Ultrasound-Assisted Osmotic Pretreatment of Myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) Berries with Grape Molasses: Impacts on Convective Drying Quality.

Myrtle berries are rich in bioactive phenolics and volatile terpenes and have potential for use in functional food products. However, the combined application of grape molasses and ultrasound as a pretreatment before drying has received limited attention. This study characterized fresh 'Yakup' myrtle berries as baseline material and explored the drying behavior and measured quality attributes of berries subjected to twelve pretreatments combining grape molasses or water, ultrasound-assisted or static immersion, and treatment durations of 30, 45, or 60 min. Pretreated and untreated fruits were

Molasses-amended siderophore biofertilizer reshapes the rhizosphere microbiome, promotes growth and reduces lipid peroxidation in Ocimum basilicum L.

INTRODUCTION: Siderophore-producing bacteria and their metabolites represent promising components of next-generation biofertilizers, yet their effects on plant physiology and soil microbiome structure remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: We developed a liquid biofertilizer based on siderophores and siderophore-accompanying metabolites (SSAM) produced by Pseudomonas sp. ANT_H12B and formulated with molasses as an organic carrier. Its effects on sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) were evaluated by assessing plant growth, photosynthetic performance, lipid peroxidation, elemental composition

Adaptive Laboratory Evolution of the Non-Conventional Yeast Pichia ethanolica for Improved Molasses Utilization Reveals Multilevel Adaptive Remodeling.

Molasses is an abundant and low-cost fermentation feedstock, but its direct utilization is often constrained by its complex composition and inhibitory components. In this study, a molasses-utilizing yeast strain, M0, was isolated from tea rhizosphere soil and identified as Pichia ethanolica. M0 grew directly in untreated molasses diluted only with water, and adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) was performed under stepwise increasing molasses concentrations. After 70 transfers, the evolved population reached an OD560 of 26.41, representing a 73.1% increase relative to the parental strain, and a

Metabolic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for co-production of ethanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol from sugarcane molasses.

3-Methyl-1-butanol (3MB) is a promising renewable solvent, drop-in fuel, and precursor for various industrial products, including flavors, fragrances, and surfactants. Due to the myriad of intertwined biosynthetic pathways that share metabolic precursors, conventional metabolic engineering strategies to overproduce 3MB in yeast have typically resulted in yields that are far too low for economic viability. However, because 3MB is naturally produced by yeast, 100 million liter of 3MB are already produced annually as a byproduct of bioethanol fermentations. Despite its significant commercial valu

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production from sugar cane molasses and tap water without sterilization using novel strain, Priestia sp. YH4.

The production cost of biodegradable polymer like polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is still higher than that of petroleum-based plastics. A potential solution for reducing its production cost is using a cheap carbon source and avoiding a process of sterilization. In this study, a novel PHB-producing microbial strain, Priestia sp. YH4 was screened from the marine environment using sugarcane molasses as the carbon source without sterilization. Culture conditions, such as carbon, NaCl, temperature, pH, inoculum size, and cultivation time, were optimized for obtaining the highest PHB production by YH4 re

Characterization and Application of Non-Formaldehyde Binder Based Citric Acid, Maleic Acid, and Molasses Adhesive for Plywood Composite.

Emissions of formaldehyde from wood-based panels, such as plywood, are gaining increased attention due to their carcinogenic impact on human health and detrimental effects on the environment. Plywood, which is primarily bound with a urea-formaldehyde adhesive, releases formaldehyde during hot pressing and gradually over time. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of non-formaldehyde adhesive types on plywood performance. In addition, plywood performance was assessed by comparing Jabon wood (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq) veneer with other Indonesian wood veneers such as Mempisang (Alpho

Insight into the pilot-scale fed-batch fermentation for production of Enterococcus faecium CW3801 using molasses-based medium.

Enterococcus sp. has been used as starters in food fermentation due to their probiotic and antimicrobial properties in food biopreservation. The antimicrobial properties were mainly contributed by the bacteriocin called enterocin. Hence, the availability of a cost-effective pilot-scale cultivation conditions is a necessity for the production of probiotic bacteria. This study aims to investigate optimization of medium composition using sugarcane molasses as a carbon source using response surface methodology and the potential use of fed-batch cultivation for improvement of the cell viability of

Synergistic Orchestration of Chlorogenic Acid Analogs in Sugarcane Molasses Polyphenols for Sucrase Inhibition: Insights into a Multilevel Inhibitory Mechanism.

This study systematically explored the inhibitory mechanisms against sucrase exerted by sugarcane molasses polyphenol extract (SMPE) and its three principal chlorogenic acid analogs: neochlorogenic acid (NA), chlorogenic acid (CA), and methyl chlorogenate (MC). By integrating in vitro assays, molecular simulations, and spectroscopic analyses, we demonstrated synergistic inhibition among the components. SMPE exhibited the greatest inhibitory potency (IC50 = 3.58 ± 0.16 mg/mL), with an IC50 significantly lower than those of the individual compounds. Synergy analysis indicated marked synergistic

Production of mannitol from molasses and Jerusalem artichoke tubers at elevated temperatures using engineered Kluyveromyces marxianus through consolidated bioprocessing.

In this study, an engineered Kluyveromyces marxianus strain with enhanced mannitol biosynthesis capacity was developed, enabling efficient conversion of molasses and Jerusalem artichoke tubers into mannitol via consolidated bioprocessing. An efficient mannitol-producing strain was constructed by screening of five mannitol synthesis-related genes, with mannitol dehydrogenase (CmMDH) from Candida magnoliae identified as the most effective enzyme. Mannitol production was further enhanced by increasing the copy number of CmMDH. Among the four tested NADPH synthesis-related genes, overexpression of

Optimization and field application of an eco-friendly molasses-based dust suppressant for open-pit coal mine haul roads.

To overcome the limitations of conventional water-based dust suppression in arid, high-temperature open-pit coal mine haul roads, this study developed an innovative molasses-based dust suppressant with enhanced water retention and consolidation capabilities. The formulation leverages molasses-a sugar industry byproduct with inherent anti-evaporation properties-as its core component, supplemented with surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, SDBS), humectant (glycerol), and hygroscopic (calcium chloride, CaCl₂) additives. Employing response surface methodology (RSM), the optimal compositio

Molasses-based waste water irrigation: a friend or foe for carrot (Daucus carota L.) growth, yield and nutritional quality.

Management of molasses-based wastewater generated in yeast and sugar industries is a major environmental concern due to its high chemical oxygen demand and other recalcitrant substances. Several strategies have been used to reduce the inland discharge of wastewater but the results are not satisfactory due to high operating cost. However, reuse of molasses-based wastewater irrigation in agriculture has been a major interest nowadays to reduce the freshwater consumption. Thus, it is crucial to monitor the impacts of molasses-based waste water irrigation on growth, metabolism, yield and nutrition

Wading through Molasses: A qualitative examination of the experiences, perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge of Australian medical practitioners regarding medical billing.

BACKGROUND: Medical billing errors and fraud have been described as one of the last "great unreduced healthcare costs," with some commentators suggesting measurable average losses from this phenomenon are 7% of total health expenditure. In Australia, it has been estimated that leakage from Medicare caused by non-compliant medical billing may be 10-15% of the scheme's total cost. Despite a growing body of international research, mostly from the U.S, suggesting that rather than deliberately abusing the health financing systems they operate within, medical practitioners may be struggling to under

Engineering stress tolerance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by overexpressing PIR3 and SPI1 for efficient ethanol production from high-concentration sugarcane molasses.

The coexistence of potassium and calcium ions has been identified as a major factor limiting high-yield ethanol fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in high-concentration sugarcane molasses. To identify key genes conferring tolerance to this stress, we employed an integrated strategy combining multi-omics analysis, CRISPR-mediated gene activation/repression, and targeted overexpression. This approach pinpointed four critical genes: PIR3, SPI1, AQR1, and GUT2. Functional analysis showed that while AQR1 and GUT2 enhance ethanol biosynthesis primarily by redirecting metabolic flux, PIR3 and S
