Indigenous Cases of Leprosy (Hansen's Disease) in Southern Mississippi.

Hansen's disease or leprosy is a chronic infection of the skin and peripheral nerves caused by Mycobacterium leprae. In the U.S., leprosy is mainly reported in immigrants, but indigenous leprosy cases have been also reported in this country, especially in semitropical southern states (i.e., Texas, Louisiana). The objective of this series of cases is to describe indigenous leprosy cases reported in southern Mississippi (MS) during the period 2012-2014. Information was collected from medical records at Hattiesburg Clinic and the MS Department of Health. Four cases were reported during the period

Fetal gastroschisis: epidemiological characteristics and pregnancy outcomes in Mississippi.

We describe the epidemiological characteristics and identify maternal-fetal outcomes in pregnancies complicated by gastroschisis. We retrospectively reviewed 115 cases of gastroschisis at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The incidence of gastroschisis trended upward between 2000 and 2008. Significant proportions of mothers were nonobese, nulliparous, teenagers, smokers, and nonconsumers of alcohol. Infants delivered at > 36 weeks or without sepsis had shorter hospital stay (HS) and interval to full enteral feeding (FEF). The rates of low birth weight (LBW), fetal growth restrictio

St. Louis encephalitis: clinical and epidemiologic aspects, Mississippi, 1974.

During July, August, and September 1974, 23 confirmed or presumptive cases of St. Louis encephalitis occurred in Mississippi. Attack rates were highest in the northwest corner of the state and among persons over 70 years of age. Rural and urban residents had similar attack rates. Nine persons have not resumed their pre-illness level of activity because of residual neurologic impairment six months after their illness. Additional cases of St. Louis encephalitis are expected in the next few years.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Diabetes Risk in Mississippi Adults.

Despite Mississippi's high diabetes prevalence and the growing literature finding significant associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and diabetes, no research has examined the relationship between ACEs and diabetes risk in Mississippi adults. This study utilized data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to determine if such a relationship existed. Data for Mississippi respondents were weighted to account for nonresponse bias and non-coverage errors. Each respondent's total ACE exposure score was calculated based on the number of ACE categories exp

Locally Acquired Melioidosis Linked to Environment - Mississippi, 2020-2023.

Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is a rare but potentially fatal bacterial disease endemic to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is typically acquired through contact with contaminated soil or fresh water. Before this investigation, B. pseudomallei was not known to have been isolated from the environment in the continental United States. Here, we report on three patients living in the same Mississippi Gulf Coast county who presented with melioidosis within a 3-year period. They were infected by the same Western Hemisphere B. pseudomallei strain that was discovered

Familial clustering of end-stage renal disease in Mississippi.

BACKGROUND: Familial clustering of ESRD has been noted in the families of 20-40% of African-Americans (AA) with ESRD but has been observed much less often in Caucasians (Cau). Because our impression indicated a higher frequency in Caucasians than reported in several recent studies we conducted a 2-year prospective evaluation of patients referred for renal transplantation to assess the frequency of familial clustering of ESRD in both Caucasians and African-Americans. METHODS: Detailed family histories were obtained in 350 ESRD patients referred for renal transplantation, 335 of whom could prov

Chikungunya in Mississippi: The Health Department Response to Imported Cases.

Chikungunya (CHIK), a newly recognized mosquito-borne disease in the Western Hemisphere, has resulted in well over a million cases since December 2013. Only about a dozen locally-acquired cases thus far have been reported in the U. S. (Florida), but approximately 1500 imported cases have been seen in returning travelers from the Caribbean and Central and South America. Public health officials are concerned that imported cases may lead to infection of local mosquitoes and, thus disease transmission. This paper documents 9 confirmed CHIK cases in Mississippi: 5 resulting from travel to the Domin

The civilian version of the Mississippi PTSD Scale: a psychometric evaluation.

This three-part study examined the reliability and validity of the civilian version of the Mississippi Scale for Combat-Related PTSD using data from the nonveteran participants in the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study. The Civilian Mississippi Scale had a raw score distribution that was roughly symmetric, with an acceptable degree of dispersion and a reasonably high internal consistency reliability coefficient. Overall, however, measurement precision was weaker than that for the military version of the instrument, and confirmatory factor analytic findings differed from those found f

The impact of requirements for parental consent on minors' abortions in Mississippi.

Mississippi data for 1993 indicate that the state's new parental consent requirement had little effect on the abortion rate among minors. In a comparison of Mississippi residents who had abortions during the five months before and the six months after the law went into effect, the ratio of minors to adults who sought abortions in the state declined by 13%, a decrease offset by a 32% increase in the ratio of minors to adults who obtained abortions out of state. There was also a 28% drop in the ratio of minors to adults from other states who had abortions in Mississippi. The parental consent req

Agricultural liming is a carbon sink in the Mississippi River Basin.

Application of carbonate minerals to arable lands, known as agricultural liming, is a long-standing practice for counteracting soil acidification1-3. Although liming boosts crop yields4, it is also considered a source of agricultural carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions5. Here we show, using century-scale records of agricultural liming and anthropogenic acidity inputs for the Mississippi River Basin, that agricultural liming has acted as a net carbon sink over the past century. Records of river alkalinity fluxes suggest that approximately 90% of the ideal CO2 removal potential of agricultural lime a

Alarmingly high prevalence of obesity in haemophilia in the state of Mississippi.

The state of Mississippi has consistently been ranked as the state with most number of obese people in the United States with prevalence rates of >30%. Our aims in this study were to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adults diagnosed with haemophilia in Mississippi, and to assess whether race/ethnicity and the severity of haemophilia are important risk factors. A retrospective chart review was performed for all haemophilic patients seen at the Mississippi Hemophilia Treatment Center. Patients were classified into two major age groups: age 2-19.9 years and > or =

SEROPREVALENCE OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII INFECTION IN PIGS FROM SOUTHWESTERN MISSISSIPPI.

Toxoplasma gondii infection of swine is a potential public health concern because it can be acquired by humans through the handling and consumption of contaminated raw meat. Infections in immunocompromised individuals and fetuses are the most severe and these individuals are most likely to develop clinical toxoplasmosis. Since Mississippians consume a lot of pork, there was a significant need to know the extent to which it poses a health problem in the State. This study focused on the southwestern region of Mississippi. Between July 2003 and March 2004, blood samples were collected from slaugh

SEROPREVALENCE OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII IN GOATS FROM SOUTHWESTERN MISSISSIPPI, USA.

Parasitic infection with Toxoplasma gondii is prevalent in human and animal populations worldwide. Goat production for food and fiber has increased in popularity, and consumer demand for meat and dairy products has led to higher rates of human consumption in the United States. This trend has increased the importance of assessing the public health significance of these dietary commodities. The occurrence of T. gondii and its relevance to commercial goat production for the human food market in Mississippi has not been previously addressed. This study estimated the seroprevalence of T. gondii in

Investigating management choices for canine heartworm disease in northern Mississippi.

BACKGROUND: There are concerns that the chronic use of macrocyclic lactone preventives to kill adult heartworms ("soft-" or "slow-kill") may have contributed to the development of macrocyclic lactone resistance. This prospective analysis was designed to expand our understanding of currently employed treatment decisions, protocols utilized in a "slow-kill" methodology, and trends in heartworm prevention in a region with concerns about macrocyclic lactone resistance. We tested the hypothesis that practitioners underestimate the actual percentage of heartworm-positive dogs treated with "slow-kill

Breast health teaching in predominantly African American rural Mississippi Delta.

This study's primary focus was breast health education to rural African American women in Mississippi and training of community members. Through practice in this area, women were found to lack knowledge of breast health which is the third leading cause of death in Mississippi Black women. They were open to education: N = 130, t = -16.6, df = 126, p < .001; 1 year, N = 35; 2-3 year N = 16 and 3 trained. Data suggest knowledge increased, a small percentage continued practices and community members would become trainers. One participant was diagnosed with breast cancer, received treatment and rem
