Replication and extension of the military family stress model: The after deployment adaptive parenting tools ADAPT4U study.

The military family stress (MFS) model conceptualizes that wartime deployments and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are associated with couple, parenting, and child adjustment difficulties. The aim of this study was to replicate and extend the military family stress model by examining the associations among deployment length, PTSD symptoms, marital functioning, parenting practices, and child adjustment in a replication sample of both National Guard and Reserve (NG/R) as well as active-duty service member families. The MFS model is extended to test whether these relationships vary

Ten Years of Outcomes in a National Mental Health Network for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families.

Military-affiliated adults including veterans, active-duty service members, and their families experience elevated rates of mental health conditions such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Addressing these needs requires accessible, high-quality, and evidence-based care delivered at scale. Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a national network of community-based military family clinics, was established in 2015 to provide rapid access to mental healthcare, emphasizing evidence-based psychotherapies, measurement-based care, and standardized clinical and operational practices. This retrospective study e

On 2 August 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait and held hostage all its inhabitants. Amongst those forced to stay were 71 British servicemen and their families who were held hostage for up to four and a half months. This study investigated the mental health status of this group of individuals at 6 and 18 months after the final hostage was released. Participants completed the Impact of Event Scale and the 28-item version of the General Health Questionnaire at both 6 and 18 months. In addition they completed a questionnaire regarding background factors, the dimensions of the trauma and the effects of thei

Assessing Personal and Family Strengths Among Active-Duty Military Members to Predict Self-Directed Harm and Interpersonal Violence.

United States active-duty military members face elevated risk of self-directed harm and interpersonal violence. Prevention resources for family maltreatment in the military context have received notable investments in recent years, culminating in the development of the Personal and Family Strengths Inventory (PFSI), a strengths-based prevention and treatment-planning tool aimed at inventorying key dimensions of individuals' formal supports, informal supports, family environment, individual fitness, and personal resilience. Research has showcased the utility of the holistic assessment of factor

Performance of DSM-5 Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder Criteria in a Community Sample of Bereaved Military Family Members.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to examine the accuracy of DSM-5 proposed criteria for persistent complex bereavement disorder in identifying putative cases of clinically impairing grief and in excluding nonclinical cases. Performance of criteria sets for prolonged grief disorder and complicated grief were similarly assessed. METHOD: Participants were family members of U.S. military service members who died of any cause since September 11, 2001 (N=1,732). Putative clinical and nonclinical samples were derived from this community sample using cutoff scores from the Inventory of Comp

A Mixed-Methods Study to Evaluate Family Planning Desires and Barriers to Building Families Among Gay, Bisexual, and Lesbian Cisgender Military Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Barriers to seeking infertility care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, and asexual (LGBTIQA+) individuals are well documented in the literature. However, little is known about military LGBTIQA+ service members seeking infertility care within the Military Health System. Approximately 6.1% of active duty U.S. service members across all branches identify as LGBTIQA+, which underscores the need for a deeper understanding of the needs of this community to support and retain service members. We therefore sought to describe the lived experiences of le

Uniformed families, unequal outcomes?: A multicenter retrospective study of non-accidental trauma in military and civilian children.

BACKGROUND: Non-accidental trauma (NAT) or child physical abuse (CPA) is associated with many social factors, including low socioeconomic status, mental health difficulties, and substance use. Military families are uniquely vulnerable to abuse, particularly during periods of increased stress. NAT outcome data in military-dependent children are limited to a single-center study showing longer length of stay (LOS), higher mortality, and more complications. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients (≤18 years) with NAT at eight US children's hospitals from 2018 to 2023, diagnosed

Feasibility, acceptability, and short-term impact of a brief sexually transmitted infection intervention targeting U.S. Military personnel and family members.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 10 years, incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has increased to record numbers in the United States, with the most significant increases observed among adolescents and young adults. The US military, where the majority of active duty personnel are 18-30 years old, has seen similar increases. However, the US military does not yet have a standardized, service-wide program for STI education and prevention. METHODS: The KISS intervention (Knocking out Infections through Safer-sex and Screening) was adapted from an evidence-based intervention endorsed by the

Family planning desires and barriers to fertility preservation for transgender and gender-diverse military service members in the United States.

PURPOSE: Fertility preservation is recommended prior to initiation of gender-affirming hormone therapy. However, barriers have been described in providing appropriate counseling and pursuing fertility preservation. We hypothesized transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people serving in the United States military would face their own unique barriers to fertility preservation given the historic undulating policies with respect to their ability to openly serve. We aimed to evaluate barriers that transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals face when pursuing fertility preservation in the Unite

The Military Child & Family Collaboratory: A Content Analysis of Collective Impact Actions for Youth Mental Health, Emotional, Development, and Behavioral Needs.

INTRODUCTION: The United States is experiencing a youth mental health crisis, which is exacerbated for military-connected children because of frequent relocations and parental deployments. Despite universal healthcare, military-connected children report more mental health and special healthcare needs than their civilian peers, highlighting a gap that impacts family well-being and military readiness. To address this challenge, over 70 organizations formed the Military Child and Family Collaboratory (MCFC), a research Collaboratory operating within a collective impact framework. The MCFC develop

Parental Relationship Quality and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: Investigating The Role of Parental Warmth and Hostility in United States Military Families.

Military life is characterized by regular transitions; thus, parents are positioned to serve as stable protective factors for adolescents. We investigated a theory-informed model that assessed direct and indirect relationships between parental relationship quality, parental behaviors, and adolescent depressive symptomatology using cross-sectional data of military families in the United States (US). Participant families (N = 229), recruited via convenience sampling to take a computer-based survey, included an active duty father, his spouse, and an adolescent. Mother's couple relationship qualit

Who Benefits More in Group-Based and Individual Telehealth Parenting Programs: Moderators and Distal Child Outcomes among Military Families.

Telehealth has emerged as a feasible means for delivering evidence-based parenting interventions, but studies of which families benefit from individual telehealth versus traditional in-person groups, as well as long-term effects for children, are lacking. In this comparative effectiveness trial, 166 military families were randomized to the individual telehealth or in-person group-based ADAPT intervention. Moderated mediation models tested whether baseline parent and child factors moderated the impact of delivery format on parenting at a one-year follow-up and whether parenting changes mediated
