Growing Safe: Acute Size Escape from Desiccation in Juvenile Crepipatella peruviana (Mollusca: Gastropoda).

Desiccation is an important limiting factor in the intertidal zone. Generally decreasing seaward, desiccation stress can also be alleviated in wet microhabitats. Juvenile snails are generally more susceptible to desiccation than adults, and, for some species, juveniles must therefore hide in microhabitats to survive emersion. The transition from hiding in safe microhabitats to being able to survive fully exposed for the duration of low tide is not well documented. In this study, we investigated the influence of size on desiccation tolerance in juveniles of the calyptraeid gastropod Crepipatell

Molluscicidal activity of some marine substances against the snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Mollusca, Planorbidae).

Freshwater snails of the genus Biomphalaria play a major role as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, the etiologic agent of schistosomiasis. While Biomphalaria spp. control by molluscicides is one of the main strategies to reduce the snail population in infected areas, there are few effective molluscicides commercially available. Natural products may be considered as potentially useful and safe molluscicides. We have evaluated the molluscicidal activity of 12 extracts from ten marine organisms on adult and embryonic stages of Biomphalaria glabrata. Only extracts of the red algae Liagora

Distribution of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Pulmonata), intermediate snail hosts of Fasciola hepatica in Venezuela.

An extensive malacological survey was carried out between 2005-2009 in order to clarify the exact number of lymnaeid species which may be intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica in Venezuela. Four species were discovered during this survey, including two local species: Lymnaea cubensis and Lymnaea cousini and two exotic species: Lymnaea truncatula and Lymnaea columella. The most common local species was L. cubensis which was found at 16 out of the 298 sampling sites. This species has a large distribution area throughout the Northern part of Venezuela and was encountered from sea level to an al

Tiny guardian of the spring: Description of the first Islamiinae (Mollusca, Hydrobiidae) from the Caucasus.

Gveleshapia kvevri gen. et sp. nov. represents the first formally described species of Islamiinae from the Caucasus, extending the distribution of this subfamily far beyond its traditionally outlined Mediterranean range. The new taxon was discovered during fieldwork in 2021-2022 in Mandaeti village, Imereti, Georgia. Morphological examination of seven ethanol-preserved specimens and six empty shells, combined with phylogenetic analysis, confirms its distinct taxonomic status. The genus is characterized by an elongate-conical shell with up to 5.2 whorls, trilobate penis morphology, and the abse

Light and electron microscopy studies of the oesophagus and crop epithelium in Aplysia depilans (Mollusca, Opisthobranchia).

The oesophagus and crop epithelium of Aplysia depilans consist in a single layer of columnar cells with apical microvilli, and some of them also possess cilia. Cell membrane invaginations, small vesicles, multivesicular bodies and many dense lysosomes were observed in the apical region of the cytoplasm. In most cells, a very large lipid droplet was observed above the nucleus and a smaller one was frequently found below the nucleus; glycogen granules are also present. Considering these ultrastructural features, it seems that these cells collect nutritive substances from the lumen by endocytosis

Characterization of the bacterial microbiota of Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818) (Mollusca: Gastropoda) from Brazil.

UNLABELLED: Roughly 200 000 000 people in 74 countries infected with schistosomes all share the fact that they came in contact freshwater harbouring infected snails. The aim of the study is to characterize the microbiota of wild and laboratory-reared snails of Biomphalaria glabrata from Pernambuco, Brazil. The microbiota of these molluscs was identified biochemically by the VITEK 2 automated microbiological system. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was carried out by the disc diffusion method with ß-lactam antibiotics, aminoglycosides, quinolones, folate pathway inhibitors, fenicols and tet

[Participation of Codiella troscheli (Mollusca: Prosobranchia) in the Metorchis albidus (Trematoda; Opisthorchidae) life cycle].

Investigating Mollusca prosobranchia of the Bithyniidae family in the water reservoirs of the Novosibirsk Region in 1994-1998 first revealed that Codiella troscheli had the trematode Metorchis albidus (Braun, 1893). The species affiliation of the trematode was experimentally verified. This paper presents the results of studies of the seasonal and daily emission of M. albidus cercariae and data on their longevity in the environment, on the ability of the cercariae to live in fish and that of metacercariae in the body of a definitive host. The studies have indicated that not only the trematode O

Antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of flavonoid and phenolics extracted from Sepia pharaonis ink (Mollusca: Cephalopoda).

BACKGROUND: Several studies have been reported previously on the bioactivities of different extracts of marine molluscs. Therefore, we decided to evaluate the cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities of S. pharaonis ink as a highly populated species in the Red Sea. We extracted the flavonoids from the ink and analyzed their composition. Then we evaluated systematically the cytotoxic and antimicrobial properties of this extract. A pharmacokinetic study was also conducted using SwissADME to assess the potential of the identified flavonoids and phenolic compounds from the ink extract to be orally a

Physiological alterations in Pseudosuccinea columella (Mollusca: Gastropoda) after infection by Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7 (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae).

The snail Pseudosuccinea columella participates in the distribution of Fasciola hepatica in the environment by acting as its intermediate host. Therefore, the control of this lymnaeid is one of the ways to prevent hepatic fascioliasis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of P. columella to infective juveniles (IJs) of the entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) Heterorhabditis baujardi in laboratory conditions, as well as to investigate aspects related to the biochemistry and histopathology of snails exposed or not to the EPNs during three weeks. The EPN exposure induced sig

Prevalence of Larval-Stage Dicrocoeliidae (Digenea) Trematodes in Helix lucorum (Mollusca: Pulmonata) in Van Province.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of larval-stage Dicrocoeliidae trematodes in Helix lucorum, a land snail found in Van Province. METHODS: Helix lucorum snails were collected in April, May, and June 2017 from Edremit and Gevaş, the central districts of Van Province, especially from natural areas where ruminants predominate. The snails were anesthetized with magnesium chloride, were removed from their shells, and their digestive glands were disrupted. The disrupted parts were examined under a microscope. RESULTS: In Van Province, H. lucorum snails were found t

Phylogenetic relationships among Opisthobranchia (Mollusca: Gastropoda) based on mitochondrial cox 1, trnV, and rrnL genes.

We reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships among 37 species representing seven main lineages within Opisthobranchia (Mollusca: Gastropoda) based on a mitochondrial fragment that included partial cox 1, complete trnV, and partial rrnL genes (about 2500 bp). Phylogenetic analyses confirmed tentatively that all studied main opisthobranch lineages conformed monophyletic groups except Nudibranchia. The sacoglossan Ascobulla was placed as the most basal lineage of opisthobranchs. The basommatophoran pulmonate Siphonaria was recovered within Opisthobranchia between Ascobulla and the remaining op

[Predation of Lymnaea (Galba) truncatula Müller by Zonitoides nitidus Müller (Mollusca Gastropoda Pulmonata) (author's transl)].

Zonitoides nitidus is omnivorous with carnivorous tendancies: the presence of food coming from snails is required for growth of this predator. This snail is not selective for the choice of its preys. Zonitoides cannot be taken for an absolute predator for all growing periods of Lymnaea truncatula: eggs and large snails are not eaten. This species can be cannibal.

STENOPHYSA MARMORATA (MOLLUSCA: PHYSIDADE) AS AN INTERMEDIATE HOST OF A SNAKE TREMATODE OF THE FAMILY RENIFERIDAE IN BRAZIL.

Species of the family Reniferidae are trematodes found in the oral cavity and esophagus of snakes from Nearctic and Neotropical regions. Although Renifer heterocoelium has been reported in different snake species from South America, the snails involved in its transmission remain unknown. In this study, a xiphidiocercaria emerged from the physid snail Stenophysa marmorata from Brazil and was subjected to morphological and molecular study. The general morphology, including the shape of the stylet and arrangement of penetration glands, resembles that described for reniferid trematodes from North

Is Galba schirazensis (Mollusca, Gastropoda) an intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda, Digenea) in Ecuador?

Fasciolosis is a widely distributed disease in livestock in South America but knowledge about the epidemiology and the intermediate hosts is relatively scarce in Ecuador. For three months, lymnaeid snails were sampled (n = 1482) in Pichincha Province at two sites located in a highly endemic area. Snails were identified (based on morphology and ITS-2 sequences) and the infection status was established through microscopic dissection and a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based technique. Techniques based on morphology were not useful to accurately name the collected snail species. Compa

Allozyme differentiation in the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Mollusca: cephalopoda) from the NE Atlantic and Mediterranean.

The Atlantic-Mediterranean area has recently been proposed as a new phylogeographical area on the basis of concordance of genetic differentiation patterns observed in several marine species. However, additional taxa need to be studied to establish the phylogeographical relationship between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Eleven samples of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis around the Iberian Peninsula, one from the Canary Islands, and another from Fiumicino (Italy) were screened for 33 allozyme loci. Genetic variability was low in all samples (He between 0.022 and 0. 076). Intersample genetic di

Genetic sex determination, gender identification and pseudohermaphroditism in the knobbed whelk, Busycon carica (Mollusca: Melongenidae).

We report perhaps the first genic-level molecular documentation of a mammalian-like 'X-linked' mode of sex determination in molluscs. From family inheritance data and observed associations between sex-phenotyped adults and genotypes in Busycon carica, we deduce that a polymorphic microsatellite locus (bc2.2) is diploid and usually heterozygous in females, hemizygous in males, and that its alleles are transmitted from mothers to sons and daughters but from fathers to daughters only. We also employ bc2.2 to estimate near-conception sex ratio in whelk embryos, where gender is indeterminable by vi
