The prevalence of feeding problems is over 20% in typically developing children and over 70% in children with developmental disabilities. Oral motor therapy targeting feeding disorders may have secondary/indirect positive effects on co-morbid articulation disorders in young children. The purpose of this study was to examine such indirect effects. Seven young children with feeding problems were assessed via a known standardized articulation test upon admission for feeding therapy. They received a 4-week oral motor treatment protocol toward the development of age-appropriate feeding and swallowi

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and phonic tics. Deficient motor inhibition underlying tics is one of the main hypotheses in its pathophysiology. Therefore the question arises whether this supposed deficient motor inhibition affects also voluntary movements. Despite severe motor tics, different personalities who suffer from Tourette perform successfully as neurosurgeon, pilot or professional basketball player.
METHODS: For the investigation of fine motor skills we conducted a motor performance test battery in an adult Tourette sample and an

Knowledge of Performance (KP) feedback, such as biofeedback or kinematic feedback, is used to provide information on the nature and quality of movement responses for the purpose of guiding active learning or rehabilitation of motor skills. It has been proposed that KP feedback may interfere with long-term learning when provided throughout training. Here, twelve healthy English-speaking adults were trained to produce a trilled Russian [r] in words with KP kinematic feedback using electropalatography (EPG) and without KP (noKP). Five one-hour training sessions were provided over one week with te

Striatum and its predominant input, motor cortex, are responsible for the selection and performance of purposive movement, but how their interaction guides these processes is not understood. To establish its neural and behavioral contributions, we bilaterally lesioned motor cortex and recorded striatal activity and reaching performance daily, capturing the lesion's direct ramifications within hours of the intervention. We observed reaching impairment and an absence of striatal motoric activity following lesion of motor cortex, but not parietal cortex control lesions. Although some aspects of p

The primary motor cortex (M1) of the rat contains dopaminergic terminals. The origin of this dopaminergic projection and its functional role for movement are obscure. Other areas of cortex receive dopaminergic projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain, and these projections are involved in learning phenomena. We therefore hypothesized that M1 receives a dopaminergic projection from VTA and that this projection mediates the learning of a motor skill by inducing cellular plasticity events in M1. Retrograde tracing from M1 of Long-Evans rats in conjunction with tyrosine hy

This study investigated early androgen influence on the development of human motor and visuomotor characteristics. Participants, ages 12-45 years, were individuals with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a disorder causing increased adrenal androgen production before birth (40 females, 29 males) and their unaffected relatives (29 females, 30 males). We investigated grip strength and visuomotor targeting tasks on which males generally outperform females, and fine motor pegboard tasks on which females generally outperform males. Physical characteristics (height and weight) were measured to ex

BACKGROUND: Fundamental motor skills (FMS) are essential for children's overall development and lifelong engagement in physical activity. Limited exposure to FMS during early childhood is associated with delayed motor development, potentially hindering successful participation in sport and healthy lifestyle practices.
METHODS: This study aimed to enhance the FMS of 6- to 8-year-old children through a self-designed gross motor intervention to promote future physical activity engagement. Using a quantitative research approach and a quasi-experimental design, a convenience sample of 118 children

BACKGROUND: Africa is facing a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), driven by shifts in lifestyle and dietary habits. Children with delays in motor coordination are less likely to participate in physical activity, active play, and sports, placing them at increased risk for obesity, reduced physical fitness, and cardiovascular diseases. Existing motor performance tests for school-aged children were not designed for African populations and lack culturally valid normative data.
METHODS: As part of an African-led initiative, the PERFormance and FITness test battery (PERF-FIT) wa

Schinzel-Giedion Syndrome (SGS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic SETBP1 gain-of-function variants. SGS medical features have been well described. Associated skills critical to quality of life have such as communication, feeding, and motor skills are yet to be characterised. Here we used standardised caregiver report tools to characterise these skills as well as the medical features, in 16 children with SGS (median = 5 years, 7 months, range 6 months to 12.5 years). Vineland-3 scores reflected severe impairment in communication, daily living, socialisation and motor sk

PURPOSE: Motor speech characteristics of children with Down syndrome (DS) have historically been viewed as either Childhood Dysarthria (CD) or, more infrequently, as Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). The objective of this study was to investigate motor speech deficits in a systematic manner, considering characteristics from both CAS and CD.
METHOD: Motor speech assessments were carried out on seven 3;4-8;11-year old children with DS in comparison with younger, typically-developing children using a Language-Neutral Assessment of Motor Speech for young children (LAMS). Additionally, the motor

This study assessed the temporomandibular joint of 34 children with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy for contractures to determine whether joint abnormalities were related to oral-motor dysfunction. Subjects were found to have restrictions in mandibular range of motion, increased overjet and decreased overbite. Increased overjet corresponds to retrognathia and decreased overbite relates to fixed posterior rotation of the mandible. The severity of many of these abnormalities correlated with the severity of oral-motor dysfunction. Abnormalities in overbite were particularly significant. The a

Thirteen infants with achondroplasia underwent psychometric testing as part of a comprehensive neurologic assessment. As a group, mental development was average and motor development was delayed, although a wide range of scores was obtained. Foramen magnum measurements were correlated with respiratory dysfunction, abnormal somatosensory evoked potentials, and delayed motor development. Abnormal polysomnogram outcome was associated with reduced mental capacity. In light of the reported increased frequency of respiratory dysfunction in achondroplasia, these findings warrant careful attention and

Previous studies have looked at the potential for using visual feedback from isometric forces to illicit movement learning without actually moving. We investigate the potential of isometric movement training further by investigating the generalization of motor skills learned through isometric training to unconstrained movement. Using the Barret Upper-Extremity Robotic Trainer as both a position control device and a force clamp, participants engaged in an isometric reaching task with simulated movement arm dynamics feedback. The simulated movement was displayed on an augmented reality display t
