[Medical statistics in the late Qing dynasty].

Chinese medical statistics basically went through three stages in the Late Qing Dynasty. The early stage was individual behavior of missionary doctors. In the early 16(th) century, western countries began to collect materials about medicine and public health in China. After the Opium War in 1840, more missionaries came to China and more doctors engaged in medical information collection and statistics. In 1860s, the western countries stole the customs power control from the Qing's government and the systematization process of statistics began. The process, content, method and time of statistics

Characteristics of schistosomiasis in travelers reported to the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network 1997-2008.

Among ill returned travelers to Schistosoma-endemic areas reported to the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network over a decade 410 schistosomiasis diagnoses were identified: 102 Schistosoma mansoni, 88 S. haematobium, 7 S. japonicum, and 213 Schistosoma unknown human species. A total of 83% were acquired in Africa. Unlike previous large case series, individuals born in endemic areas were excluded. Controlling for age and sex, those traveling for missionary or volunteer work, or as expatriates were more likely to be diagnosed with schistosomiasis. Sixty-three percent of those with schistosomiasis pre

[Introduction of the modern western medicine in late Choson period (I)].

Generally it has been thought that the modern western medicine was introduced into Korea by Japanese physicians and Western missionaries. But some recent studies have revealed that in the late Choson period, Koreans and Korean government played the essential roles in the introduction of it. This paper summarized and discussed the self-reliant activities of Koreans at the time, mainly in introducing the smallpox vaccination method and establishing Jejoong-Won Hospital, the first modern hospital in Korea.

Victorian naturalists in China: science and informal empire.

This paper discusses the research of British naturalists in China during the period between the Opium War and the collapse of the Qing dynasty (1839-1911). China was defeated in the Opium War and forced to open treaty ports for trade with the Westerners. The foreign powers, particularly Britain, imposed upon the Qing government treaties, concession leases, favourable trade conditions, legal privileges and so on to reduce its political autonomy. In the shadow of the informal empire, not only did the British have more freedom to travel in China, first at the treaty ports and later in the interio

Psychiatric wards of Soochow Elizabeth Blake Hospital (1898-1937): a missing piece in the history of modern Chinese psychiatry.

The history of modern psychiatry in China began at the end of the nineteenth century, as a result of the work of missionaries. Soochow was one of the first cities to establish a hospital for the treatment of mental patients, but historians knew little about it. It provided a valuable service from 1898 to 1937. In the 1930s, there were 200 beds in the psychiatry and neurology section, making it the most influential psychiatric hospital in East China. After Soochow was occupied by the Japanese army in 1937, the hospital was destroyed and shut down.

Medical illustration in China: Lam Qua and his Western-style paintings.

Lam Qua, a Chinese artist who painted in the Western style, was hired by American ophthalmologist and missionary Peter Parker to paint Parker's Chinese patients. Most of Lam Qua's paintings depict patients with rather large tumors located in various areas across the body; there are a few that are also of dermatologic interest. This contribution explores Lam Qua's paintings that depict a cutaneous horn, gangrenous necrosis, and an ulcerating tumor.

Art and Pediatric Orthopaedics Lam Qua: Scarred and Deformed.

Lam Qua, a Chinese artist, was commissioned by Dr Peter Parker, a medical missionary, to paint portraits of patients attending the Canton Hospital with tumors and deformities. Among numerous such portraits painted by Lam Qua, one is of an adolescent boy with severe deformities of the right lower limb associated with extensive scarring. The possible causes of such scarring are discussed. The fact that appropriate measures adopted while treating major wounds of the limbs can prevent deformities from developing is emphasized.

A case of tungiasis.

Tunga penetrans is a burrowing flea that is prevalent in Central and South America, the Caribbean, tropical Africa, India, and Pakistan, and rarely is imported to the United States. Tungiasis results from the cutaneous infestation of humans by the gravid female flea, T. penetrans. We report a case of tungiasis in a female who had been on a missionary expedition along the Brazilian Amazon River. The clinical presentation, life cycle, differential diagnosis, military and historical aspects, and treatment are discussed.

Je Jung Won was the first modern-style Government hospital built by the Korean King Ko-Jong in April 1885, and it was the medical missionary Horace Newton Allen(1858~1932) who made one of the greatest contributions to the establishment of the hospital. Allen was an American missionary. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a degree in theology in 1881, and completed one-yearcourse at Miami Medical College. In Korea and America he worked as a physician, a missionary, an American diplomatic minister to Korea and a Korean minister's secretary to America. While acting as a mediator betwe

The Cognitive Evolution from "Plague" to "Infectious Disease".

According to the Grand Chinese Dictionary, plague is defined to be an acute infectious disease. The Chinese term "infectious disease" is not what it is commonly thought originated from Japanese. The medical nomenclature shift from the traditional "plague" to the modern "infectious disease" is completed by the medical missionaries, Chinese scholars, and the national authority, each utilising different strategies. It is a history of acceptance concerning the concept of "infectious disease" from academia to national level. The conscious use of infectious disease-related thought and terminology by

International public health in third world country medical missions: when small legs walk, we all stand a little taller.

Medical and surgical missions in Third World countries are mentally, physically, and financially demanding; however, there are many foot and ankle surgeons volunteering their time because it provides high levels of personal and emotional satisfaction. After many years in the missionary field, we would like to share a compilation study of our long-term experience and outcomes from our international medical and surgical pediatric mission trips to Latin American countries. We hope to instill in others the same passion for this work by sharing our portion of contribution in this vast world of inte

[Probing the origin of plastic surgery and its early development in China].

The modern plastic surgery, accompanied with western medical science, was transmitted to our country by missionary since the opium war (1840). By looking into the medical journal, literature materials published before 1949, it may be confirmed that the department of plastic surgery first appeared in 1934 and was established by Dr. Ni Bao - Chun. At the same time, this author found 27 papers totally belong to plastic surgery in that historical stage and the contents of these papers would basically reflected the scientific level during that period. It might be considered that by then the plastic

A Study on the Operation and Institutional Character of the Chemulpo Women's Dispensary.

This study examines the establishment and operation of the Chemulpo Women's Dispensary to clarify the patterns and historical character of women's medical work in Incheon during the Japanese colonial period. Previous studies have made only fragmentary references to the fact that the dispensary was founded in 1921 by Rosetta S. Hall, without sufficiently addressing its practical operations or its relationship with the local community. The findings reveal that the Chemulpo Women's Dispensary functioned not merely as an outcome of missionary expansion, but as a regional medical hub that filled a

Theobald palm and his remarkable observation: how the sunshine vitamin came to be recognized.

The seminal discovery that sunlight was important in the prevention of nutritional rickets was made in 1890 by Theobald A. Palm, a medical missionary who contrasted the prevalence of rickets in northern European urban areas with similar areas in Japan and other tropical countries. He surmised that exposure to sunlight prevented rickets. Over the next 40 years his observation led to an understanding of ultraviolet irradiation and its role in vitamin D synthesis. This opened a new era of appreciation for the curative powers of the sun and "the sunshine vitamin". While Palm's observations were in

[Filariasis in patients returned from the tropics. Studies on 64 cases].

A discussion is presented on the epidemiological and clinical aspects of filariasis in persons returning from tropical countries. In our population filariasis is mainly imported from central and western Africa, especially Cameroon. Missionaries and voluntary workers spending periods of years in the tropics are particularly exposed. About 50% of the patients are normal on clinical examination and 40% do not even evidence symptoms due to the low parasite density. Therefore, demonstration of the parasite, which is the diagnostic aim, is often very difficult and requires special techniques. Whenev
