Isolation and Identification of Morganella morganii from Rhesus Monkey (Macaca mulatta) in China.

A bacterium was isolated and identified from the secretion of a rhesus monkey with endometritis. The morphological results showed that the strain exhibited round, convex, gray-white colonies with smooth surfaces and diameters ranging from 1 to 2 mm when cultured on Columbia blood agar at 37 °C for 24 h; on salmonella-shigella agar (S.S.) at 37 °C for 24 h, the colonies appeared round, flat, and translucent. Gram staining showed negative results with blunt ends and non-spore-forming characteristics. Molecular biology results showed that the 16S rRNA sequence of the strain revealed over 96.9% si

Identification of bla KPC-2 on different plasmids of three Morganella morganii isolates.

Three Morganella morganii strains resistant to carbapenems were recovered from the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) in our hospital. Carbapenemases and extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) were respectively detected by the modified Hodge test and the modified Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) ESBL confirmatory test in all isolates. Amplification of whole-cell and plasmid DNAs extracted from isolates with primers specific for the bla (KPC) produced an amplicon confirmed to be bla (KPC-2) by sequence analysis. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing revealed that thr…

Histamine and biogenic amine production by Morganella morganii isolated from temperature-abused albacore.

Histamine-producing bacteria were isolated from albacore stored at 0, 25, 30, and 37 degrees C. They were screened using Niven's differential medium, and their histamine production was confirmed by high-pressure liquid chromatography analysis. The optimum temperature for growth of histamine-producing bacteria was 25 degrees C. The bacterium producing the highest level of histamine was isolated from fish abused at 25 degrees C. It was identified as Morganella morganii by morphological, cultural, biochemical, and antimicrobial characteristics and by the Vitek microbial identification system. The…

Morganella morganii-derived histamine impairs intestinal barrier function via HRH4 and aggravates colitis.

BACKGROUND: Pro-inflammatory dietary patterns are associated with an increased risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and shifts in the gut microbiota. Our previous multi-omics analysis had identified the enrichment of Morganella morganii (M. morganii) in both patients with CD and individuals consuming pro-inflammatory diets. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role and potential mechanisms by which M. morganii contributes to intestinal inflammation. METHODS: Using murine models of colitis, mouse colon organoids, and epithelial cell systems, combined with metabolomic profiling and pharmacologica…

A Case of an Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant with Morganella morganii Bacteremia and Peritonitis.

We describe a case of late onset Morganella morganii sepsis in an extremely low birth weight male neonate born at 23 and 4/7 weeks gestational age to a 30-year-old primigravid mother due to preterm labor. The mother was otherwise healthy with an unremarkable prenatal course. She received steroids and ampicillin prior to delivery. While initial blood cultures were negative, at day of life 4, the neonate developed signs of sepsis with leukocytosis and bandemia, and subsequent blood culture demonstrated growth of M. morganii . The patient then had spontaneous intestinal perforation on day of life…

Characterization and sequence of PhoC, the principal phosphate-irrepressible acid phosphatase of Morganella morganii.

Phosphatase activities were investigated in Morganella morganii, which is one of the few enterobacterial species producing high-level phosphate-irrepressible acid phosphatase activity (HPAP phenotype), and the gene encoding the major phosphate-irrepressible acid phosphatase was cloned, sequenced, and its product characterized. Using p-nitrophenyl phosphate as substrate, Morganella produced a major phosphate-irrepressible acid phosphatase (named PhoC) which is associated with the HPAP phenotype, a minor phosphate-irrepressible acid phosphatase, and a phosphate-repressible alkaline phosphatase. …

Morganella morganii Bacteremia in an Immunocompetent 13-Year-Old Male: A Rare Pediatric Case.

Morganella morganii is a gram-negative bacillus with intrinsic resistance to many β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and first-/second-generation cephalosporins. It is frequently associated with urinary tract, wound, and respiratory infections, and can develop into bacteremia in older adults due to age-related comorbidities and immunosenescence, but this has rarely been described in children. In this report, we present the case of a 13-year-old male with a urinary tract infection complicated by M. morganii bacteremia, who was successfully treated with antibiotics. To our knowledge, th…

[Fatal neonatal sepsis caused by vertical transmission of Morganella morganii. Report of one case].

We report a term neonate who developed early-onset sepsis due to Morganella morganii. The child was vaginally delivered after a short labor, and presented signs of perinatal asphyxia. Blood cultures taken soon after birth and from mother's lochia were positive for this microorganism. The infection was unresponsive to treatment with cefotaxime, to which the microorganism was susceptible, and the infant died at 17 days of age. M morganii is an opportunistic and uncommon pathogen, causing disease mainly in patients with underlying illness or after surgery. It is a rare perinatal pathogen, causing…

Morganella morganii pericarditis 3 years after allogenic bone marrow transplantation for mantle cell lymphoma.

We report herein a case of Morganella morganii-associated acute purulent pericarditis that developed 3 years after allogenic bone marrow transplantation. The patient was successfully treated with surgical drainage and cefotaxime for 6 weeks. Splenectomy and immunosuppression for chronic GVH-D are likely to have favored the development of this rare infectious complication after BMT. M. morganii should be added to the list of bacteria causing purulent pericarditis, especially in immunocompromised hosts.

Pathological insights and molecular responses to Morganella morganii infection in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).

Morganella morganii has emerged as a significant pathogen in aquaculture, yet its effects on largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) remain poorly understood. We isolated a pathogenic M. morganii strain (SH6) from diseased bass, caused over 76 % mortality in challenge tests with characteristic hemorrhaging, ascites, and hepatic lesions. Histopathological analysis revealed severe granulomatous inflammation and melanomacrophage centers in infected livers. Transcriptomic profiling identified 5799 differentially expressed genes, with significant enrichment in lipid metabolism pathways (fatty acid …

Cloning, sequence analyses, expression, and distribution of ampC-ampR from Morganella morganii clinical isolates.

Shotgun cloning experiments with restriction enzyme-digested genomic DNA from Morganella morganii 1, which expresses high levels of cephalosporinase, into the pBKCMV cloning vector gave a recombinant plasmid, pPON-1, which encoded four entire genes: ampC, ampR, an hybF family gene, and orf-1 of unknown function. The deduced AmpC beta-lactamase of pI 7.6 shared structural and functional homologies with AmpC from Citrobacter freundii, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica, Enterobacter cloacae, and Serratia marcescens. The overlapping promoter organization of ampC and ampR, although much sho…

Relapsing Henoch-Schönlein purpura associated with a tubo-ovarian abscess due to Morganella morganii.

Henoch-Schönlein purpura is the most common vasculitis in children. It is frequently preceded by either viral or bacterial infections of the upper respiratory tract. We present a 15-year-old female who developed recurrent episodes of Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Eventual investigation of the patient's abdominal pain, initially attributed to vasculitis involving the gastrointestinal tract, revealed a left tubo-ovarian abscess caused by Morganella morganii. Salpingo-oophorectomy resulted in complete remission of the disease process.
