[Comorbidity between eating disorders and mood disorders: review].

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidity between eating disorders (ED) and mood disorders is a major issue when evaluating and treating patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN). In the literature, estimated comorbidity rates of mood disorders in subjects with ED differ widely across studies. Obviously, it is difficult to compare results from various sources because of differences in methods of assessment of depressive symptoms and in diagnostic criteria for both ED and mood disorders. Furthermore, few studies have included control groups, and, since mood disorders are among the most frequent

Glia mechanisms in mood regulation: a novel model of mood disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence in clinical and preclinical studies has implicated glutamate neurotransmissions in pathophysiology of mood disorders. The regulation of amino acid neurotransmission, i.e., glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) involves coordinated mechanisms of uptake and transport within a tripartite synaptic system that includes neurons and glia. Newly appreciated role of the glia, more specifically astrocytes on neuronal functions combined with reported postmortem abnormalities of glia in patients with mood disorders further supports the role of glia in mood disorders.

Mood and Anxiety Disorders: Generalized Anxiety and Panic Disorders.

Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive fear and worry. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) are two of the most common anxiety disorders in the United States. GAD is defined as excessive worry and anxiety that occur on most days for at least 6 months that affect daily functioning. PD is defined by recurrent unexpected panic attacks. Patients with symptoms of GAD or PD should be assessed for conditions such as hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, and cardiac arrhythmia before confirmation of an anxiety disorder diagnosis. Calcium Channel Antagonists for Mood Disorders.

PURPOSE: Development of new thymoleptic medications has primarily centered on anticonvulsants and antipsychotic drugs. Based on our studies of intracellular calcium ion signaling in mood disorders, we were interested in the use of novel medications that act on this mechanism of neuronal activation as potential mood stabilizers. METHOD: We reviewed the dynamics of the calcium second messenger system and the international body of data demonstrating increased baseline and stimulated intracellular calcium levels in peripheral cells of patients with bipolar mood disorders. We then examined studies

The wnt pathway in mood disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To review the evidence of the involvement of the Wnt signalling pathway in mood disorders and in the action of drugs used to treat these disorders. METHODS: We performed a careful PubMed search using as keywords all possible terms relevant to the Wnt pathway and crossing them with each of four areas, i.e., developmental effects, behavioural effects, mood disorders, and drugs used in their treatment. Papers were selected on the basis of their content and their data used for discussion. RESULTS: Neurodevelopmental and behavioural data point to the possibility of involvement of the

Mood disorders in children and adolescents.

Childhood mood disorders such as major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder have been found to be highly prevalent among children and adolescents. The emotional and behavioral dysfunction associated with these mood disorders can cause impairments across areas of functioning, including academic and social arenas. This article reviews the course, possible causes, assessment, and treatment of this group of disorders in youth and concludes by examining the implications for nurses and other health care providers of youth with mood disorders.

Biological rhythm disturbances in mood disorders.

From earliest times, psychiatrists have described biological rhythm disturbances as characteristic of mood disorders. The present flourishing of circadian biology has revealed the molecular basis of 24-h rhythmicity driven by 'clock' genes, as well as the importance of zeitgebers (synchronisers). Winter depression was first modelled on regulation of animal behaviour by seasonal changes in daylength, and led to application of light as the first successful chronobiological treatment in psychiatry. Light therapy has great promise for many other disorders (e.g. sleep-wake cycle disturbances in Alz

Cognition, mood disorders, and sex hormones.

Macaques (Macaca spp.) are useful models to evaluate effects of ovarian sex steroids and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) on mood and cognitive function due to similarities to women in their reproductive and central nervous systems. The results of nonhuman primate studies support the hypothesis that estrogen mediates specific aspects of attention and memory, yet much work is needed to understand which cognitive processes are affected, whether natural versus surgical menopause effects are different, and the interaction of age and ovarian senescence on cognitive function. This know

Relationship of mood disorders to violence.

Past research on the relationship between mood disorders and violent behavior has been inconsistent, sometimes finding a relationship between the two and sometimes finding no relationship. Any relationship is arguably complex, and this area of research would benefit from attempts to clarify the relationship. This paper addresses the issue of complexity by examining the relationship between specific mood disorder categories and symptoms and six conceptually different indicators of violent behavior. Relationships are analyzed in logistic regression models where demographic and problem drinking v

Clock gene variants differentiate mood disorders.

Genetic variations in clock-related genes were hypothesized to be involved to in the susceptibility of mood disorders MD (both unipolar (UPD) and bipolar (BPD) disorders). In our work we investigated role of gene variants form four core period proteins: CLOCK, ARNTL, TIM and PER3. The total sample comprised from 744 mood disorders inpatients (UPD = 229, BPD = 515) and 635 healthy voluntary controls. The 42 SNPs from four genes of interest were genotyped. We used single polymorphisms, haplotypes, SNPs interactions and prediction analysis using classical statistical and machine learning methods.

Mood disorders and migration: meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Migration is a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia. AIMS: To examine whether migration is also a risk factor for bipolar affective disorder, unipolar depressive disorder and mood disorders in general. METHOD: Medline was searched for population-based incidence studies concerning mood disorders among migrants and mean relative risks were computed using a mixed-effects statistical model. RESULTS: Only a few studies of unipolar depressive disorder were retrieved. The mean relative risk of developing bipolar affective disorder among migrants was 2.47 (95% CI 1.33-4.59).

Mood disorders following traumatic brain injury.

Mood disorders are a frequent complication of traumatic brain injury that exerts a deleterious effect on the recovery process and psychosocial outcome of brain injured patients. Prior psychiatric history and impaired social support have been consistently reported as risk factors for developing mood disorders after traumatic brain injury (TBI). In addition, biological factors such as the involvement of the prefrontal cortex and probably other limbic and paralimbic structures may play a significant role in the complex pathophysiology of these disorders. Preliminary studies have suggested that se

Comorbidity of mood and anxiety disorders.

This article reviews data on the prevalence of panic, social phobia, generalized anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder, and research documenting the comorbidity of these disorders with major depression (MDD). These anxiety disorders are frequently comorbid with MDD, and 50-60% of individuals with MDD report a lifetime history of one or more of these anxiety disorders. The anxiety disorders are also highly correlated with one another, and approximately one-quarter to one-half of individuals with each of the anxiety disorders report a lifetime history of an alcohol or substance use disorder

Seasonal mood patterns in eating disorders.

There has been an increasing body of research literature suggesting a seasonal pattern of mood fluctuations and eating behavior in bulimic patients. Fornari et al. [5] reported worsening of bulimic symptoms during winter. There is a logical connection between Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and bulimia nervosa as both show increased appetite and carbohydrate craving and probably share a common neurobiologic abnormality such as serotonergic dysfunction. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of SAD in a sample of 259 consecutively evaluated outpatients admitted to an eating dis
