Mistletoes are obligate hemi-parasitic angiosperms that establish complex ecological and physiological relationships with their forest hosts through specialized haustorial systems. To maintain nutrient flux, these parasites withstand more negative water potentials than their hosts, utilizing succulent leaves for strategic rehydration. Although root parasites have been extensively studied, the absorptive structures and host-parasite dynamics of the Loranthaceae family, the largest group of mistletoes, remain under-investigated. This study explores the genus Scurrula, specifically the less-studi

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women and quality of life an essential part of patients' well-being. Although the treatment with mistletoe extracts is covered by multiple cancer guidelines and reviews, it is uncertain whether mistletoe extracts can improve the quality of life in breast cancer patients. We therefore performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic.
METHODS: This systematic review included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and non-randomized studies of intervention (NRSIs) comparing the quality of life in breast cancer patients treated w

PURPOSE: One important goal of any cancer therapy is to improve or maintain quality of life. In this context, mistletoe treatment is discussed to be highly controversial. The aim of this systematic review is to give an extensive overview about the current state of evidence concerning mistletoe therapy of oncologic patients regarding quality of life and side effects of cancer treatments.
METHODS: In September and October 2017, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PsycINFO, CINAHL and "Science Citation Index Expanded" (Web of Science) were systematically se

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: Follicular non-Hodgkin lymphoma had been diagnosed in a 44-year-old man. Physical examination revealed several cervical, axillary, inguinal and infrainguinal lymphomas, maximally 1.5 x 1.2 cm in diameter. ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATIONS: Computed tomography showed multiple thoracic, abdominal and inguinal lymphoma, which--according to the Ann Arbor classification--were follicular non-Hodgkin stage IV (low grade) lymphoma with bone marrow infiltration.
TREATMENT AND COURSE: Treatment with an extract of mistletoe (Iscador) was initiated and has been continued to-date (

Loranthus micranthus Linn. (Loranthaceae) is a botanically significant hemiparasite that grows on tree branches or trunks and is used in traditional medicine. This study compares the antioxidant activity and qualitative phytochemical screening of Nigerian and South Africa Loranthus micranthus Linn. Standard techniques for phytochemical screening were deployed while thin layer chromatography (TLC) bio-autography was utilized to analyze antioxidants qualitatively. Quantitative antioxidant analysis was performed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH); hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) free-radical sca

Methanolic extract and fractions, ethylacetate (EtF) and butanol (BuF) of leaves of African mistletoe (Tapinanthus bangwensis, Engl. & K. Krause) were evaluated for their hepatoprotective potential using CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar albino rats. The activities of the marker enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bilirubin were highest in rats treated with CCl4 alone. Oral administration at a fixed dose of 400 mg/kg body weight (BW) of the extract and fractions of T. bangwensis for seven days significantly (p ≤ 0.05) dec

The immunomodulatory and antimetastatic activity of standardized aqueous mistletoe extracts from plants grown on fir trees (ME-A) and pine trees (ME-P) were evaluated in BALB/c-mice. Regular subcutaneous (s.c.) and intraperitoneal (i.p.) applications (three times per week for 14 consecutive days; 5 and 50 microg per injection and mouse) upregulated thymus weight and peripheral blood leukocyte counts in tumor bearing mice. To check the influence of ME-A and ME-P treatment on growth of experimental metastases, RAW 117 H 10 lymphosarcoma cells and L-1 sarcoma cells were intravenously inoculated i

Mistletoe lectin I (ML-I) is a major active component in plant extracts of Viscum album that is increasingly used in adjuvant cancer therapy. ML-I exerts potent immunomodulating and cytotoxic effects, although its mechanism of action is largely unknown. We show that treatment of leukemic T- and B-cell lines with ML-I induced apoptosis, which required the prior activation of proteases of the caspase family. The involvement of caspases is demonstrated because (a) a peptide caspase inhibitor almost completely prevented ML-I-induced cell death and (b) proteolytic activation of caspase-8, caspase-9

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pollinator-mediated selection is a primary driver of floral trait evolution, yet how far phylogenetic history constrains this process remains poorly understood in aerial parasitic plants, whose reproduction depends entirely on animal mutualists. We studied floral divergence in four southern South American Loranthaceae mistletoes: Tristerix aphyllus, T. corymbosus, T. verticillatus, and Desmaria mutabilis, spanning three nested divergence times (Eocene-Pleistocene): an Eocene intergeneric split, a Miocene intrageneric divergence, and a Pleistocene sister-species speciation

Quercetin-like compounds (QLCs) are secondary metabolite compounds of flavonol found in the leaf extract from the mistletoe Dendrophthoe pentandra L. Miq. This study aims to determine the ability of QLC to stimulate epithelialization in rabbit skin. The leaves were macerated with methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane solvents, and crude macerates were separated and purified into QLC using preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. The purified QLC as an analyte was prepared in serial concentrations of 4.5%, 6%, 8%, and 10% and then formulated by new methods as topical gel preparations

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mistletoe extracts (decoctions) are used traditionally in eastern Nigeria for the management of bone pain, post menopausal syndrome and diabetes amongst several other ailments. While scientific evidence supporting its folkloric use as an antidiabetic agent has been documented, the age-long practice of its use in treatment of post menopausal syndrome has not been scientifically validated. Postmenopausal osteoporosis accounts for one of the prevalent disease conditions in aging population globally. This situation is exacerbated by the lack of osteogenic therapy. I

Since Korean mistletoe (Viscum album) has been used for alleviating metabolic diseases, it may also prevent the impairment of energy, glucose, lipid, and bone metabolisms in an estrogen-deficient animal model. We determined that long-term consumption of Korean mistletoe water extract (KME) can alleviate menopausal symptoms such as hot flush, increased abdominal fat mass, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and decreased bone mineral density in ovariectomized (OVX) rats fed a high-fat diet, and explored the mechanisms of the effects. OVX rats were divided into four groups and fed high-fat diets supple

A 12-year old girl presented with general weakness and weight loss, a localised cervical lymph node enlargement and cutaneous lesions compatible with lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP). Biopsies from lymph node and skin revealed a histological diagnosis of nodal large cell ALK-1- anaplastic lymphoma (ALCL) with a synchronous CD30+ cutaneous lymphoproliferation consistent with lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP). The girl was treated with mistletoe (MT) as monotherapy. Within 1 week after initiation of MT-treatment the skin lesions and lymph node enlargement improved. Under continuing MT-therapy 30 months a
