[Milk donation and pandemic: human milk as a global good.].

The human milk donation has been an undervalued and very biasedly examined subject until relatively recently, in comparison with other types of human donation (organs, tissues, fluids), not being recognized its dimension of bodily altruistic and philanthropic act in the same way as other (mildly) analogous realities, as well as in its approach from the perspective of feminist and gender studies. On the other hand, although the COVID-19 pandemic and the various lockdown processes have had an onerous impact on human breastfeeding in general, we find data on the global increase in breastfeeding d

Camel milk: an alternative for cow's milk allergy in children.

Treatment of cow's milk allergy (CMA) in children includes avoidance of cow's milk and providing a milk substitute. This study was designed to determine whether CMA children could safely consume camel's milk as an alternative, and skin-prick test (SPT) to camel's milk could be a reliable tool in selecting them. Between April 2007 and February 2010, children with confirmed CMA seen at the Allergy-Immunology Clinic, Hamad Medical Corp., were enrolled into this prospective cohort study. Subjects had a detailed history and medical examination, complete blood count with differential count, total se

Fermented milks and milk products as functional foods--a review.

Fermented foods and beverages possess various nutritional and therapeutic properties. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play a major role in determining the positive health effects of fermented milks and related products. The L. acidophilus and Bifidobacteria spp are known for their use in probiotic dairy foods. Cultured products sold with any claim of health benefits should meet the criteria of suggested minimum number of more than 10⁶ cfu/g at the time of consumption. Yoghurt is redefined as a probiotic carrier food. Several food powders like yoghurt powder and curd (dahi) powder are manufactured t

No more milk in milk-alkali syndrome: a case report.

This is a case of Milk-AlKali syndrome in a patient who presented with the classical triad of hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis and renal impairment. The source of calcium was over-the-counter calcium-containing antacid (Tums®). Milk-alkali syndrome was first recognized secondary to treatment of peptic ulcer disease with milk and absorbable alkali. Its incidence fell after the introduction of H2-blocker and proton pump inhibitor. However, it is one of the leading causes of hypercalcemia nowadays because of the wide availability, increased marketing and use of calcium carbonate especially in o

Carbohydrate composition of cow milk and plant-based milk alternatives.

The prevalence of lactose intolerance is one of the factors driving consumers toward plant-based milk alternatives (PBMA). This study aimed to analyze the carbohydrate profile of cows' milk (regular and lactose-free from both pasteurized and UHT milks; n = 80) and PBMA (n = 60) by HPLC. The study revealed that no significant difference was present in the energy content and total carbohydrate content between regular milk and lactose-free milk. Although milk and PBMA are entirely different food matrices, some PBMA types, as soya and coconut, may have energy contents and total carbohydrate conten

Cytokines in human milk and late-onset breast milk jaundice.

BACKGROUND: Maternal milk plays an important role in the development of late-onset breast milk jaundice (BMJ), possibly due to the unique characteristics of breast milk. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relation between cytokine concentrations in the milk of nursing mothers and BMJ. METHODS: Breast milk samples were collected from breast-feeding mothers of healthy full-term neonates, 40 with BMJ and 40 without jaundice. Milk samples were taken between the second and the fourth postpartum week. The concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1 β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and tumor

Effects of milking stall dimensions on behavior of dairy cows during milking in different milking parlor types.

Dairy cow body size has increased over time because of breeding selection for higher milk yield, but milking stall dimensions have never been adjusted and are based on the practical experience of milking-machine manufacturers and advisory institutions. Narrow, limited milking stall dimensions might lead to behavioral changes during milking due to lack of comfort. The aim of this study was to examine the current space allowance in milking stalls on dairy farms and assess the effect of space allowance on cow behavior during milking. On 15 Swiss dairy farms, we measured clear milking stall dimens

Effect of changes in milking routine on milking related behaviour and milk removal in Tunisian dairy dromedary camels.

We studied the effects of changes in the milking routine (lack or presence of 30-s prestimulation, 0 or 1, 2 or 4-min delay between preparation and cluster attachment) and environmental perturbation (unusual loud sounds capable of frightening animals just after stall entry or during the course of milking) on milk removal and milking-related behaviour in dairy dromedary camels. A 30-s prestimulation decreased incidence of bimodal milk flow curves and increased occurrence of the best milk ejection patterns with higher milk flow but had limited effect on milk production in our well-trained animal

A Proteomic Atlas of Human Milk: Uncovering Milk Functional Components.

Human milk is a complex and highly organized biofluid whose molecular composition underpins neonatal nutrition, immune protection, and developmental regulation. Despite extensive proteomic profiling, its global organizational structure remains fragmented and poorly integrated. Here, we performed a large-scale meta-analysis of mass spectrometry-based proteomics datasets to construct a unified, queryable human milk proteome atlas for system-level interpretation. By harmonizing datasets through standardized preprocessing and normalization, we defined a core human milk proteome comprising the most

Investigations of milk quality from teats with milk flow disorders.

The objective of this study was to investigate the quality of milk from teats with milk flow disorders. Somatic cell count, pathogens, and signs of mastitis (>100,000 cells/ml and pathogens detected) were determined in the milk from all teats of the udder before treatment of the affected teat, as well as 1 and 6 mo later. Teats with milk flow disorders were compared to all of the other teats from the same udder. Before treatment, the SCC from affected teats was 4.3 million higher, the odds of detecting pathogens 6 times higher, and the odds of mastitis 11 times higher than in control teats (wh

Milk consumption, symptom response, and lactose digestion in milk intolerance.

The experience of adverse gastrointestinal symptoms (gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea) after the oral ingestion of 360 mL whole milk was investigated in 25 adults who claimed to be milk intolerant. The level of customary milk consumption by all subjects was low compared with that of 13 control subjects who denied a history of milk intolerance. After drinking the milk, which was accompanied by a hydrogen breath test, most of the subjects experienced some of their accustomed intestinal discomfort and the degree of intolerance was similar for the nine (36%) who proved to be true lactose-maldiges

Hormonal Substances in Human Milk, Cow's Milk and Dairy Products.

Hormone-like substances are normal constituents of cow's and human milk. Progesterone has been quantified in cow's milk and dairy products with butter containing a high value of 300 ng/g. Estrogenic substances have been detected in cow's and human milk but literature values are sparse or tend to vary widely possibly because quanitative methods available lacked specificity and sensitivity. Pregnanediol is rather unique to human milk and its presence in elevated levels has been associated with prolonged neonatal jaundice of nursing infants. The concentration of this steroid in affected mother's

The minerals of milk.

The salt of milk constitutes a small part of milk (8-9 g.L(-1)); this fraction contains calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium for the main cations and inorganic phosphate, citrate and chloride for the main anions. In milk, these ions are more or less associated between themselves and with proteins. Depending on the type of ion, they are diffusible (cases of sodium, potassium and chloride) or partially associated with casein molecules (cases of calcium, magnesium, phosphate and citrate), to form large colloidal particles called casein micelles. Today, our knowledge and understanding concerni

Changes in fatty acid profiles of transition milk of Czech Fleckvieh cows milked in automatic milking system.

Transition milk is an important part of a newborn calf's nutrition, and its positive effects on the calf's health could be attributed, among others, to its fatty acid (FA) profile. Transition milk can be collected via automated milking systems (AMS). This study aimed to evaluate changes in FA profile of transition milk in dependence on parity, the number of milkings, and the between-milking interval when using AMS for its collection. The on-farm observation was conducted on 18 Czech Fleckvieh cows in a confined system that were in their first (7 cows), second (5 cows), or third or higher parit

The effect of homogenization of whole milk, skim milk and milk fat on nisin activity against Listeria innocua.

Whole milk, skim milk and an emulsion of milk fat in water, inoculated with approx. 10(5) cfu/ml of Listeria innocua, were treated at 30 degrees C with 100 IU/ml of nisin, homogenization at 200 bar or both procedures. Nisin activity and survival of L. innocua after treatments were determined. Recovery of nisin activity from non-homogenized whole milk treated with 100 IU/ml of nisin was complete, whereas a loss of 18 to 28% of activity was detected in non-homogenized fat-in-water emulsion. Loss in nisin activity due to homogenization represented up to 64% in whole milk and 62% in fat-in-water e
