Gm1 gangliosidosis associated with neonatal-onset of diffuse ecchymoses and mongolian spots.

A 7-month old girl with GM1 gangliosidosis type 1 manifested with diffuse ecchymosis and Mongolian spots. The cutaneous lesions were present at birth before the appearance of the other features of the disease. We postulate that dermal pigmentation may be recognized as an early sign of GM1 gangliosidosis.

Phacomatosis pigmentopigmentalis: aberrant Mongolian spots and segmental café au lait macules.

We report a case of an otherwise healthy male newborn, with segmental café au lait spots on his left buttocks and left thigh down to the medial knee, in a nevoid pattern, and an aberrant Mongolian spot on the ipsilateral cheek of the buttocks in a checkerboard pattern. We propose the name phacomatosis pigmentopigmentalis in analogy to phacomatosis pigmentovascularis, and phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica.

The so-called Mongolian spots and suspected child abuse - difficulties in differential diagnosis.

The assessment of physical violence against children is an important issue in forensic medicine, particularly in the case of infants and tod … ical records and a physical examination using a dermatoscope, pale-blue spots characteristic of the Mongolian spot were found in the lumbar and buttock areas. Mongolian spots are congenital developmental abnormalities classified as melanocytic naevi. In most cases, the changes appear immediately after birth or shortly thereafter. Clinically, a lesion appears as …

Report of an infant with GM1 gangliosidosis type I and extensive and unusual mongolian spots.

An infant with GM1 gangliosidosis was found to have an eruption at birth consisting of extensive and unusual slate blue macules resembling mongolian spots. All areas of skin were involved except face, scalp, palms, and soles. A biopsy of a macule obtained at 5 months of age demonstrated melanocytic cells in the dermis consistent with monogolian spot but also a perivascular histiocytic infiltrate. At 8 months of age, absence of beta-galactosidase activity was documented in both peripheral leukocytes and skin fibroblasts confirming the diagnosis of GM1 gangliosidosis. The dermal histiocytic cell…

Atypical localized Mongolian spots in dark pigmented skin - a challenge for forensic medical examination.

The assessment of skin changes in the context of possible child abuse is an important task in forensic medicine. This requires knowledge of pigmentation variants and pigmentation disorders such as congenital dermal melanocytosis, which includes Mongolian spots. Particularly in the case of atypical localization and dark pigmented skin, the differentiation from hematomas can be challenging. A case of two Nigerian siblings with extensive and atypically localized Mongolian spots is reported. The 1.5-year-old girl showed Mongolian spots on her back and the right side of her trunk. The 8-year-old bo…

Incidence of Mongolian spots and its common sites at two university hospitals in Tehran, Iran.

A total of 2,305 consecutive newborns at Shariati Hospital, Tehran, Iran, and 1,706 at Lolagar Hospital, Tehran, Iran, were examined for 2 years (2004-2006). Mongolian spots were found in 11.4% and 37.3% of newborns at Shariati and Lolagar hospitals, respectively. The most frequent site of involvement is the sacral, followed by the gluteal area.

[A new variety of neurocutaneous melanosis: benign leptomeningeal melanocytoma associated with extensive Mongolian spot on the back].

A 38-year-old Japanese man presented with a blue macule on the back. A spinal meningeal tumor at the C3-C5 levels was detected radiologically and excised. The histological findings in the biopsy specimen from the blue macule were consistent with an extensive Mongolian spot. The histological diagnosis of the meningeal tumor was benign melanocytoma. The case was thought to be a new variety of neurocutaneous melanosis.

Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis: Implications for severity with special reference to Mongolian spots associated with Sturge-Weber and Klippel-Trenaunay syndromes.

In 1947 the term phakomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) was coined to represent the association of widespread, aberrant, and persistent nevus flammeus and pigmentary abnormalities. Four types of PPV have been recognized with type II (nevus flammeus and Mongolian spots) being the most common. Most early cases were of Asian or African descent. Many cases were subsequently associated with Sturge-Weber (S-W) and Klippel-Trenaunay (K-T) syndromes. Almost no literature reports have appeared in the genetic or dysmorphology literature! We present six cases of PPV in which five were either African, Asia…

Natural history of extensive Mongolian spots in mucopolysaccharidosis type II (Hunter syndrome): a survey among 52 Japanese patients.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have shown a correlation between extensive Mongolian spots and mucopolysaccharidosis type II (Hunter syndrome). However, a statistical survey of the incidence and natural history of extensive Mongolian spots among the patients with Hunter syndrome is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of extensive Mongolian spots, to determine the natural course of the spots according to age in Japanese patients with Hunter syndrome, and to compare them with the results obtained from the patients' brothers who did not have Hunter syndrome. PATIENTS/METHODS: Fifty-two …

Large aberrant Mongolian spots coexisting with cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (phacomatosis pigmentovascularis type V or phacomatosis cesiomarmorata).

A 1-month-old boy showed cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC) involving a block-like pattern on his left leg and thigh and on the left side of his trunk, along with bilateral greyish-blue hyperpigmentation involving the buttocks and thighs and being in part intermingled with CMTC. This association of CMTC with Mongolian spots has been reported as a distinct type of phacomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV), namely PPV type V. More recently, the term phacomatosis cesiomarmorata (cesius = blue) has been proposed. We believe phacomatosis cesiomarmorata is another example of twin spotting …

The case of a boy with nevus of Ota, extensive Mongolian spot, nevus flammeus, nevus anemicus and cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita: a unique instance of phacomatosis pigmentovascularis.

Phacomatosis pigmentovascularis is a rare, congenital condition characterized by a combination of cutaneous melanocytic lesions and vascular malformation. We discuss an entirely unique case of Phacomatosis pigmentovascularis with nevus of Ota, extensive Mongolian spot, nevus flammeus, nevus anemicus and cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita, which may represent a heretofore undescribed variant of phacomatosis pigmentovascularis.

Extensive and Progressing Congenital Dermal Melanocytosis Leading to Diagnosis of GM1 Gangliosidosis.

Congenital dermal melanocytosis (CDM) is a birthmark composed of macular blue-grey hyperpigmentation commonly observed in the lumbosacral region of infants. Generally resolving by childhood, it is traditionally considered a benign condition, but it may be a sign of underlying lysosomal storage disease. We report a case of biopsy-confirmed CDM in a 2-month-old girl of Brazilian descent later diagnosed with infantile GM1 gangliosidosis.
