There is a vast spectrum of pathology that afflicts the floor of mouth in children. These span inflammatory conditions, vascular malformations, developmental anomalies, benign tumors and malignancies. While this area is readily evaluated on clinical exam, imaging is often performed to better characterize the disorder prior to management. The imaging modalities most frequently utilized are US, CT and MR. The purpose of this article is to describe the primary conditions that occur in this location in children so that radiologists may provide an appropriate differential diagnosis. These include r

OBJECTIVES: We report the common surgical approaches, incidence of sinus tracts, and recurrence rates of floor of mouth dysontogenic (epidermoid, dermoid, and teratoid) cysts in the pediatric population.
METHODS: Data were derived from PubMed, Medline, Embase, Google Scholar, and manual searches. Three cases from the senior author's (J.P.M.) practice were included. All English-language studies consisting of floor of mouth dysontogenic cysts were included. Case reports of tongue dysontogenic cysts, mandibular dysontogenic cysts, maxillary dysontogenic cysts, and dysontogenic cysts in the neck

We treated two patients requiring nasolabial flap reconstruction. The first patient was a 75-year-old man with mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the left-side floor of the mouth; requiring resection of the floor of the mouth, partial mandibulectomy, and left supraomohyoid neck dissection. The second patient was a 74-year-old man with recurrent acinic cell carcinoma in the anterior oral floor infiltrating as far as the mandible. This patient required wide excision of the anterior part of the oral cavity, including amputation of the mandible. After tumor resection, both cases had a nasolabial flap rec

Tonsillectomy is one of the most common operations performed by otolaryngologists. Sore throat, otalgia, fever, dehydration, uvular edema, and tonsillar hemorrhage are common complications. Hematoma of the mouth floor, an unusual complication, was reported. A 21-year-old man presented with a soft, dark-red swelling of the mouth floor three days after undergoing tonsillectomy. The hematoma of the mouth floor subsided spontaneously 2 weeks later. The complication in this case was most likely caused by the blood vessel insult, which resulted from suspension of the mouth with tongue retraction dur…

Intra-oral lipoma is a well-known entity, but lipomatous tumors including salivary gland tissue containing clustered or peripherally located ducts and acinar cells are uncommon. They are a newly recognized entity of salivary gland lipoma, designated sialolipoma. We describe a case of sialolipoma arising in the floor of the mouth presenting with apparently normal salivary gland tissue, as demonstrated by both histologic and immunohistochemical findings, in a 67-year-old female. Complete surgical removal of the tumor with preservation of the sublingual gland was implemented after a careful exami

Swelling of the floor of the mouth is sometime difficult to diagnose clinically. Lithiasis and neoplasm are the most frequent causes of intraoral swelling. Also after plain radiology and computed tomography the diagnosis is often dubious. A case of swelling of the floor of the mouth due to an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the sublingual gland is reported.

Haemangiopericytoma of the floor of the mouth with metastases to the lumbar spine in a 23-year-old black woman is described. She represents the 36th patient with oral cavity haemangiopericytoma and the 4th with a floor of mouth lesion. The aggressive behaviour of haemangiopericytoma and its resistance to all forms of recommended treatment was shown in this patient.

After discussing the changing incidence and known difficulties in the management of mouth floor cancer, reasons are given for the increased use of surgery in treating the more extensive lesions. The significance of the topographic anatomy, patterns of lymph drainage and surgical pathology is emphasized. Principles of treatment, indications and types of operation are discussed for the main lesions encountered. Following this the preparation of patients for surgery, the methods of anaesthesia and certain technical details of surgical treatment are given. The importance of after-care and particul…

The patient was a man in his 60s with the gradually increasing mass in his mouth. A well-defined, elastic soft mass with a major diameter of 60 mm was found on the right floor of mouth. The magnetic resonance imaging findings showed a well-defined mass with high signal on both T1 and T2-weighted image in the right sublingual space. The mass was slightly heterogeneous inside and had a septum-like appearance. The tumor was resected with care not to damage the capsule. Histopathological findings showed mature adipocytes, spindle-shaped cells, and collagenous components. Spindle cells were CD34-po

Sodium hydroxide or caustic soda is a corrosive agent that can cause extensive damage to the oral mucosa, lips, and tongue when ingested either accidentally or intentionally. These injuries include microstomia, shallow vestibule, ankyloglossia, speech impairment, loss of teeth and impairment in facial expression. In the present article, we report a unique case of tongue adhesion to the mouth floor and its surgical management in a 66-year-old female patient, who had a history of caustic soda ingestion.
