Sixteen common seals (Phoca vitulina) were stranded on the Belgian and northern French coasts during the summer of 1998. Eleven (10 pups and one adult) were sampled for histopathological, immunohistochemical, serological, bacteriological, parasitological and virological investigations. The main gross findings were severe emaciation, acute haemorrhagic enteritis, acute pneumonia, interstitial pulmonary emphysema and oedema, and chronic ulcerative stomatitis. Microscopical lung findings were acute to subacute pneumonia with interstitial oedema and emphysema. Severe lymphocytic depletion was obse

Two common porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), one found stranded on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, and the other in the Moray Firth, Scotland, in late 1990, were examined post mortem. Lesions of diffuse bronchointerstitial pneumonia were present in both animals; they were characterised by the infiltration of alveoli with leucocytes, macrophages and multinucleate syncytia, the necrosis of bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium, focal proliferation of type II pneumocytes and occasional acidophilic cytoplasmic inclusions in alveolar macrophages and syncytia. Lymphoid depletion was apparent in the spleen, t

Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) epizootics have recurrently occurred in the western Mediterranean Sea since the first reported outbreak in 1990-1992. In August-November 2025, 5 stranded striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba were diagnosed with systemic DMV infection in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. Dolphins were thin, and 4 of them had typical viral lesions of bronchiolointerstitial pneumonia, lymphoid depletion, and encephalitis. RT-PCR for DMV was positive in at least 2 organs in all dolphins, and viral antigen was detected by immunohistochemistry in 4 dolphins. Four dolphins died due to morbi

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is a global threat to cetaceans. We report a novel morbillivirus from a Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) that stranded in Maui, Hawaii in 2018 that is dissimilar to the beaked whale morbillivirus previously identified from Hawaii and to other CeMV strains. Histopathological findings included intranuclear inclusions in bile duct epithelium, lymphoid depletion, rare syncytial cells and non-suppurative meningitis. Cerebellum and lung tissue homogenates were inoculated onto Vero.DogSLAMtag cells for virus isolation and cytopathic effects were observed, resulting

The immunosuppressive properties of morbilliviruses including measles and canine distemper virus (CDV) are well known, but the host cells supporting infection are poorly characterized. To identify these cells, a recombinant CDV expressing green fluorescent protein was produced by reverse genetics based on a wild-type strain lethal for ferrets. This recombinant virus fully retained virulence and blazed three lymphocyte-based pathways through the immune system of its host: first, it infected rapidly and massively circulating B and T cells; second, it took over and damaged secondary lymphatic org

Canine distemper virus (CDV) was previously considered to have a host range restricted to the canid family. In 1994, the virus was associated with sporadic outbreaks of distemper in captive felids. However, after severe mortality occurred in the Serengeti lions (Panthera leo), attention became focused on the pathogenesis of the virus and a concerted effort was made to identify the virus as CDV or a closely related feline morbillivirus. The present study was designed to explore the susceptibility of ferrets to challenge with two morbilliviruses isolated from lions and the protective effects of

We describe gross, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features of Streptococcus phocae and cetacean morbillivirus coinfection in a short-beaked common dolphin Delphinus delphis. Major gross findings were cutaneous purulent nodules in the tail fluke, vegetative mitral valve endocarditis, and presumed postpartum pyometra. Histologic examination revealed bacterial septicemia characterized by widespread intravascular coccoid bacterial emboli. These were associated with fibrinonecrotizing to pyogranulomatous dermatitis and panniculitis, embolic pneumonia, neutrophilic and lymphoplasmacytic

Since 1990, Mediterranean striped dolphins, Stenella coeruleoalba, have suffered two mass mortality events caused by the dolphin morbillivirus (DMV), but the population-level impact is unknown because abundance estimates are spatio-temporally sparse. This study investigates whether data from epibionts of striped dolphins-the barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis, the cyamid Syncyamus aequus, and the copepod Pennella balaenoptera, with different life cycles and degrees of specificity-could provide indirect evidence on host population dynamics. To address this question, we combined empirical and the

Long-term persistent measles virus (MeV) infection of the central nervous system (CNS) can result in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), an invariably fatal late neurological complication of measles. Analogous SSPE-like chronic diseases have also been reported in adult dogs, cetaceans, and more recently harbor seals following infection by canine distemper virus (CDV), dolphin morbillivirus (DMV), and phocine distemper virus (PDV), respectively. Here, we characterize different animal morbilliviruses (CDVlynx, PDV2001, PDV2014, and DMV232-18) that persisted in the CNS of their respective

Morbillivirus canis, commonly named Canine distemper virus (CDV), is a morbillivirus implicated in several signs in the Canidae family. In dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), common signs of infection include conjunctivitis, digital hyperkeratosis and neuropathologies. Even with vaccination, the canine distemper disease persists worldwide so the molecular pathways implicated in the infection processes have been an interesting and promising area in new therapeutic drugs research in recent years. It is known that in the process of virus infection, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) loses its homeostasis,

The pathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) findings associated with infection due to canine morbilivírus (canine distemper virus, CDV) are described in coatis (Nasua nasua). Tissue fragments of coatis (n = 13) that died at the Bela Vista Sanctuary, Paraná, Southern Brazil, were routinely processed for histopathology to identify the main histopathologic patterns as compared to that of the domestic dog. Selected formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue fragments of the lungs, liver, urinary bladder and small intestine were used in IHC assays designed to identify the antigens of CDV, ca

A recently deceased juvenile male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was found floating in the Gulf of Mexico, off Sand Key in Clearwater, Florida. At autopsy, we identified pneumonia and a focus of malacia in the right cerebrum. Cytologic evaluation of tissue imprints from the right cerebrum revealed fungal hyphae. Fungal cultures of the lung and brain yielded Aspergillus fumigatus, which was confirmed by amplification of a portion of the fungal nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 region sequence. Microscopic pulmonary lesions of bronchiolar epithelial cell syncytia with intr

Feline morbillivirus (FeMV), first identified in 2012, is a member of the genus Morbillivirus. Like other morbilliviruses, FeMV utilizes signalling lymphocytic activation molecule (CD150 or SLAMF1) as a cellular receptor; however, it is genetically distinct and notable for its unique tissue tropism, particularly its ability to establish persistent infections in the feline kidney. In this study, we established a plaque assay system using Vero cells stably expressing feline SLAMF1 and quantitatively evaluated neutralizing antibodies against FeMV in the sera of domestic cats. The results showed t

Nocardia asiatica causing pyogranulomatous pleuropneumonia is reported for the first time in a dog coinfected with canine morbillivirus (CM), diagnosed based on epidemiological, clinical, haematological, images, microbiological, histopathological, polymerase chain reaction and hsp65 gene sequencing findings. The immunosuppression of CM probably favoured the opportunistic behaviour of N. asiatica. Despite the therapeutic measures, the animal died, mainly due to respiratory distress. The association of methods to improve early diagnosis, therapy procedures and prognosis of canine nocardiosis is

Morbillivirus (e.g., measles virus [MeV] and canine distemper virus [CDV]) host cell entry is coordinated by two interacting envelope glycoproteins, namely, an attachment (H) protein and a fusion (F) protein. The ectodomain of H proteins consists of stalk, connector, and head domains that assemble into functional noncovalent dimer-of-dimers. The role of the C-terminal module of the H-stalk domain (termed linker) and the connector, although putatively able to assume flexible structures and allow receptor-induced structural rearrangements, remains largely unexplored. Here, we carried out a nonco

The viral genus Morbillivirus and the bacterial genus Brucella have emerged as important groups of pathogens that are known to affect cetacean health on a global scale, but neither pathogen has previously been reported from endangered sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). A female neonate sperm whale stranded alive and died near Laie on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, US, in May of 2011. Congestion of the cerebrum and enlarged lymph nodes were noted on the gross necropsy. Microscopic findings included lymphoid depletion, chronic meningitis, and pneumonia, suggesting an in utero infection. Cerebru

Over the past three decades, cetacean morbilliviruses (CeMVs) have emerged as significant pathogens affecting cetacean populations worldwide. Here, we report the genome sequence of a new CeMV, designated Fraser's dolphin morbillivirus (FDMV), isolated from a stranded Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) in Hawai'i in 2018. Next-generation sequencing facilitated recovery of the nearly complete FDMV genome (15,685 bp), and annotation indicated a genomic organization similar to that of other morbilliviruses, including six open reading frames. Genetic analysis of the FDMV RNA-dependent RNA polym

Infectious and inflammatory processes are among the most common causes of central nervous system involvement in stranded cetaceans. Meningitis and encephalitis are among the leading known natural causes of death in stranded cetaceans and may be caused by a wide range of pathogens. This study describes histopathological findings in post-mortem brain tissue specimens from stranded cetaceans associated with five relevant infectious agents: viruses [Cetacean Morbillivirus (CeMV) and Herpesvirus (HV); n = 29], bacteria (Brucella sp.; n = 7), protozoa (Toxoplasma gondii; n = 6), and helminths (Nasit

An outbreak of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in lambs and young goats of Najdi breed of sheep and goats occurred during winter 2005 at Qassim region of central Saudi Arabia. The PPR infection was confirmed by demonstration of antibodies against the virus in the serum of clinically-ill young sheep and goats using competitive ELISA test. Clinical examination of infected animals showed fever, salivation, lacrimation, mucopurulent nasal discharge, difficult breathing and diarrhoea. The disease was particularly severe in the goats. Morbidity was about 20% and mortality was less than 3 percent. A

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats, posing a significant threat to small ruminant health and rural livelihoods in Punjab, India. The objective of the present study was to investigate cases of per-acute mortality caused by Morbillivirus caprinae, which resulted in the death of 24.86 % (134/539) of animals across ten different sheep and goat farms. The overall morbidity, mortality and case fatality rate were observed during the outbreak investigation. However, necropsy and histopathological findings were strongly indicative of Morbilli
