Effect of Different Processing Methods on the Millet Polyphenols and Their Anti-diabetic Potential.

Interest in polyphenols has grown due to their beneficial effect on diabetes attenuation. Millets are ancient crops that are rich in polyphenols and used for both food and feed. They are grown worldwide and are adapted to production under dry, hot conditions. The polyphenols found in millets have anti-diabetic properties. However, millet is usually consumed after being processed by heating, germination, fermentation, and other processing methods, which may alter polyphenol content and thus affect their anti-diabetic potential. This mini-review profiles the effects of different processing metho

False teeth "Ebiino" and Millet disease "Oburo" in Bushenyi district of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: "False teeth" (Ebiino) and "Millet disease" (Oburo, Tea-tea) have been reported in Uganda and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. These two perceived diseases are commonly reported in children under-five years of age. Anecdotal and published evidence suggests that these conditions are associated with moderate to severe childhood diseases such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea and that most health seeking behaviour for the conditions is from traditional healers. OBJECTIVES: To estimate how common the 2 perceived diseases (false teeth and millet disease) are and describe health

Extraction, purification and characterization of lipoxygenase from foxtail millet (Setaria italica).

This study established a method for extracting and purifying foxtail millet lipoxygenase (LOX) by combining ammonium sulfate precipitation and ion exchange chromatography, and investigated its enzymatic properties. The purified LOX showed high specific activity (448.82 ± 13.26 U/mg) and a molecular weight of 96.6 kDa. It achieved maximum catalytic activity at 30 °C and pH 7.0, with good stability within the pH range of 5.0-6.0. Circular dichroism and ultraviolet spectral analyses demonstrated that the heat-induced reduction in LOX enzymatic activity derived from alterations in the protein's sp

A case report of multiple histological subtypes ameloblastoma with millet-like calcification.

Interstitial calcification in Ameloblastoma (AM) with multiple histological subtypes is extremely rare. Notably, no reports exist regarding this feature in unicystic AM. Here, we report a case of a 20-year-old female who presented with a one-month history of chewing pain in the left mandibular posterior region. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed impacted second and third molars in the left mandible. A well-defined cystic lesion surrounded the crowns of these molars, accompanied by partial resorption of the bone plate and areas of bone destruction on the lingual aspect. Multiple mill

Enhanced drought tolerance of foxtail millet seedlings by sulfur dioxide fumigation.

Recently, sulfur dioxide (SO2) has been considered to be a beneficial bio-regulator in animals. However, the positive roles of SO2 in plant adaptation to drought stress are still unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological and molecular changes that are induced by SO2 fumigation to improve the drought tolerance of foxtail millet seedlings. The relative water content in the leaves of drought-stressed seedlings was significantly improved by pre-exposure to 30 mg/m3 SO2. These responses might be related to decreased stomatal apertures and a reduced leaf transpiration rate, which wer

Comparative physiological and transcriptomic analyses of differential mesotrione tolerance in foxtail millet seedlings.

Foxtail millet is an important drought-tolerant crop, yet its production is threatened by weed competition due to limited herbicide options. The 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicide mesotrione shows promise but causes differential responses among varieties. This study investigated the physiological and transcriptomic responses underlying differential mesotrione tolerance in two foxtail millet cultivars, Jingu 21 (JG21, sensitive) and Zhangzagu 10 (ZZG10, tolerant). Physiological analyses revealed that ZZG10 maintained higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn), photosystem

Millet seed oil activates β-catenin signaling and promotes hair growth.

Alopecia, regardless of gender, exacerbates psychological stress in those affected. The rising prevalence of alopecia has fueled a research interest in preventing hair loss. This study investigates the potential of millet seed oil (MSO) in promoting the proliferation of hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC) and stimulating hair growth in animals with testosterone-dependent hair growth inhibition as part of a study on dietary treatments to improve hair growth. MSO-treated HFDPC significantly increased cell proliferation and phosphorylation of AKT, S6K1, and GSK3β proteins. This induces β-c

Millet shell polyphenols ameliorate atherosclerosis development by suppressing foam cell formation.

Polyphenols are bioactive compounds that occur naturally in plants, and they are widely used for disease prevention and health maintenance. In present study, the effects of millet shell polyphenols (MSPs) in thwarting atherosclerosis were explored. The results found that MSPs effectively inhibited the ability of macrophages to phagocytose lipids, and reduced the secretion of inflammatory factors IL-1β and TNF-α by obstructing the expression of STAT3 and NF-κB in macrophages. Eventually, MSPs hindered the formation of macrophage-derived foam cells. On the other hand, MSPs promoted the transform

A mini foxtail millet with an Arabidopsis-like life cycle as a C4 model system.

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is an important crop species and an emerging model plant for C4 grasses. However, functional genomics research on foxtail millet is challenging because of its long generation time, relatively large stature and recalcitrance to genetic transformation. Here we report the development of xiaomi, a rapid-cycling mini foxtail millet mutant as a C4 model system. Five to six generations of xiaomi can be grown in a year in growth chambers due to its short life cycle and small plant size, similar to Arabidopsis. A point mutation in the Phytochrome C (PHYC) gene was found

Millet vs rice: an evaluation of the farming/language dispersal hypothesis in the Korean context.

The 'farming/language dispersal hypothesis' was originally developed to explain the spread of the Neolithic economy and material culture into Europe. Recently, this hypothesis has been applied towards explaining the dispersal and divergence of East Asian languages. However, interpretations depend on what prehistoric cultivar is chosen by linguists as having been related with the spread of language. In understanding the appearance of the proto-Koreanic and proto-Japonic languages in Korea, millet and rice, which appeared in Korea around 3500 and 1300 BCE, respectively, have been emphasized by l

Rice bodies, millet seeds, and melon seeds in tuberculous tenosynovitis of the hand and wrist.

Tuberculosis (TB) is still endemic in many developed countries. Involvement of the hand and wrist at presentation is extremely rare, and the diagnosis is often missed. Operative findings of "rice bodies, millet seeds, or melon seeds" are highly suggestive of tuberculous tenosynovitis. Six patients with TB of the hand and wrist at various stages of disease with characteristic operative findings are reviewed. Four patients had underlying immunosuppression. One patient had previous pulmonary TB, whereas 3 patients had radiographic evidence of previously undiagnosed pulmonary TB. The interval to p

Effect of germination and autoclaving of sprouted finger millet and kidney beans on cyanide content.

Cyanide contents of locally purchased brown finger millet (Eleusine corocana L. Gaertner) and brown speckled kidney bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaries var. Rose Coco) were determined using raw, germinated and autoclaved samples. The aim was to establish the extent of cyanide content increase resulting from the germination process and the effectiveness of the autoclaving process on the reduction of cyanide levels in the samples, for safety considerations. Autoclaving was carried out at 121degree C for 20 minutes. It was found that germination increased the cyanide content by 2.11 to 2.14 fold in f
