Nose/mouth distribution of respiratory airflow in 'mouth breathing' children.

Oro-nasal distribution of respiratory airflow was determined in 120 'mouth breathing' children by a minimally invasive computer-assisted method that employed a modified CPAP nasal mask/pneumotach and a head-out body plethysmograph. Resulting measurements were reproducible but clinical assessments correlated poorly with these values. Airflow distribution was almost identical in inspiration and expiration. 100% nasal breathing was found over a wide range of nasal resistances, many subjects with lips apart. Overall, the nasal fraction was negatively correlated with resistance and it was increased…

Decreased chewing activity during mouth breathing.

This study examined the effect of mouth breathing on the strength and duration of vertical effect on the posterior teeth using related functional parameters during 3 min of gum chewing in 39 nasal breathers. A CO(2) sensor was placed over the mouth to detect expiratory airflow. When no airflow was detected from the mouth throughout the recording period, the subject was considered a nasal breather and enrolled in the study. Electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded during 3 min of gum chewing. The protocol was repeated with the nostrils occluded. The strength of the vertical effect was obta…

[Speech therapy assessment of mouth breathing].

The speech therapist investigates all elementary functions in mouth breathers (swallowing, breathing, chewing and articulatory practice). Special interest is drawn to head and body postures in the set up of the craniofacial morphology.

[Non-obstructive etiology of mouth breathing].

Besides nose obstruction other etiological factors can be advanced to explain the development of oral respiration: malformation of the face (Binder's syndrome, Bimler's microrhinodysplasia, Apert's and Crouzon's syndrome); alterations or deviations of the tongue (Robin's syndrome, macroglossia, ankyloglossia); lip closure problems.

Proposal for a screening questionnaire for detecting habitual mouth breathing, based on a mouth-breathing habit score.

BACKGROUND: When mouth breathing becomes habitual, it can cause sleep disorders and abnormal maxillofacial growth, thus early detection of habitual mouth breathing is important. We created a questionnaire for early detection of habitual mouth breathing using a score based on a spectrum of factors found to be characteristic of mouth breathers. METHODS: First, a draft 50-question questionnaire was given to 101 random dental clinic patients, classified by dental professionals into habitual mouth breathers (n = 28) and nose breathers (n = 73). The 10 questions that significantly differentiated mo…

Prevalence of mouth breathing among children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of mouth breathing among children aged 3 to 9 years living in the urban districts of the town of Abaeté, MG, Brazil. METHODS: This study assesses a representative, randomized sample of the town's population (23,596 inhabitants). Children were selected by lots according to a random number table until 370 had been enrolled; this number had been determined by statistical calculation. A protocol for anamnesis and clinical assessment of the patients was specially developed for this project, since no preexisting instruments could be found in the literature tha…

Dentofacial morphology of mouth breathing children.

The relationship between dentofacial morphology and respiration has been debated and investigated from various approaches. The aim of this s … ation to the cranial base in the mouth breathers; 2) the SNGoGn and NSGn angles were greater in the mouth breathing group; 3) incisor inclination in both jaws and the interincisal angle were not different between groups. There was no statistically significant difference in the maxillary and mandibular molar heights between the nose breathers and mouth breathers.

Clinical and Cephalometric Correlation between Mouth-breathing and Nasal-breathing Children.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric sleep-disordered breathing encompasses conditions from upper airway resistance syndrome to obstructive sleep apnea. Mouth-breathing in children causes severe dentoalveolar deformities. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy exacerbates mouth-breathing, greatly influencing dentofacial development. Early detection of mouth-breathing habit is crucial to prevent the development of malocclusion. Mouth-breathing also alters the salivary pH of the saliva and has an impact on gingival health. AIM: The study aims to compare and correlate the clinical and cephalometric parameters between na

Comparison of cephalometric patterns in mouth breathing and nose breathing children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare cephalometric values between nasal and oral breathing children and to measure the upper and … The radiographs were analyzed and a cephalometric tracing was performed on each one. RESULTS: The mouth breathing children showed a more retruded mandible (SNB), and a greater inclination of the mandibular plane (NS-Go Gn) and occlusal plane (NS-O Pl.), than the nose breathing children (P<0.05). The mouth breathing group also had a higher frequency of having th …
