BACKGROUND: Lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET) is a common musculoskeletal disorder caused by overuse, resulting in microtrauma to the extensor tendons. Because of its complex pathophysiology and high recurrence rate, LET poses significant treatment challenges. The effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in treating LET remains controversial.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the therapeutic benefits of ESWT by comparing its effects to those of both placebo ESWT and conventional physical therapy.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 1.
METHODS: A systematic review of rando

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a joint disorder predominantly affecting the knee, elbow, and ankle of children and adolescents. This comprehensive review delves into the epidemiology, etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and treatment of OCD.
RESULTS: The most common cause of OCD is repetitive microtrauma, typically associated with sports activities, alongside other significant factors such as genetic predisposition, ischemia, and obesity. In early stages or when lesions are small, OCD often presents as non-specific, vaguely localized pain during physical

Distal clavicle osteolysis (DCO) is an overuse injury characterized by pain and bone resorption at the acromioclavicular (AC) joint due to repetitive microtrauma. Early diagnosis is critical to prevent prolonged symptoms and functional impairment, as conservative treatment is most effective when initiated promptly. We present the case of a 30-year-old male who initially injured his right shoulder during a fall in judo and reinjured it while lifting a patient. He reported persistent AC joint pain exacerbated by overhead activities and wearing a lead apron during surgery. Physical examination re

INTRODUCTION: Anogenital warts (AGW) are benign proliferative lesions on the epithelium or mucosa caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11. HPV infection occurs when viral particles enter the basal cells through microtrauma in the epithelium. AGW demonstrate a predilection for involvement of any region of the genitalia, anal or perianal area, inguinal, pubic region, and is very common in the traumatized area during sexual intercourse. Immunotherapy is one of the therapeutic modalities for AGW. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine given by intralesional injection can be a pr

Calcific tendinitis is a relatively rare condition in which calcium is inappropriately deposited in tendons, resulting in a local inflammatory reaction that can cause severe symptoms in certain cases. The cause of this disease process is not completely understood, although repetitive microtrauma likely plays a role in its development. Although the disorder most often involves the rotator cuff, it can affect other structures throughout the body, such as the tendons about the ankle and hip-including the rectus femoris and gluteus maximus. Nonoperative management typically involves using an anti-

Suprascapular nerve entrapment syndrome (SNES) is an often-overlooked etiology of shoulder pain and weakness. Treatment varies depending on the location and etiology of entrapment, which can be described as compressive or traction lesions. In some cases, treating the primary cause of impingement (ie. rotator cuff tear, ganglion cyst, etc.) is sufficient to relieve pressure on the nerve. In other cases where impingement is caused by dynamic microtrauma (as seen in overhead athletes and laborers), treatment is often more conservative. Conservative first-line therapy includes rehabilitation progr

This report presents an unusual case of persistent groin and lower abdominal pain following robotic-assisted inguinal hernia repair (R-IHR), along with a brief review of the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pubic symphysis stress reaction with adjacent pelvic girdle myositis following R-IHR, a musculoskeletal complication pairing not previously described in the hernia repair or robotic surgery literature. Imaging findings revealed edema and capsular hypertrophy at the pubic symphysis with diffuse pelvic girdle myositis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), findin

Burn scars remain a serious physical and psychological problem for the affected people. Clinical studies as well as basic scientific research have shown that medical needling can significantly increase the quality of burn scars with comparatively low risk and stress for the patient with regards to skin elasticity, moisture, erythema and transepidermal water loss. However, medical needling has no influence on repigmentation of large hypopigmented scars. The goal of this study is to evaluate whether two established methods - needling (for improvement of scar quality) and non-cultured autologous

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendinopathy is a degenerative process of the tendon associated with diminished vascularity, microtrauma, and aging. Nonoperative treatments such as activity modification, immobilization, night splints, and physical therapy have good outcomes for the majority of patients. However, there are cohorts of patients that remain symptomatic despite use of all nonoperative measures that eventually require surgical intervention. The present study reports the preliminary short-term clinical outcomes of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) for treatment for Achilles tendinopathy.

The rotator cuff is the primary dynamic stabiliser of the glenohumeral joint and is placed under significant stress during overhead and contact sports. Mechanisms of injury include repetitive microtrauma, usually seen in the athlete involved in overhand sports, and macrotrauma associated with contact sports. Rotator cuff injury and dysfunction in the overhand athlete may be classified based on aetiology as primary impingement, primary tensile overload, and secondary impingement and tensile overload resulting from glenohumeral instability. A thorough history and physical examination are paramou

Peripheral nerve lesions are uncommon but serious injuries which may delay or preclude an athlete's safe return to sports. Early, accurate anatomical diagnosis is essential. Nerve lesions may be due to acute injury (e.g. from a direct blow) or chronic injury secondary to repetitive microtrauma (entrapment). Accurate diagnosis is based upon physical examination and a knowledge of the relative anatomy. Palpation, neurological testing and provocative manoeuvres are mainstays of physical diagnosis. Diagnostic suspicion can be confirmed by electrophysiological testing, including electromyography an

INTRODUCTION: A patient presented for recalcitrant right hip pain secondary to femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) after blunt motor vehicle trauma and following the development of a 12 cm heterotopic ossification (HO). FAI is an increasingly recognized diagnosis where the hip joint is exposed to repeated femoral microtrauma from high-level physical activity or trauma, often causing labral ossification, and perhaps underlying a similar biological mechanism to HO.
CASE REPORT: In this case report, we have an otherwise healthy 49-year-old male who was involved in a high-speed motor vehicle colli

BACKGROUND: Posterior labral injuries can cause shoulder pain and instability. Posterior labral tears account for up to 47% of all tears treated arthroscopically. Injuries can result from repetitive microtrauma, recurrent posterior subluxations, or traumatic posterior dislocations. Posterior labral injuries can be reliably repaired with arthroscopic surgery. A systematic review by Delong et al found improved return to play along with lower recurrence rates when repairing these injuries using an arthroscopic approach compared to an open approach.
INDICATIONS: The main indication includes a sym

Basing on the literature, the information on the shoulder-hand syndrome in stroke patients is presented. The syndrome is believed to be a clinical form of algodystrophy of the upper extremity. The main signs and symptoms include pain and considerable reduction of movement in shoulder joint, wrist and hand. The condition usually develops 1-6 months after stroke with pain and loss of range of motion in the shoulder at the beginning; then the distal part of the extremity is involved. The syndrome is considered to develop in three consecutive phases: I--acute, II--dystrophic and III--atrophic. Bes

Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common, self-limited clinical entity resulting from ultrastructural muscle microtrauma. Despite its benign course, DOMS may clinically and radiologically mimic other muscle injuries, creating diagnostic uncertainty for clinicians and athletes. Given the increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in elite and recreational athletes, accurate recognition of DOMS on imaging has become essential to avoid misclassification as a structural muscle injury. Inappropriate management decisions, such as additional diagnostic workup, excessive restriction fr

OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the history of an occupational disease which has now disappeared: acroosteolysis of manual tank cleaners in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is a rare disease characterized by destructive alterations of the distal phalanges of the hands.
METHODS: All the available literature on this disease was examined. The history of acroosteolysis was studied within the general framework of the history of the discovery of adverse health effects of exposure to vinyl chloride, and this history was studied up to the end of the 1960's.
RESULTS: The disease was

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of pain on the plantar aspect of the hindfoot and may become refractory even after months of conservative care. It is common not only in athletes engaged in activities involving repeated microtrauma to the heel, such as running, walking, basketball or tennis, but also in middle-aged non-athletes with risk factors such as prolonged standing, excessive body weight, foot posture abnormalities and gastrocnemius tightness. Surgical options such as partial plantar fasciotomy or surgical release of the medial gastrocnemius aim to reduce tension in the Achill

Tendon injuries and other tendon disorders represent a common diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in sports medicine, resulting in chronic and long-lasting problems. Tissue degeneration is a common finding in many sports-related tendon complaints. In the great majority of spontaneous tendon ruptures, chronic degenerative changes are seen at the rupture site of the tendon (1). Systemic diseases and diseases specifically deteriorating the normal structure of the tendon (i.e. foreign bodies, and metabolic, inherited and infectious tendon diseases) are only rarely the cause of tendon pathology. Introduction Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is defined as pain in the lower back that persists for more than three months. It is a common musculoskeletal condition and a major contributor to functional impairment and social limitations among young adults. Hamstring flexibility refers to the ability of the hamstring muscles to stretch to their full length. Since both the hamstrings and lumbar extensor muscles originate from the pelvis, a biomechanical relationship may exist between them. Decreased flexibility or weakness in these muscles may contribute to the development of low back pain. Tight h
