Infectious agents present in monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) and rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) invasive species in the parks of Madrid and Seville, Spain.

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of invasive species into an ecosystem could result in biodiversity loss and the spread of infectious agents that could cause re-emergent or emergent zoonotic diseases. Monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) and rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) are considered widespread invasive exotic species in urban habitats from the Iberian Peninsula. The aim of this study was to assess the presence of relevant infectious agents in wild parakeets captured in urban parks in Madrid and Seville (Spain). METHODS: A total of 81 cloacal samples were collected and analysed u

Mogroside-Rich Monk Fruit Extract Improves Glycemic Control Without Promoting Additional Weight Gain Compared With Sucralose and Sucrose in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

A high-fat diet (HFD) with excessive sugar intake contributes to obesity and type 2 diabetes, leading to increased use of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS). However, evidence on their metabolic effects remains inconsistent, especially between natural and synthetic NNS. This study compared the effects of a natural NNS, monk fruit extract (MFE), with sucrose and synthetic sucralose, at equivalent sweetness on body weight and glucose homeostasis in HFD-induced obese mice. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed an HFD for 8 weeks to induce obesity, then randomized to receive distilled water (control), sucrose (2

Haplotype-resolved T2T genome and population resequencing provide insights into the domestication and mogroside biosynthesis of Siraitia grosvenorii (Cucurbitaceae).

Monk fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii, Cucurbitaceae) is globally renowned for its triterpenoid glycoside mogroside V, a high-intensity, non-caloric natural sweetener. However, its domestication and mogroside biosynthesis remain largely unknown. Here, we report a haplotype-resolved telomere-to-telomere (T2T) gapless genome for monk fruit, consisting of 14 chromosomes with genome sizes of 316.21 Mb (Hap1) and 316.07 Mb (Hap2). Comparative genomic analyses of the haplotypes revealed that structural variations and transposable elements have significantly contributed to genomic variation and architectu

Ectoparasite sharing among native and invasive birds in a metropolitan area.

Parasite-mediated competition has been reported to be one of the most harmful, although overlooked, impacts that alien species have on native ecosystems. Monk parakeets Myiopsitta monachus are successful invaders in Europe, where they have been introduced from South America. Colonial nests of these parrots may also host other species, e.g. the rock pigeon Columba livia forma domestica. In this work, we analysed the ectoparasite composition of monk parakeets in Barcelona (Spain) and we evaluated their potential role as parasite-mediated competitors, by comparing their parasitic load with that o

[Introduction of Indian medicine into China in the Wei-Jin-Southern-Northern dynasties as interpreted by beriberi].

Since the sea route between China and all countries in the Western Region was unimpeded, many Buddhist monks came to China. Some of them settled in Lingnan Region. With them, Indian medicine was imported which greatly expanded the coverage of TCM. Some of the Northerners moved southward into Lingnan Region and contracted beriberi which were cured by Indian monks. The author explores the importation of Indian medcine through analysis of beriberi as an example.

Optimization of recombinant SgUGT94CG1 glycosyltransferase enables efficient bioconversion of bitter mogrosides into sweet mogrosides from immature Siraitia grosvenorii.

BACKGROUND: Mogrosides, natural sweeteners derived from Siraitia grosvenorii (monk fruit), are low-calorie, high-potency, safe, and non-toxic alternatives to sucrose, making them particularly suitable for obese individuals and diabetic patients. However, the content of sweet mogrosides in naturally ripened monk fruit is limited. The glycosyltransferase SgUGT94CG1 addresses this limitation by catalyzing the in vitro conversion of bitter, low-glycosylated mogrosides into sweet, highly glycosylated mogrosides through regiospecific glycosylation. RESULTS: The SgUGT94CG1 gene was expressed in E. c

Uncemented two-component femoral prosthesis for the hip joint. A 50-month follow-up study.

The Monk Duopleet femoral interlocking uncemented two-component endoprosthesis consists of a polyethylene cup covered by a metal cap and an Austin-Moore type stem. Seventy-two patients (average age, 71 years) were treated by this arthroplasty: 27 for subcapital femoral neck fracture, 36 for osteoarthritis, and nine as an exchange operation. Three patients died following operation. After a mean follow-up time of 50 months, 47 patients were reexamined clinically and radiographically. Because of loosening, four patients had the prosthesis removed. Twenty-six patients were classified as excellent,

Macroparasites of introduced parakeets in Italy: a possible role for parasite-mediated competition.

Alien species are considered a cause of biodiversity loss throughout the world. An important but often overlooked form of competition with native species is the parasite-mediated one. Introduced species may bring their own parasites from their native ranges (spillover) or get native parasites from native species, thus increasing the parasites' spread and transmission risk (spillback). Thus, a complete knowledge of parasites hosted by introduced species is important to assess and to possibly prevent impacts. Ring-necked and monk parakeets have been introduced in many European countries, where t

[Buddhist influences on Sun Simiao's precious prescriptions for emergency].

Living in a period when the Buddhism was quite flourishing, Sun had a close contact with the monk Dao Xuan, the founder of Nanshan Sect Buddhism. Sun's Quian jin fang adopted all schools including Buddhism, evidenced by the following 3 aspects: 1) Direct Buddhist influence, mainly on medical morality; 2) Indian medicine coming together with Buddhism, including the theory of "four - element theory", the conception of all matters are medicines, pills of all disorders, recipes, and keep - fit art. Buddhism acts as a carrier here; 3) the achievements of treatment for beriberi by monks. However, Bu

Rediscovering Jain Medicine: An Aspect of Ancient Indian Medicine through the Embryology of the Taṇḍulaveyāliya.

This study reexamines the position and significance of the Jain medical tradition, long marginalized in the history of Indian medicine, by analyzing the embryological discourse in the Jain text Taṇḍulaveyāliya. Existing narratives of Indian medical history have predominantly centered on Ayurveda, with Kenneth G. Zysk asserting that Jainism "failed to systematize medicine within its monastic tradition." However, Mari J. Stuart demonstrated the institutionalization of Jain monastic medicine through her study of 6th-7th century Śvetāmbara commentaries. Building upon this foundation, the present s

[Humans want to have it normal. Catholic clearing-up in handling devil features and other forms of deviation].

Using the exemplary case of the former monk Jacob Endorfer, this essay investigates the encounter with social norms, deviations, and the construction of madness in the cloister environment at the end of the 18th century. The perceptions of self and others are shown to exhibit strong differences. While for Endorfer it is a matter of his immutable bodily infirmity and the intrusion of supernatural powers, his immediate environment demands of him the application of the Enlightenment concept of continual self-improvement. However, not until the controversy concerning the issue of the obligation of

Intestinal parasite infection in the Augustinian friars and general population of medieval Cambridge, UK.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how lifestyle may have impacted the risk of contracting intestinal parasites in medieval England . Regular clergy (such as those living in monasteries) and the lay population form interesting groups for comparison as diet and lifestyle varied significantly. Monasteries were built with latrine blocks and hand washing facilities, unlike houses of the poor. MATERIALS: Sediment samples from the pelvis, along with control samples from feet and skull, of 19 burials of Augustinian Friars (13th-16th century), and 25 burials from All Saints by the Castle parish cemetery (10th

Neurological problems of jazz legends.

A variety of neurological problems have affected the lives of giants in the jazz genre. Cole Porter courageously remained prolific after severe leg injuries secondary to an equestrian accident, until he succumbed to osteomyelitis, amputations, depression, and phantom limb pain. George Gershwin resisted explanations for uncinate seizures and personality change and herniated from a right temporal lobe brain tumor, which was a benign cystic glioma. Thelonious Monk had erratic moods, reflected in his pianism, and was ultimately mute and withdrawn, succumbing to cerebrovascular events. Charlie Park

Nanhai Jigui Neifa Zhuan: exploration of and research on hygiene, medicine and health care knowledge in ancient India.

BACKGROUND: The famous Tang Dynasty monk Yi Jing travelled to ancient India in 671 AD, visited more than 30 regions and returned to China in 695 AD. He wrote Nanhai Jigui Neifa Zhuan, which he completed in 691 AD. It describes the basic rules, namely 'Inner Dharma' (Neifa,) that Buddhist sites and monks should follow in their daily lives. Additionally, the author provided an overview of ancient Indian Buddhist medicine, covering aetiology, diagnosis, medication, acupuncture, health preservation and other aspects, which exhibited distinct characteristics. Beliefs about tobacco, health, and addiction among adults in Cambodia: findings from a national survey.

There remains a very high rate of smoked and smokeless tobacco use in the Western Pacific Region. The most recent findings from national adult tobacco surveys indicate that very few daily users of tobacco intend to quit tobacco use. In Cambodia, a nation that is predominantly Buddhist, faith-based tobacco control programs have been implemented where, under the fifth precept of Buddhism that proscribes addictive behaviors, monks were encouraged to quit tobacco and temples have been declared smoke-free. In the present study, we included items on a large national tobacco survey to examine the rel

On the early uses of the word 'gout': novel evidence and a critical assessment of the published literature.

Recognized since antiquity, gout is still a relevant pathology with rising prevalence and incidence. This study aims to assess the reference accuracy in journal articles mentioning the early use of the word 'gout'. Specifically, it investigates whether the term was indeed coined in the 13th century by the Dominican monk Randolphus of Bocking, as widely believed. Several historical sources in their original Latin were consulted to test the hypothesis of literary mentions predating Randolphus of Bocking's description. At the same time, biomedical articles spanning the last two decades were perus
