Embryonic statistical analyses reveal 2 growth phenotypes in mouse models of Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome is associated with several comorbidities, including intellectual disability, growth restriction, and congenital heart defects. The prevalence of Down syndrome-associated comorbidities is highly variable, and intellectual disability, although fully penetrant, ranges from mild to severe. Understanding the basis of this interindividual variability might identify predictive biomarkers of in utero and postnatal outcomes that could be used as endpoints to test the efficacy of future therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to examine if an

Statistical models and time series forecasting of sulfur dioxide: a case study Tehran.

This study performed a time-series analysis, frequency distribution and prediction of SO(2) levels for five stations (Pardisan, Vila, Azadi, Gholhak and Bahman) in Tehran for the period of 2000-2005. Most sites show a quite similar characteristic with highest pollution in autumn-winter time and least pollution in spring-summer. The frequency distributions show higher peaks at two residential sites. The potential for SO(2) problems is high because of high emissions and the close geographical proximity of the major industrial and urban centers. The ACF and PACF are nonzero for several lags, indi

Is the match/mismatch model based on a statistical artefact?

In the match/mismatch model, recently formulated by Rachman and coworkers, it is stated that incorrectly predicted aversive experiences are generally followed by an immediate adjustment of the predictions concerning aversiveness of the next experience. This model can be considered to reflect a psychological process of the formation of expectations. In the present article it is argued that a simple H0 model, assuming that predictions are completely randomly generated by the subject, may account for the same effects. This H0 model is used in a stringent test of empirical data to determine if the

Mechanistic-statistical model for the expansion of ash dieback.

Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is an invasive forest fungal pathogen that induces severe dieback in European ash populations. The spread of the disease has been closely monitored in France by the forest health survey system which has made it possible to record the symptoms observed in the plots visited. We have developed a mechanistic-statistical model using a partial differential equation (PDE) that describes the spread of the disease. It is particularly adapted for pathogen population dynamics driven by propagation of airborn spores and it allows us to take into account climate (summer temperature

Statistical modeling and prediction of clinical trial recruitment.

Real-time prediction of clinical trial accrual can support logistical planning, ensuring that studies meet but do not exceed sample size targets. We describe a novel, simulation-based prediction method that is founded on a realistic model for the underlying processes of recruitment. The model reflects key features of enrollment such as the staggered initiation of new centers, heterogeneity in enrollment capacity, and declining accrual within centers. The model's first stage assumes that centers join the trial (ie, initiate accrual) according to an inhomogeneous Poisson process in discrete time

A statistical model for length of stay in a mental hospital.

The log-normal distribution is presented as a model for the probability distribution of length of hospitalization of mental patients. In general, the log-normal parameters differ for various diagnoses and treatment institutions. Data from several samples of patients are offered as evidence in support of the log-normal function. The implications of this function, such as the multiplicative effects of the factors involved in length of stay, are discussed.

Automated retinal disease classification using deep learning and AlexNet with statistical models analysis.

Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataract, and Glaucoma are major retinal diseases that require early detection to prevent irreversible vision loss. This study proposes a deep learning-based framework for the automated classification of retinal images into four categories: Normal, Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataract, and Glaucoma. The dataset was compiled from publicly available retinal imaging databases, including IDRiD and HRF. Four convolutional neural network architectures-EfficientNet-B0, EfficientNet-B7, a build-from-scratch model, and AlexNet-were evaluated using multiple performance metrics. Among the

Genomic prediction in quinoa across contrasting environments using statistical and machine learning models.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is gaining global importance for its nutritional value and adaptability; however, breeding progress remains limited. Genomic selection (GS), combined with rapid generation cycles, offers a strategy to accelerate genetic improvement. We conducted whole-genome resequencing of 610 accessions and present the first evaluation of genomic prediction in quinoa evaluated across six field trials in Australia and Pakistan for seven phenological and yield-related traits. Using ∼1.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms, we compared four models-genomic best linear unbia

Prediction of leptospirosis outbreaks by hydroclimatic covariates: a comparative study of statistical models.

Leptospirosis, the infectious disease caused by a spirochete bacteria, is a major public health problem worldwide. In Argentina, some regions have climatic and geographical characteristics that favor the habitat of bacteria of the Leptospira genus, whose survival strongly depends on climatic factors, enhanced by climate change, which increase the problems associated with people's health. In order to have a method to predict leptospirosis cases, in this paper, five time series forecasting methods are compared: two parametric (autoregressive integrated moving average and an alternative one that

Statistical models of tumour onset and growth for modern breast cancer screening cohorts.

Historically, multi-state Markov models have been used to study breast cancer incidence and mammography screening effectiveness. In recent years, more biologically motivated continuous tumour growth models have emerged as alternatives. However, a number of challenges remain for these models to make use of the wealth of information available in large mammography cohort data. In particular, methodology is needed to address random left truncation and individual, asynchronous screening. We present a comprehensive continuous random effects model for the natural history of breast cancer. It models t

Statistical face models for the rediction of soft-tissue deformations after orthognathic osteotomies.

This paper describes a technique to approximately predict the facial morphology after standardized orthognathic ostoetomies. The technique only relies on the outer facial morphology represented as a set of surface points and does not require computed tomography (CT) images as input. Surface points may either be taken from 3D surface scans or from 3D positions palpated on the face using a tracking system. The method is based on a statistical model generated from a set of pre- and postoperative 3D surface scans of patients that underwent the same standardized surgery. The model contains both the

Comparison of machine learning techniques with classical statistical models in predicting health outcomes.

Several machine learning techniques (multilayer and single layer perceptron, logistic regression, least square linear separation and support vector machines) are applied to calculate the risk of death from two biomedical data sets, one from patient care records, and another from a population survey. Each dataset contained multiple sources of information: history of related symptoms and other illnesses, physical examination findings, laboratory tests, medications (patient records dataset), health attitudes, and disabilities in activities of daily living (survey dataset). Each technique showed v

From linear models to deep learning: statistical advances in genomic selection for animal breeding.

Genomic selection (GS) has revolutionized animal breeding by accelerating genetic gain through genome-wide marker data. As genotyping technologies advance and data dimensionality grows, the statistical foundations of GS are shifting from classical linear frameworks, which assume additive genetic effects, toward advanced computational models that capture complex nonlinear relationships in genomic data. The commercialization of genotyping arrays for livestock and poultry, coupled with steadily declining sequencing costs, has led to an exponential increase in the availability of high-density geno

Statistical models to characterize colon tumor stiffness heterogeneity through representative atomic force microscopy maps.

The study of the impact of physical forces and on cells has emerged as a fertile field of investigation. Applications in oncology are especially transformative since tumor stiffness was found associated with fundamental processes such as tumorigenicity, disease progression, and resistance to therapy. We present an integrated atomic force microscopy-statistical modeling and machine learning approach in colon cancer to link clinical and phenotypical parameters with local maps of tissue stiffness. Statistical modeling found both known associations, such as with age or tumor stage, but also novel
