soil isolates were classified as N. gypsea. Clinically, the lesions were circinated and had active borders, they were preferentially located in the trunk. Most children (8/13) had multiple lesions. These and other pertinent aspects a

Infection by Microsporum canis in Paediatric Patients: A Veterinary Perspective.

Microsporum canis is a dermatophyte fungus of which cats and dogs are recognized as the natural hosts. M. canis is also easily transmitted to humans, causing lesions to the glabrous skin (tinea corporis) and to the head (tinea capitis). The present study describes some cases of infection with M. canis in children from a veterinary perspective, highlighting some important features of this clinical entity (e.g., the necessity to identify the animal source of infection with appropriate diagnostic tests; the fact that infected cats may present with no or atypical dermatological signs; and the impo…

Invasive Microsporum canis causing rhinitis and stomatitis in a cat.

Microsporum canis is a pathogenic fungus that typically causes dermatophytosis in cats. This report describes a cat with a Microsporum canis infection causing invasive fungal rhinitis that extended through the hard palate, resulting in adjacent stomatitis. Treatment with itraconazole and terbinafine resolved the infection.

Microsporum gypseum infection in the Siena area in 2005-2006.

Fourteen cases of dermatophytosis caused by Microsporum gypseum, representing 6.8% of all dermatophytic infections reported, were diagnosed in Siena, Italy, between 2005 and 2006. There were as follows: six cases of tinea corporis, one case of tinea corporis associated with tinea capitis, one case of tinea corporis associated with tinea barbae, one kerion on the head, one tinea cruris, one tinea faciei, one tinea barbae, two onychomycosis. In the three subjects with tinea corporis, the clinical appearance was impetigo-like, psoriasis-like and pityriasis rosea-like respectively. In another case…

[Superficial infections caused by Microsporum canis in humans and animals].

Dermatophytic infections caused by M. canis in humans and animals have a world wide distribution and they are zoonotic. The objective in this work was to know the frequency of M. canis infections in humans and pets. We studied our cases from January 1994 to December 2002. The human samples were obtained from a Dermatological Department in a General Hospital and we registered the next data: age, sex, job, and affected area. The animal samples were obtained from a mycological veterinary laboratory, and we registered the presence or absence of clinical lesions. A total of 46 clinical cases of M.

[Microsporum nanum. A fourth report of human infection in Brazil].

The authors present the fourth Brazilian case of human Microsporum nanum (M. nanum) infection. A child of nine months old presents cutaneous dorsal lesions compatible with tinea corporis, which appeared one month before. The culture revealed M. nanum. The lesions resolved spontaneously after a month. Epidemiologic investigation in the patient's place of origin identified swine infected by M. nanum, indicating the probable source of the infection.

The changing clinical picture of Microsporum canis infections in Sweden.

All 22 cases of infections with Microsporum canis verified by culture during a five-year period were surveyed. Only tinea corporis was found. The clinical picture was varied and in more than half of the cases the preliminary diagnosis was other than tinea. The classical tinea capitis was not found in any case. Direct KOH-mounts showed poor correlation to the cultural findings (positive in 33%). It is concluded that mycological screening of certain dermatological disorders should be performed by culturing.

Treatment of Microsporum spp. tinea capitis with pulsed oral terbinafine.

Oral terbinafine is widely used in the treatment of superficial dermatomycoses as well as subcutaneous and systemic mycoses. It is also useful in treating tinea capitis, although for Microsporum canis and some ectothrix organisms, the effectiveness of the drug may be less than for some endothrix infections. In this study, we undertook a double-blind randomized trial comparing standard and double doses of terbinafine given in a pulsed protocol (1 week on, 3 weeks off) in treating Microsporum spp. tinea capitis in 42 individuals. We found that pulsed terbinafine at a higher dose did not improve …
