Syngnathia in Spectrum of Oromandibular Limb Hypogenesis Syndrome.

Syngnathia is a rare facial anomaly associated with neonatal problems, including a compromised airway, and the inability to take in solids and/or liquids. Syngnathia is included within the spectrum of oromandibular limb hypogenesis syndrome, an extremely rare condition characterized by varying degrees of congenital malformation involving the tongue, mandible, and limbs. In this report, we describe the case of a 41-day-old Caucasian female infant who was unable to open her mouth beginning at birth. The authors performed osteotomies to separate fused bone, and placed a bite block at the osteotom

Congenital oral synechia and ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital intraoral synechias are adhesions of intraoral structures involving soft tissue. These conditions and another anomaly called ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum, which is partial fusion of the eyelid margins by bands of tissue, are rarely reported in the literature. The association of both anomalies of the craniomaxillofacial region is an even more unusual finding. PURPOSE: This article adds more information to the literature by reporting a case of a neonate with a rare association of bilateral synechia between the jaws, fusion of buccal mucosa to the ridges and between

Classification of postural profiles among mouth-breathing children by learning vector quantization.

BACKGROUND: Mouth breathing is a chronic syndrome that may bring about postural changes. Finding characteristic patterns of changes occurring in the complex musculoskeletal system of mouth-breathing children has been a challenge. Learning vector quantization (LVQ) is an artificial neural network model that can be applied for this purpose. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to apply LVQ to determine the characteristic postural profiles shown by mouth-breathing children, in order to further understand abnormal posture among mouth breathers. METHODS: Postural training data on 52 child

A role for total alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement in Gardner syndrome.

Gardner syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that can present with craniomaxillofacial abnormalities. The identification of osteomas or craniomaxillofacial abnormalities can therefore serve as a marker of this condition, facilitating early referral and diagnosis. A 17-year-old female with GS was referred for the management of severe limited mouth opening, causing a major problem for routine endoscopy to monitor the gastrointestinal alterations of GS. Clinical and radiological evaluations showed multiple osteomas in the mandibular angle, condylar and coronoid regions bilaterally

Mental retardation, macrostomia and hyperpnoea syndrome.

A syndrome with the triad of abnormalities of mental retardation, wide mouth and intermittent overbreathing is described, which has all the features of the syndrome previously described by Pitt and Hopkins. Pitt and Hopkins published two cases that bear close resemblance to each other, each having an abnormal respiratory rhythm. Both had an unusually wide mouth and palate, thick fleshy lips, broad-beaked nose, finger clubbing and abnormal electroencephalograms. This paper discusses a client living in a hostel for intellectually handicapped people who has all these features.

Imaging of the oral cavity.

The oral cavity is a challenging area in head and neck imaging because of its complex anatomy and the numerous pathophysiologies that involve its contents. This challenge is further compounded by the ubiquitous artifacts that arise from the dental amalgam, which compromise image quality. In this article, the anatomy of the oral cavity is discussed in brief, followed by a description of the imaging technique and some common pathologic abnormalities.

Vertical Distraction for the Treatment of Congenital Syngnathia.

Congenital syngnathia is a very rare condition that presents with several unique challenges. There is no consensus on the best operative approach to manage this condition. Readhesion of surgically separated tissues is a relatively common occurrence. The authors propose that the use of a vertical distraction technique helps maintain adequate separation to prevent relapse of the bony fusion. Long-term follow-up will be required to follow mandibular growth and implications of this treatment option.

Holzgreve-Wagner-Rehder syndrome: Potter sequence associated with persistent buccopharyngeal membrane. A second observation.

Here we present a second example of the syndrome first reported by Holzgreve et al. [1984] in this journal, i.e., Potter sequence with persistent buccopharyngeal membrane type II, postaxial polydactyly, cleft palate, cardiac anomalies, intestinal nonfixation, and intrauterine growth retardation. This specific complex MCA syndrome is not associated with a detectable chromosome abnormality.

Home monitor follow-up of persistent apnea and bradycardia in preterm infants.

We reviewed our experience with home monitor observations of 83 preterm infants (postconceptional age, 36 to 44 weeks) who had persistent apnea, bradycardia, or cyanosis. Polygraphic recordings before discharge showed that 92% of these infants had cardiorespiratory abnormalities that included prolonged (greater than 20 s) apnea, excessive periodic breathing (greater than 15%), bradycardia (greater than 80 beats per minute), feeding hypoxemia, or elevated carbon dioxide values. At home, 70 infants had either no alarms or alarms that resolved spontaneously, while 13 (16%) had more serious episod

Postural disorders in mouth breathing children: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mouth breathing syndrome can cause sleep disturbances that compromise the performance of children in school. It might also cause postural abnormalities involving the head and cervical spine; however, the association between postural abnormalities and mouth breathing in children is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the methodological quality of studies and determine if there is an association between mouth breathing and postural disorders in children. METHODS: Databases comprised MEDLINE, CINAHL, PEDro, LILACS, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Registrar of Controlled Trials. Searches were

Persistent buccopharyngeal membrane with cleft palate. A case report.

A case of persistent buccopharyngeal membrane associated with cleft palate is reported. Persistence of the buccopharyngeal membrane results in partial fusion of the jaws and inability in opening and should be labeled as partial syngnathia. An association of this condition with cleft palate occurs as a part of the aglossia-adactylia and the popliteal pterygium syndromes. Though infrequently reported in the literature, presence of a persistent buccopharyngeal membrane associated with only cleft palate, without the other characteristics of the syndromes, does occur and should be recognized as a s

Onychomadesis in a 9-month-old boy with hand-foot-mouth disease.

BACKGROUND: Nail abnormalities in childhood are generally uncommon. Recently, onychomadesis is described as a rare, late complication of hand-foot-mouth disease, which is a viral illness commonly seen in the pediatric age group. It is therefore important to elucidate the presentation of this entity, especially in the context of the hand-foot-mouth disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of onychomadesis in a 9-month old Lebanese boy who presented to the emergency department with rapidly progressing nail changes involving all four extremities. These changes appeared few days after the hea
