A Unique Case of Community Acquired Proteus mirabilis Meningitis.

Proteus mirabilis, a gram-negative bacterium commonly known for causing urinary tract infections (UTI) can rarely present with central nervous system (CNS) infections. Proteus mirabilis CNS infections are usually encountered in the neonatal and infantile period and occasionally cause brain abscesses. It is an uncommon cause of adult CNS infection. We report the first case of a community-acquired Proteus mirabilis meningitis (PMM) in a patient with Proteus mirabilis UTI, urolithiasis, and bacteremia. Risk factors for gram-negative bacillary meningitis (GNBM) include extremes of age, cancer hist

Virulence determinants of uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis.

The urinary tract is among the most common sites of bacterial infection and E. coli is by far the most common infecting agent. In patients with urinary catheters in place or structural abnormalities of the urinary tract, Proteus mirabilis is also a frequent isolate. To study virulence of these bacterial species, we have isolated the genes that encode putative virulence factors, constructed specific mutations within these genes, introduced the mutation back into the wild type strain by allelic exchange, and analyzed these mutants for virulence in appropriate in vitro and in vivo models. Into the understanding the multicellular lifestyle of Proteus mirabilis on solid surfaces.

Indwelling urinary catheterization can lead to the development of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), an important type of nosocomial infection, as well as other medical issues among institutionalized adults. Recently, Proteus mirabilis was highlighted as the important cause of CAUTIs. The pathogenicity of P. mirabilis is dependent on two multicellular types of surface colonization: the adherence and swarming motility. Adhesion, mostly mediated by fimbrial and nonfimbrial adhesins, is important for the initiation of biofilm formation. Moreover, the production of urease frequ

An electrified catheter to resist encrustation by Proteus mirabilis biofilm.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effect of iontophoresis produced by passing an electric current through silver electrodes attached to catheters on catheter encrustation by crystalline Proteus mirabilis biofilm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four glass bladder models were catheterized with 16Fr silicone catheters, of which 3 had 0.25 mm silver wires running through and beside the lumen. Two wired catheters had the silver wires connected to a 9 V direct current source supplying a steady current of 150 microA via a self-regulating circuit. Artificial urine, which had been inoculated with a clinical strain

Polymer surface properties and their effect on the adhesion of Proteus mirabilis.

A problem encountered in patients undergoing long-term catheterization of the urinary tract is that of encrustation and blockage of the catheter by crystalline bacterial biofilms. This is principally caused by the action of the urease-producing pathogen Proteus mirabilis. A major aim of this work is to develop materials resistant to encrustation. Here, the effects of polymer surface properties on the adhesion of P. mirabilis are examined. Spin-coated polymer films were characterized through contact angle measurements to give the Lifschitz-van der Waals, electron acceptor and electron donor ter

Observations on the adherence of Proteus mirabilis onto polymer surfaces.

AIMS: Infection of the catheterized urinary tract with Proteus mirabilis causes blockage of the catheter by crystalline bacterial biofilms. The aim of this work is to identify a surface-coating for catheters that is not vulnerable to colonization by Pr. mirabilis. METHODS AND RESULTS: A parallel-plate flow-cell and phase contrast microscopy were used to follow bacterial adhesion onto polymer films. Experiments with a urease-negative mutant of Pr. mirabilis suspended in buffer or urine, identified agarose as a polymer on which biofilm did not form. In tests with wild-type urease-producing cell

A new photosensitive pigment of the euryhaline teleost, Gillichthys mirabilis.

Retinal extracts have been prepared from dark-adapted mudsuckers by treatment of retinal tissue or of isolated outer segments of the visual cells with digitonin solution. The extracts were examined spectrophotometrically and found to absorb light maximally between the wave lengths of 488 and 510 mmicro, depending on the proportion of yellow impurities and light-sensitive pigment present. This photosensitive pigment was shown to be homogeneous by partial bleaching of the extracts with monochromatic light of various wave lengths from 390 to 660 mmicro. The mudsucker pigment was specifically demo

Genomic insights into a Proteus mirabilis strain inducing avian cellulitis.

Proteus mirabilis, a microorganism distributed in soil, water, and animals, is clinically known for causing urinary tract infections in humans. However, recent studies have linked it to skin infections in broiler chickens, termed avian cellulitis, which poses a threat to animal welfare. While Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is the primary cause of avian cellulitis, few cases of P. mirabilis involvement are reported, raising questions about the factors facilitating such occurrences. This study employed a pan-genomic approach to investigate whether unique genes exist in P. mirabilis str

Pathogenesis of Proteus mirabilis in Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections.

Proteus mirabilis (PM) is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium and widely exists in the natural environment, and it is most noted for its swarming motility and urease activity. PM is the main pathogen causing complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Clinically, PM can form a crystalline biofilm on the outer surface and inner cavity of the urethral indwelling catheter owing to its ureolytic biomineralization. This leads to catheter encrustation and blockage and, in most cases, is accompanied by urine retention and ascending UTI, causi

Multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis bloodstream infections: risk factors and outcomes.

Our aims were to identify (i) risk factors associated with the acquisition of multidrug-resistant (MDR, to 3 or more classes of antimicrobials) Proteus mirabilis isolates responsible for bloodstream infections (BSIs) and (ii) the impact on mortality of such infections. Risk factors for acquiring MDR P. mirabilis BSIs were investigated in a case-case-control study; those associated with mortality were assessed by comparing survivors and nonsurvivors in a cohort study. The population consisted of 99 adult inpatients with P. mirabilis BSIs identified by our laboratory over an 11-year period (1999

Preventing catheter-related urinary tract infection: focus on Proteus mirabilis.

Urinary tract infectious caused by Proteus are uncommon, and account for only 1-2% of community-acquired infectious. However, it is important that staff are able to recognise the features of a Proteus infection. Proteus infections, if unrecognised, can become established and cause major health problems. Proteus is more common in people who have or have had a urinary catheter. Minimizing the incidence and duration of urinary catheterization is an important part of preventing infection. Community staff who are alert to the possibility of this infection can make a huge difference to their patient

Proteus mirabilis strains of diverse type have IgA protease activity.

A strain of Proteus mirabilis associated with chronic urinary tract infection was found to produce an EDTA-sensitive IgA protease that cleaved the IgA heavy chain into two fragments at sites different from those attacked by other microbial IgA1 proteases. Another 14 P. mirabilis strains of diverse type and from various clinical conditions also produced a similar IgA protease. This enzyme may be a virulence determinant of P. mirabilis.

Modulation of crystalline Proteus mirabilis biofilm development on urinary catheters.

The crystalline biofilms formed by Proteus mirabilis can seriously complicate the care of patients undergoing long-term bladder catheterization. The generation of alkaline urine by the bacterial urease causes calcium and magnesium phosphates to precipitate from urine and accumulate in the catheter biofilm, blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. The pH at which these salts crystallize from a urine sample, the nucleation pH (pH(n)), can be elevated by diluting the urine and by increasing its citrate content. The aim of this study was to examine whether manipulation of pH(n) in these ways m

Which indwelling urethral catheters resist encrustation by Proteus mirabilis biofilms?

OBJECTIVE: To test the resistance of currently available types of indwelling urethral catheters to blockage by encrustation with mineralized Proteus mirabilis biofilms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Encrustation was studied in a simple laboratory model of the catheterized bladder. Artificial urine was supplied to the bladder chamber at 0.5 mL/min. The bladder urine was inoculated with a clinical strain of P. mirabilis that had been isolated from an encrusted catheter. The models were operated until the catheters blocked and atomic absorption spectrometry was used to assess the amounts of calcium and

Ammonia encephalopathy secondary to urinary tract infection with Proteus mirabilis.

Hyperammonemia with coma, tachypnea, and respiratory alkalosis developed in a 3-year-old boy with prune"-belly syndrome during a urinary tract infection with Proteus mirabilis. Hyperammonemia is thought to have resulted from the production within the massively dilated urinary tract of excessive amounts of ammonia due to bacterial urease, and its subsequent reabsorption into the systemic circulation. The patient rapidly improved following parenteral antibiotic therapy and continuous catheter drainage of the urinary tract.
