Little is known on the diversity and public health significance of Echinococcus species in livestock in Egypt. In this study, 37 individual hydatid cysts were collected from dromedary camels (n=28), sheep (n=7) and buffalos (n=2). DNA was extracted from protoscoleces/germinal layer of individual cysts and amplified by PCR targeting nuclear (actin II) and mitochondrial (COX1 and NAD1) genes. Direct sequencing of amplicons indicated the presence of Echinococcus canadenesis (G6 genotype) in 26 of 28 camel cysts, 3 of 7 sheep cysts and the 2 buffalo derived cysts. In contrast, Echinococcus granulo

Gram-negative spirochete Leptospira spp. causes leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is still a neglected disease, even though it can cause potentially fatal infections in a variety of species including humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in pig farm captured rodents and characterize the isolated samples. Rats were captured, sampled, and euthanized in the vicinity of pig farms to obtain serum for microagglutination tests (MAT) and kidney tissues for PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA and LipL32 genes. A fraction of the 16S rRNA PCR product was sequence

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is the etiological agent of necrotic enteritis and gangrenous dermatitis; 2 diseases that cause significant economic and welfare concerns to the broiler industry. Previously, Clostridium-related diseases were managed with the use of antimicrobial growth promoters fed to broilers that improved gut health and performance. The recent shift to no antibiotics ever (NAE) production has increased the incidence of Clostridium-related diseases. The objective of this study was to identify C. perfringens prevalence and toxinotypes in NAE farms. Samples of litter,

Vector-borne parasitic diseases (VBPDs) are diseases that have a major impact on the health and productivity of livestock. VBPDs, including trypanosomosis, theileriosis, and anaplasmosis, are caused by blood parasites and Rickettsiales infections that can be transmitted by biting insects. The control and elimination of VBPDs is difficult and challenging. This study contributed to better understanding the impact of hematophagous insects on carrying pathogens to livestock by investigating the detection of Trypanosoma evansi, Theileria spp. and Anaplasma spp. in hematophagous insects collected fr

Cryptosporidium apicomplexan protozoa are ubiquitous intracellular agents affecting humans and animals. In particular, bovine cryptosporidiosis is recognized as endemic worldwide. However, epidemiological investigations remain limited in France regarding the burden of these parasites in cattle. To improve our understanding of the epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis, the main aim of this study was to determine the frequency and the genetic diversity of Cryptosporidium in adult Prim'Holstein dairy cattle farms in the north of France. Fecal specimens were collected from 1454 non-diarrheic and non-p

Infertility is a major problem in farm animals, which has a negative economic effect on farm industries. Infertility can be defined as the inability of animals to achieve a successful pregnancy. Early pregnancy is crucial to establish a successful pregnancy, and it is reported that 70-80% and 20-30% of total embryonic loss occur in cattle and pigs, respectively, during the first month of pregnancy. The advanced high-throughput proteomics techniques provide valuable tools for in-depth understanding of the implantation process in farm animals. In the present review, our goal was to compile, asse

In this study, we aimed to investigate the occurrence and molecular characteristics of fosfomycin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates from pig, chicken and pigeon farms in Guangxi Province of China. A total of 200 fosfomycin-resistant strains were obtained from food animals and their surrounding environments, with the fosA, fosA3, and fosA7.5 genes being detected in 26% (52/200), 10% (20/200), and 5% (10/200), respectively. Surprisingly, three fosA7.5-producing E. coli isolates were found to be concomitant with fosA3. Most of the fosA-like-gene-positive isolates were multidrug-resistant stra

We screened 104 snakes with respiratory disease, collected from 52 snake farms in Guangxi Province, China, for pathogens. Ferlaviruses were detected in 70 of 104 lung samples by reverse-transcription PCR; 34 of 52 of the snake farms were positive for ferlaviruses. No reovirus, adenovirus, sunshine virus, or nidovirus was detected in any of the snakes. We obtained 96 bacterial isolates from snake organs, of which the most commonly isolated species were Salmonella (18) and Proteus (16). Sequence analysis, based on 27 partial RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene (L) sequences, revealed that ferlavir

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Eppendorf, with antigenic formula 1,4,12,[27]:d:1,5, is an infrequent serovar. However, 14% (20 of 142) of the isolates recovered during June-July 2012 in chicken farms in Tunisia belonged to S. Eppendorf. These isolates were analysed for resistance and virulence profiles. None of them were susceptible to all antimicrobials tested, while 70%, 60%, 50%, 50%, 20% and 5% were resistant to sulphonamides (sul1, sul2 and sul3), streptomycin (aadA1-like), trimethoprim (dfrA1-like), nalidixic acid (GyrA Asp87 →Asn and not identified), gentamicin (not identif

Toxoplasmosis is a globally spread disease, affecting humans and many animal species, including birds. Antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii were detected in ostriches from South and North America, Africa and Asia. Except for one study from Spain, there is a lack of information about T. gondii seroprevalence in ostriches from Europe. For this reason, the aim of the study was to detect antibodies to T. gondii in farm-reared ostriches from the Czech Republic. Serum samples of 409 ostriches (Struthio camelus), collected at 9 farms were tested by Latex agglutination test. Antibodies to T. gondii were de
