This study validates a clinically accessible approach for quantifying the Upper Extremity Reachable Workspace (UERW) using monocular AI-driven Markerless Motion Capture (MMC). Objective validation of such techniques for clinically oriented tasks is essential to support their adoption in clinical motion analysis. Nine adults without impairments performed the standardized UERW task, reaching targets distributed across a virtual sphere centered on the torso and displayed via VR headset. Movements were simultaneously captured with a marker-based system and eight FLIR cameras; monocular analysis wa

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the most prevalent degenerative joint diseases, and its pathological features often lead to abnormal gait patterns and limited joint mobility. These changes induce various degrees of lower-limb compensatory mechanisms that significantly affect patients' quality of life and increase their risk of falls. An accurate and objective assessment of these gait changes and compensatory strategies is critical for clinical diagnosis, monitoring of disease progression, and the formulation of rehabilitation strategies.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investiga

Markerless motion capture allows whole-body movements to be captured without the need for physical markers to be placed on the body. This enables motion capture analyses to be conducted in more ecologically valid environments. However, the influences of varied clothing on video-based markerless motion capture assessments remain largely unexplored. This study investigated two types of clothing conditions, "Sport" (gym shirt and shorts) and "Street" (unrestricted casual clothing), on gait parameters during overground walking by 29 participants at self-selected speeds using markerless motion capt

Weight training is widely adopted and highly effective for enhancing both muscular strength and endurance. A popular weightlifting exercise is the deadlift, which targets multiple muscle groups including the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. However, incorrect technique (i.e., poor form) can slow training progress, result in asymmetrical muscle development, and cause serious injuries. The objective of this study was to validate that a self-adhesive, elastic fabric, wearable, skin-strain sensor called Motion Tape (MT) could monitor a person's posture while performing deadlift exercises. INTRODUCTION: Hand/instrument motion-tracking in surgical simulation provides valuable data to improve psychomotor skills and can serve as a formative evaluation tool. Motion analysis has been well-studied in laparoscopic surgery; however, there are essentially no studies looking at motion-tracking for flexible ureteroscopy (fURS ), a common surgical procedure requiring hand dexterity and 3D spatial awareness. We aimed to design a synchronized motion-tracking and video capture system for fURS capable of collecting objective metrics for use in surgical skills training.
METHODS: Motion tracking

Markerless motion capture may improve the accessibility and participants experience of three-dimensional gait analysis in children. This study explores aspects of usability of markerless motion capture that have not been previously studied specifically, the consequences of street clothing on lower-limb kinematics, participant and caregiver perceptions, and assessment durations. Thirty typically developing children completed two 3D gait analysis protocols. They wore either a) "Conventional" clothing required for marker-based methods and had markers placed, or b) their "Street" clothes without m

Evaluation of trunk stability is common during return-to-activity assessments. While the use of motion capture for assessment of movement quality is also becoming more popular, it is critical that the trunk is modeled similarly across participants. The purpose of this study was to determine how adjusting marker placement at the sternum, cervical, and thorax locations for purposes of defining the trunk segment influences trunk kinematics. Sagittal plane trunk angles of 18 participants were computed for a comprehensive set of trunk model variations during standing, gait, and a drop vertical jump

OBJECTIVES: This study examined how camera geometry influences the agreement of two-camera markerless joint-angle estimates with an eight-camera markerless reference system.
METHODS: Twenty-three female soccer athletes completed pre-season Y-balance, L-hop, countermovement jump, broad jump, and bodyweight squat tasks. Movements were recorded using an eight-camera Theia3D markerless system as the reference. All 28 two-camera combinations were processed using a custom Pose2Sim-based pipeline to estimate lower-limb joint angles. Camera geometry was quantified from calibration data, including cam

The object pick-up task is a fundamental activity of daily living that integrates trunk, lower- and upper-limb coordination, balance, and visuomotor control within a single, ecologically valid movement. Despite its relevance, standardized protocols for quantitatively assessing object pick-up strategies using full-body motion capture remain limited. The goal of this protocol is to demonstrate a standardized method for capturing and analyzing the object pick-up task using full-body three-dimensional motion capture and to illustrate how different movement strategies can be identified and classifi

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven markerless motion capture (MMC) technologies are increasingly being integrated into pediatric healthcare to improve the assessment and management of movement disorders. These video-based systems enable non-invasive motion analysis without wearable sensors, facilitating more natural movement assessment in children, particularly those with neurological or developmental conditions. Objectives: We evaluated the clinical applicability of AI-based MMC tools in pediatric settings for diagnosis, monitoring of motor development, and rehabilitation. Method

Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the human nervous system. PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide, affecting more than 10 million people. Despite its high prevalence, the diagnosis still relies on subjective assessments that examine motor performance through clinical scales. The use of sensor-based technologies offers a promising opportunity to improve diagnosis processes as it might make the disease progression quantifiable and more objective. This paper presents a methodology for the automatic detection of

BACKGROUND: Assessing the fit and suitability of lower limb prosthetics is heavily reliant upon clinician observation and subjective feedback, often resulting in negative impacts on the comfort and quality of life of amputees. This is particularly important in the early stages of new socket fitment.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to use optoelectronic motion capture to measure the 5 degree of freedom coupling effectiveness of a newly fitted prosthetic limb during the adjustment period (6 weeks) of an active transtibial amputee.
METHODS: A 2-part calibration and trial data collection system was e

Industrial back support exoskeletons are a promising solution to alleviate lumbar musculoskeletal strain. Due to the complexity of spinal loading, evaluation of EMG data alone has been considered insufficient to assess their support effects, and complementary kinematic and dynamic data are required. However, the acquisition of marker-based kinematics is challenging with exoskeletons, as anatomical reference points, particularly on the pelvis, are occluded by exoskeleton structures. The aim of this study was therefore to develop and validate a method to reliably reconstruct the occluded pelvic

Basketball is a high-intensity sport, and sports injuries often occur. Therefore, how to monitor the sports status of basketball players in real time, discover and prevent the occurrence of sports injuries in time, has become an urgent problem for athletes and coaches. In this paper, a motion capture system based on CNN sensor is proposed. Through the application of sensor, real-time monitoring of athletes' motion state, the system can collect athletes' movement track, speed, acceleration, stride frequency, heart rate, energy consumption and other parameters in real time. By analyzing the move

OBJECTIVES: Patients with primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD) commonly report paralaryngeal pain and discomfort, and extrinsic laryngeal muscle (ELM) tension and hyperfunction are commonly implicated. However, quantitative physiological metrics to study ELM movement patterns for the characterization of pMTD diagnosis and monitoring of treatment progress are lacking. The objectives of this study were to validate motion capture (MoCap) technology to study ELM kinematics, determine whether MoCap could distinguish ELM tension and hyperfunction between individuals with and without pMTD, and inv

Quantitative upper-limb assessment in rehabilitation traditionally relies on expensive optoelectronic reference tracking. While single-camera markerless systems offer an accessible alternative, their viewpoint-dependent accuracy and depth ambiguity remain critical concerns. This study systematically validates an integrated MediaPipe tracking pipeline (Pose and Hands) against an 8-camera optoelectronic system. Ten healthy males performed four clinical upper-limb tasks, recorded simultaneously across three spatial camera viewpoints (frontal, oblique elevated, and oblique side). To isolate spatia

Accurate lower limb motion capture is crucial for improving performance and user experience in fields such as motion analysis, rehabilitation training, and virtual reality. Traditional motion capture systems can only provide motion information, and often face issues such as occlusion or drift due to the limitations of sensor characteristics. For this purpose, we have designed a new type of data knee pad that integrates an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and five liquid metal sensors. IMU provides basic motion data, while liquid metal sensors can provide information on joint bending and muscle

Biomechanical analysis is essential for understanding and monitoring musculoskeletal impairments, with implications for clinical diagnostics and research. Current clinical methods provide isolated joint measures or qualitative observations, failing to capture motion complexity. While 3D biomechanical testing is comprehensive, its application is hindered by data volume, making it challenging to derive clinically relevant conclusions. Approaches to distill motion often neglect time-series data or are dependent on population size. To address these gaps, this study introduces the Kinematic Composi

BACKGROUND: A standardized fall risk assessment can guide targeted interventions. The widely used short physical performance battery (SPPB) for mobility assessment covers balance, gait speed, and lower limb strength, but is time-consuming and requires trained raters. The newly developed video-based smartphone application called MobiSPPB provides a rater-independent SPPB assessment. This study evaluated the technical validity and reliability of the MobiSPPB app compared to the standard rater-based SPPB. In addition, the ability to detect disease-related movement patterns was investigated.

Tools to calculate human movement patterns can benefit musculoskeletal clinicians and researchers for rehabilitation assessments. The research objective of this study was to compare two human pose estimation models (HRNet, MediaPipe) against the laboratory marker-based reference standard for joint angles and range of motion (ROM) for several movement parameters. Twenty-two healthy volunteers (Female n = 16, Male n = 6), participated to compare outputs for knee and elbow kinematics. Joint angles were calculated by selecting three marker points defining the joint and angle between them in Qualis
