Central mesencephalic reticular formation control of the near response: lens accommodation circuits.

To view a nearby target, the three components of the near response are brought into play: 1) the eyes are converged through contraction of the medial rectus muscles to direct both foveae at the target, 2) the ciliary muscle contracts to allow the lens to thicken, increasing its refractive power to focus the near target on the retina, and 3) the pupil constricts to increase depth of field. In this study, we utilized retrograde transsynaptic transport of the N2c strain of rabies virus injected into the ciliary body of one eye of macaque monkeys to identify premotor neurons that control lens acco

[Effect of glycerin on several indices of intracranial hemodynamics and the electroencephalogram of wakeful cats with experimental intracerebral hemorrhage].

An intravenous infusion of glycerin to cats 24-48 hours after an intracerebral hemorrhage contributes to normalization of the EEG, Intensifies the local blood flow in the visual cortex, thalamus and reticular formation of the midbrain in both hemispheres (predominantly in the regions of the right affected hemisphere). The drug produces a fall in the absolute values of the intracranial pressure without its secondary rise after infusion is discontinued and causes a moderate rise of the perfusion pressure. The intravenous infusion of glycerin is more effective than its single injection.

Regional brain glucose metabolism during morning and evening wakefulness in humans: preliminary findings.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The mechanisms that maintain wakefulness across the day, in the face in increasing sleep drive, are largely unknown. The goal of this pilot study was to examine regional relative brain glucose metabolism during morning and evening wakefulness in healthy humans. DESIGN: [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scans were conducted during quiet wakefulness in the morning and in the evening. Statistical parametric mapping was used to compare relative regional glucose metabolism during the 2 scans. Subjects also completed subjective ratings of alertness. SETTING: U

[Divergence paralysis due to a lesion of the lateral tegmentum of the midbrain caused by thalamic hemorrhage].

A 66-year-old diabetic and hypertensive man suddenly developed right hemiplegia. Examination revealed right hemiplegia including his face, vertical gaze palsy, and divergence paralysis. The cranial CT scan disclosed a left thalamic hemorrhage as large as 40 mm in diameter, which extended to the midbrain. He was treated medically and his divergence paralysis improved. But all other symptoms remained for the next 11 months and he eventually died of acute retroperitoneal hemorrhage. The autopsy revealed spongy state and gliosis extending from the left thalamic nuclei to the left midbrain. In the

[Sites of seizure discharges after intracerebroventricular injection of anisodamine and the antagonism by diazepam in rabbits].

Anisodamine is a tropine alkaloid isolated from Scopolia tangutica Maxim. To determine the original sites of anisodamine seizure discharge, permanent electrodes were implanted into different parts of the brain in rabbits and the electrical activities were continuously recorded by monopolar leads. Injection of anisodamine 1.5 mg/kg into the lateral ventricle of conscious rabbits always produced abnormal discharges. The spike discharges appeared first in the amygdala and consisted of rhythmic large surface-positive spikes. Multiple spikes then appeared in the hippocampus, caudate nucleus, midbra

Vertical gaze paralysis and intermittent unresponsiveness in a patient with a thalamomesencephalic stroke.

A patient with paralysis of upward gaze and downward gaze, absent oculocephalic reflexes, and absent vertical saccades also demonstrated intermittent stupor over the first 9 days of presentation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an infarct in the tegmentum of the mesencephalon including the right red nucleus and the periaqueductal area, superior to the oculomotor nucleus, and contiguous through the left thalamus. The infarct included the area around the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF), as well as the midbrain reticular formation. Mechanis

Spinal ascending pathways in amphibians: cells of origin and main targets.

As part of a research program on the evolution of somatosensory systems in vertebrates, the various components of ascending spinal projections were studied with in vivo and in vitro tract-tracing techniques in representative species of amphibians (the large green frog, Rana perezi, the clawed toad, Xenopus laevis and the ribbed newt, Pleurodeles waltl). Three main ascending sensory channels, each with largely separate targets, were demonstrated: 1. Ascending projections via the dorsal funiculus include primary and nonprimary projections that ascend to terminate mainly in the dorsal column nucl

[Effect of gutimine on the electroencephalogram and cerebral blood supply of cats with intracerebral hemorrhage].

It was shown in experiments on conscious cats 1-2 days after intracerebral hemorrhage (administration of 2 ml autogenous blood in the internal capsule of the right hemisphere) that intravenous injection of 50 mg/kg gutimin led to an increase in the brain blood supply. The increased local blood flow was recorded in the cortex, thalamus of the affected hemisphere, particularly in the midbrain reticular formation. Experiments in vitro demonstrated that gutimin had a direct dilatatory action on isolated strips of the cat internal maxillary artery, with this action being determined by inhibition of

A contributory role for midbrain progesterone in the facilitation of female sexual behavior in rats.

Progesterone (P) facilitation of sexual receptivity in rodents has been achieved by intracranial administration to the ventral hypothalamus; the preoptic area; and midbrain areas such as central gray, mesencephalic reticular formation, and ventral tegmental nucleus. In our laboratory, by far the most effective site in rats has been the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN). However, several reports of sensitivity to P in the midbrain of rats and other rodent species led us to investigate whether stimulation of the ventral midbrain of female rats might contribute to facilitation of sex

Divergence paralysis caused by acute midbrain infarction.

A 41-year-old woman with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and dyslipidemia abruptly developed vertigo, truncal ataxia and divergence paralysis. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the presence of infarction in the left superior paramedian mesencephalic artery involving the vicinity of the periaqueductal gray matter. The symptoms rapidly resolved under the administration of anti-platelet agents. The precise location of the hypothetical divergence center of the ocular motor system remains unclear because the lesions responsible for divergence paralysis are rarely identified on neu

Excitant amino acids and audiogenic seizures in the genetically epilepsy-prone rat. II. Efferent seizure propagating pathway.

Previous studies indicate that the inferior colliculus is the brain stem auditory nucleus most sensitive to the chemical blockade of audiogenic seizures in the genetically epilepsy-prone rat. Other auditory structures do not appear to be as important. This study attempted to define the efferent pathways involved in propagation of the seizure from the colliculus to the spinal cord where the motor components of the convulsion are generated. This study also determined whether certain nuclei which have been implicated in the propagation of seizures in other epilepsy models are involved in audiogen

[Substance P in the central mechanisms of the escape reaction].

The role of substance P in the central mechanisms of escape reaction elicited by electrical stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamus was investigated in chronic experiments on rabbits. Intravenous injection of substance P (30 micrograms/kg) led to a short-term (less than 10 min) increase in the threshold of stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamus and to more stable (up to 1.5 h) disorders of the hippocampal-hypothalamic relations. After substance P injection the inhibitory effects of the dorsal hippocampus but not the facilitating influences of the midbrain reticular formation on exci

Electrical stimulation of the midbrain central gray facilitates lateral vestibulospinal activation of back muscle EMG in the rat.

Electrical stimulation in the midbrain central gray in urethane-anesthetized female rats increased responses of the deep back muscles lateral longissimus and medial longissimus to stimulation of the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN). During central gray stimulation, LVN stimuli led to larger muscle responses, recruitment of new motor units, and decreased latency of muscle response. Effective central gray sites are hypothesized to act through axons descending to medullary reticular formation. Results are consistent with participation of these neuronal groups in the activation of lordosis behavio

[Bilateral palpebral ptosis with unilateral paralysis of upward gaze: a case report].

The authors report a case of bilateral ptosis with miosis, paralysis of upward gaze and of smooth pursuit movements to the right, as well as a slowly regressive state of lassitude. This syndrome followed a haemorrhagic brain stem infarction. After a review of the pathophysiology of ptosis and of vertical eye movements, together with analysis of data provided by computerized tomography studies--since the case was not fatal--explanations are offered for each clinical sign and it is proposed that the lesion, a paramedian, slightly deviated to the right haemorrhagic focus in the midbrain, with a d

Hypothalamic effects on medullary reticular activation of deep back muscle EMG.

Medullary reticular stimulation can activate deep back muscle EMG in urethane-anesthetized female rats. Midbrain central gray stimulation can facilitate brainstem reticular control over deep back muscles. Since these deep back muscles lateral longissimus (LL) and medial longissimus (ML) execute the vertebral dorsiflexion of lordosis behavior, and since the motor control hierarchy sketched above parallels lordosis behavior circuitry, we tested the hypothesis that medial hypothalamic lesions (which, in behavioral experiments, decrease lordosis) can also reduce medullary reticular activation of d

Myotonic dystrophy with alveolar hypoventilation and hypersomnia: a clinicopathological study.

We present a case of myotonic dystrophy accompanied by alveolar hypoventilation and hypersomnia. Case history, pulmonary function tests, polygraphic recording, and multiple sleep latency test, concomitant with a restrictive ventilatory abnormality, suggested a central origin of alveolar hypoventilation and hypersomnia in our case. The most significant neuropathological findings were in the tegmentum of the brain stem. Severe neuronal loss and gliosis were observed in the midbrain and pontine raphe, particularly in dorsal raphe nucleus and superior central nucleus. Pontine and medullary reticul

Morphine-induced rotation in naive, nonlesioned rats.

In rats injected with morphine in the midbrain reticular formation, pronounced ipsilateral rotation behavior was elicited by mild auditory and visual stimuli. The frequency of occurrence and rate of rotation were dose-dependent. This effect was site specific and drug specific; other drugs (except heroin) failed to induce this behavior. Naloxone potentiated the morphine rotation. Pretreatment with drugs that either potentiated or attenuated the morphine rotation indicated involvement of the noradrenergic and cholinergic systems and excluded a role for the dopaminergic system. No analgesia was o

In vivo sequestration of Plasmodium falciparum-infected human erythrocytes: a severe combined immunodeficiency mouse model for cerebral malaria.

Cerebral malaria is a fatal complication of infection by Plasmodium falciparum in man. The neurological symptoms that characterize this form of malarial disease are accompanied by the adhesion of infected erythrocytes to the vasculature of the brain. To study this phenomenon in vivo, an acute phase severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mouse model was developed in which sequestration of P. falciparum-infected human erythrocytes took place. During acute cerebral malaria in humans, the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is induced in vascular endothelium by inflammatory r

Morphological analysis of descending tracts in mouse spinal cord using tissue clearing, tissue expansion and tiling light sheet microscopy techniques.

Descending tracts carry motor signals from the brain to spinal cord. However, few previous studies show the full view of the long tracts from a 3D perspective. In this study, we have followed five less well-known tracts that project from midbrain, hindbrain, and cerebellum to the mouse spinal cord, using the tissue clearing method in combination with tiling light sheet microscopy. By tracing axons in spinal cord, we found several notable features: among the five tracts the collateral "sister" branches occurred only in the axons originating from the cerebellospinal tracts; the axons from the sp
