Large language model attributes and perceived moral agency of artificial moral advisors.

INTRODUCTION: Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used as conversational artificial moral advisors capable of providing ethical guidance, moral reflection, and recommendations regarding complex moral dilemmas. Despite their ability to generate coherent and persuasive moral discourse, LLMs lack genuine moral understanding, intentionality, and reflective judgment, raising concerns that users may overattribute moral agency to these systems. Drawing on Theory of Mind, AI Moral Agency, and the Godspeed framework, this study investigates how perceived LLM attributes-namely anthropomorphism

Morality cut both ways: The role of cognition and emotion in attitude moralization and demoralization.

Moralized attitudes motivate social change, political participation, and charitable giving, but at the same time, hinder compromise, conformity, and acceptance of procedural solutions to conflict. Although considerable research has explored the consequences of moralized attitudes, the processes that lead to attitude moralization and demoralization are less clear. Across six studies (N = 4,464), we contrasted the moralization of attitudes about male circumcision (typically viewed as a matter of preference or convention in the United States) with the demoralization of attitudes about female circ

The moralized coalitions model: How coalitional thinking and moralization shape social perception.

Social identities increasingly align along partisan lines in the United States, creating the potential for "moralized coalitions" that structure how people perceive and evaluate others. We propose the moralized coalitions model: When people mentally represent social groups as overlapping coalitions, these representations prompt category-based inferences and shape social evaluation, especially when group boundaries are moralized. Rather than representing groups primarily in terms of traits or beliefs, individuals may also construe social groups (e.g., political parties) as coalitions of overlap

Are moral people happier? Answers from reputation-based measures of moral character.

Philosophers have long debated whether moral virtue contributes to happiness or whether morality and happiness are in conflict. Yet, little empirical research directly addresses this question. Here, we examined the association between reputation-based measures of everyday moral character (operationalized as a composite of widely accepted moral virtues such as compassion, honesty, and fairness) and self-reported well-being across two cultures. In Study 1, close others reported on U.S. undergraduate students' moral character (two samples; Ns = 221/286). In Study 2, Chinese employees (N = 711) re

Evidence for a dissociation between moral reasoning and moral decision-making in Tourette syndrome.

Despite the growing interest on how Tourette syndrome (TS) affects social cognition skills, this field remains to date relatively under-explored. Here, we aim to advance knowledge on the topic by studying moral decision-making and moral reasoning in a group of adolescents with TS and a group of healthy controls. Overall, we found higher endorsement (i.e. a greater 'yes' response rate) for utilitarian solutions of incidental and instrumental moral dilemmas in TS compared to controls. By contrast, we reported an overall higher tendency of TS individuals to apply principles described in the moral

Moral Injury, Moral Identity, and "Dirty Hands" in War Fighting and Police Work.

In this article, I undertake three main tasks. First, I argue that, contrary to the standard view, moral injury is not a species of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) but rather, on the most coherent conception of moral injury, PTSD is (in effect) a species of moral injury. In doing so, I make use of the notion of caring deeply about something or someone worthy of being cared deeply about. Second, I consider so-called "dirty hands" actions in police work and in war, and distinguish these from the morally legitimate, but harmful, actions of police officers and of war fighters, such as the mo

Twentieth century morality: The rise and fall of moral concepts from 1900 to 2007.

Trends in the cultural salience of morality across the 20th century in the Anglophone world, as reflected in changing use of moral language, were explored using the Google Books (English language) database. Relative frequencies of 304 moral terms, organized into six validated sets corresponding to general morality and the five moral domains proposed by moral foundations theory, were charted for the years 1900 to 2007. Each moral language set displayed unique, often nonlinear historical trajectories. Words conveying general morality (e.g., good, bad, moral, evil), and those representing Purity-

Morals or markets? Regulating assisted reproductive technologies as morality or economic policies in the states.

BACKGROUND: The availability of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) in the medical marketplace complicates our understanding of reproductive public policy in the United States. Political debates over ARTs often are based on fundamental moral principles of life, reproduction, and kinship, similar to other reproductive policies in the United States. However, ARTs are an important moneymaking private enterprise for the U.S. biotechnology industry. This project investigates how the U.S. states regulate these unique and challenging technologies as either moral policies or economic policies.

Supervision, Moral Distress and Moral Injury Within Palliative Care-A Qualitative Study.

The number of people requiring palliative care is increasing. This can result in moral and ethical conflicts that may lead to psychological distress and moral injury. (MI). Solutions are needed to counteract career abandonment-supervision (SV) could be one solution. This study examines the extent to which palliative care nurses link MI to their everyday experiences and whether SV can contribute to the identification and prevention of moral distress and MI. In addition, factors that influence the implementation of, participation in, and perception of SV are analyzed. A qualitative study design

Pushing moral buttons: the interaction between personal force and intention in moral judgment.

In some cases people judge it morally acceptable to sacrifice one person's life in order to save several other lives, while in other similar cases they make the opposite judgment. Researchers have identified two general factors that may explain this phenomenon at the stimulus level: (1) the agent's intention (i.e. whether the harmful event is intended as a means or merely foreseen as a side-effect) and (2) whether the agent harms the victim in a manner that is relatively "direct" or "personal". Here we integrate these two classes of findings. Two experiments examine a novel personalness/direct

Palliative models of care for later stages of mental disorder: maximizing recovery, maintaining hope, and building morale.

BACKGROUND: The concept of staging of disease in psychiatry has developed over the past years. A neglected component of this model pertains to people in the advanced stages of a mental illness, who remain symptomatic and functionally impaired despite treatment. These patients are often high service utilizers, receiving complex multimodal treatments where the balance of risk and benefit shifts perceptibly. In this paper, we argue the need to adopt 'palliative' models of care for some individuals, and consider changing the therapeutic goals to follow care pathways similar to those used in other

Philadelphia Geriatric Morale Scale in essential tremor: a population-based study in three Spanish communities.

Essential tremor (ET) is associated with both functional disability and depression. Each could contribute to a poor sense of well-being and low morale. We hypothesized that morale would be lower in ET cases than controls. Using a population-based, cross-sectional design, morale was assessed in 187 ET cases and 561 matched controls living in three communities in central Spain using the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (PGCMS) (range = 0 [low morale]-17), which included three-dimensions of psychological well-being: agitation, lonely dissatisfaction, and attitude toward own aging. The P

The role of measurement in moral injury care: latent profiles on the moral injury and distress scale.

INTRODUCTION: Although studies of moral injury proliferated over the past decade, few studies have examined common moral injury symptom presentations. METHODS: Data were analyzed from a population-based sample (N = 645) of combat veterans, healthcare workers, and first responders. All participants endorsed exposure to a potentially morally injurious event (PMIE) and completed the Moral Injury and Distress Scale (MIDS). RESULTS: Latent profile analysis revealed three distinct symptom profiles based on MIDS items assessing psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual symptoms of moral injur

Negative emotionality downregulation affects moral choice but not moral judgement of harm: a pharmacological study.

Previous neuroscientific research has expounded on the fundamental role played by emotion during moral decision-making. Negative emotionality has been observed to exert a general inhibitory effect towards harmful behaviors against others. Nevertheless, the downregulation of negative affects at different levels of moral processing (e.g. impersonal versus personal moral dilemmas) alongside its possible interactions with other factors (e.g. perspective taking) hasn't been directly assessed; both of which can assist in predicting future moral decision-making. In the present research, we empiricall

Moral luck in investment contexts: We consciously find unprofitable investments less moral.

Moral luck refers to whether an actor is morally praised or blamed for an action whose outcome they could not influence. In two studies, we investigated the behavioral importance of this phenomenon in the realm of investments, which has become increasingly subject to ethical evaluations. In our first online experiment, we examined whether people's moral evaluation of an investment decision depended on its arbitrary outcome and whether their interpretation of the nature of the decision was driven by this outcome. Our results showed that profitable investments were considered more moral than unp

Moral distress among healthcare professionals: Italian validation of the Moral Distress-Appraisal Scale.

INTRODUCTION: Moral distress impacts healthcare professionals' well-being, yet current measurement tools often rely on specific clinical scenarios, limiting their applicability. This study aimed to validate the Italian version of the Moral Distress-Appraisal Scale (MD-APPS), a context-independent instrument to assess the subjective appraisal of moral distress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional validation study was conducted. 205 professionals caring for patients with oncological and chronic-degenerative diseases across different settings were enrolled. The sample was randomly split to

Where do moral injuries come from? A relational conception of moral practice and experience.

The predominant account of the etiology of moral injuries among Veterans and military personnel in the clinical psychological and psychiatric literature construes morality as inherent in belief structures. This supports the conceptualization of moral injuries as intrapsychic phenomena resulting from exposure to high-stakes events in which fixed beliefs are contravened in ways that result in psychological harms, including maladaptive beliefs and distress. The authors identify several problems with this formulation and offer suggestions for modification, including greater focus on 1) experiences

Moral fixations: The role of moral integrity and social anxiety in the selective avoidance of social threat.

People derive their sense of belonging from perceptions of being a moral person. Research moreover suggests that social cues of rejection rapidly influence visual scanning, and result in avoidant gaze behavior, especially in socially anxious individuals. With the current eye-tracking experiment, we therefore examined whether moral integrity threats and affirmations influence selective avoidance of social threat, and how this varies with individual differences in social anxiety. Fifty-nine participants retrieved a memory of a past immoral, moral, or neutral act. Next, participants passively vie
