Fine needle aspiration diagnosis of ipsilateral synchronous neoplasm - mucoepidermoid carcinoma with warthin tumor in parotid gland.

Warthin tumor (WT) owing to its heterogeneous appearance, biological behavior and multicentricity poses a diagnostic challenge to cytologists worldwide. We report a rare double pathology of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) with WT which was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA). Cytological smears revealed sheets of epithelial cells and small clusters of squamous cells in a background of mucoid material along with a few small groups and scattered oncocytic cells and inflammatory cells (mainly lymphocytes). In view of the cytological findings various differentials such as oncocytic lesions, b

Tongue base minor salivary gland tumor: report of a case with mucoepidermoid and acinous cell components.

A case of a large (5.5 cm), multilobulated, mucosa-covered, minor salivary gland tumor of the base of the tongue that displayed morphologic features of both a mucoepidermoid carcinoma and an acinous cell tumor is described. Generally, each of these salivary gland tumors occurs only rarely at this site. A tumor with both these elements has not previously been reported.

Prognostic Role of Unconventional Tumor Site of Origin in Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: A Comprehensive Analysis Using the SEER Database.

PURPOSE: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant salivary gland tumor, yet prognosis may vary substantially by tumor site. While prior studies emphasized head and neck sites, the impact of anatomic location across both conventional (major and minor salivary gland) and unconventional sites remains poorly defined. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 21 database (2000–2022), we identified adults with histologically confirmed MEC. Demographic, clinicopathologic, treatment, and survival patterns were compared across major anatomic site groups. C

A diagnostic pitfall: nodular tumor-like squamous metaplasia with Hashimoto's thyroiditis mimicking a sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia.

Nodular tumor-like squamous metaplasia with Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an exceptional, benign condition presenting diagnostic difficulties for the pathologist. The main differential diagnosis is a sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma (SMC) with eosinophilia. One case arising in a 50-year-old Caucasian man is reported. Histologically, the nodule consisted of large nests of squamous cells surrounded by connective tissue in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. We present the different histological criteria, allowing us to eliminate an SMC and other neoplastic tumors of the thyroid. The etiology of this tumor-

Prevalence of mucoepidermoid carcinoma among intraoral minor salivary gland tumors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This study aimed to synthetize and critically appraise available evidence regarding mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) prevalence among intraoral minor salivary gland tumors (MiSGT). Five main electronic databases and three grey literature databases were searched. The risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. Proportion meta-analyses were performed. From 1321 studies identified, 82 were included in qualitative synthesis and 80 in meta-analyses. Sixteen were classified as high, 33 as moderate, and 33 as low

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Gallbladder: A Case-Based Study of an Extremely Rare Tumor Highlighting the Role of Immunohistochemical Profiling.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is rarely reported in the hepatobiliary system. In this article, we detail the first case of MEC arising from the gallbladder, presenting in a 50-year-old male. Imaging and gross examination showed a large mass in the gallbladder fossa infiltrating the liver. This microscopically displayed the classical morphology of MEC, which was confirmed on dual immunostain for p63 and CK7 and histochemical staining for mucin. MUC and p53 immunoexpression patterns suggested a poor prognosis. The patient succumbed to the disease with liver metastasis within 6 months. The cytom

Preliminary diagnostic criteria for distinguishing metaplastic Warthin tumors from mucoepidermoid carcinomas rich in lymphoid stroma.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical profiles of unconventional Warthin tumors and mucoepidermoid carcinomas. METHODS: Eleven low-grade salivary gland tumors with Warthin-like features were analyzed. Group A (n=6) showed a double-layered oncocytic epithelium in less than 50% of the epithelial cells, whereas Group B (n=5) lacked this feature. Additionally, five conventional Warthin tumors and ten conventional mucoepidermoid carcinomas were analyzed as reference groups. Immunohistochemical staining was performed for cytokeratins (types 5/6, 7, a

A mismatch of tumor grade and biologic behaviour in a rare case of Sclerosing Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of Parotid - with review of literature.

Although mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common primary malignancy of the salivary glands, the sclerosing morphologic variant of this tumor is extremely rare and only 26 cases have been reported till date in the english literature. This report describes a case involving a 35-year-old female with an intermediate-grade sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of parotid gland and we review the litreture. Immunohitochemical markers, Her-2/neu and MIB-1 evaluated to help predict the clinical outcome and to determine whether an association exists between the histologic grade and immunohistochemical

Synchronous ipsilateral Warthin tumor encased by a separate mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report and review of the literature.

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is a cost effective and low morbidity procedure in the initial assessment of salivary gland tumors. However, cytological assessment of ipsilateral synchronous tumors (which make up less than 0.3% of all salivary gland neoplasms) may pose diagnostic challenges. Therefore, a wholesome approach, including FNA with clinical and radiological correlation, is of utmost importance. Here, we report a unique case of Warthin tumor encased by a separate high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma that was first diagnosed on FNA. Another striking feature seen was the presence of chroni

Successful complete tumor resection for pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma by thoracoscopic right upper lobectomy with intraoperative bronchoscopy: A pediatric case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma presents as an exophytic endobronchial mass that induces obstructive symptoms often followed by distal collapse atelectasis of the lung parenchyma. CASE PRESENTATION: A six-year-old girl had recurrent bacterial pneumonia and atelectasis of the right upper lobe. Computed tomography revealed a 30-mm mass in the anterior segment of the right upper lobe with an obstructed trachea and peripheral atelectasis. A minor salivary gland tumor was suspected, so thoracoscopic right upper lobectomy (RUL) was performed. Intraoperative bronchoscopy showed

High tumor grade in salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinomas and loss of expression of transforming growth factor beta receptor type II.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of salivary glands is a malignant, locally aggressive neoplasm with metastatic potential. The clinical course is usually dependent on histology; however, low-grade carcinomas can result in metastases and tumor-related death. Transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) is a potent cytokine that affects growth inhibition of various cells and stimulates extracellular matrix production and angiogenesis. Loss of TGF-beta receptor type II (TGF-beta RII) expression has been related to resistance of TGF-beta1-mediated growth control and tumor progression. In

Mucoepidermoid tumor of the parotid gland showing a translocation (3;8)(p21;q12) and a deletion (5)(q22) as sole chromosome abnormalities.

The cytogenetic findings in a mucoepidermoid tumor of the parotid gland are described. In addition to a t(3;8)(p21;q12), all cells analyzed showed a deletion of part of the long arm of chromosome 5. Although the typical translocation of benign pleomorphic adenomas was found, histologic examination did not show remnants of a pleomorphic adenoma. Nevertheless, we assumed that the malignant tumor most likely arose in a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma. As a mechanism for malignant transformation, the loss of a suppressor gene located on the long arm of chromosome 5 is discussed.

Imaging-Endoscopy Discordance in Occult Tonsillar Tumors: Diagnostic Challenges of Submucosal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma-A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background and Clinical Significance: Cervical lymphadenopathy with an occult primary tumor represents a common yet diagnostically challenging clinical scenario in head and neck oncology. While endoscopic evaluation is typically relied upon for tumor localization, submucosal lesions may remain undetected. Case Presentation: We report a 41-year-old woman presenting with an isolated right level II neck mass without constitutional symptoms. Initial fiberscopic examination revealed no mucosal abnormalities; however, contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated asymmetric enlargement of the r

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma-a rare salivary gland-type tumor of the breast: are we dealing with primary or secondary?-a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland-like tumors are extremely unusual in the breast, and their histology is very similar to primary salivary gland neoplasms. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), a common salivary gland tumor, displays an infrequent occurrence in the breast, accounting for a mere 0.2-0.3% incidence. Given its rarity, it is critical to accurately distinguish it from metastatic cases before diagnosing it as a primary breast MEC for appropriate treatment. Currently, there is no consensus on the treatment of MEC, and there is a paucity of literature highlighting the ideal treatment modality, esp

Fine-Needle Aspiration of Salivary Gland Tumors With Low-Grade Oncocytic Features: Focusing on Oncocytoma Versus Oncocytic Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) with low-grade oncocytic features are diagnostically challenging due to the substantial morphologic overlap between benign oncocytic tumors and their malignant mimickers. This study evaluates the diagnostic discriminators, performance, and risk of malignancy of these lesions using the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed salivary gland FNA cases (2021-2025) categorized as Milan IVa: Benign neoplasm with oncocytic features, including Warthin tumor and oncocytoma/nodular onc

A case of infarcted Warthin tumor misdiagnosed as Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma: diagnosis confirmed by MAML2 rearrangement with case report and literature review.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a common malignant neoplasm of the parotid gland. A rare pathological subtype, Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma, closely resembles infarcted Warthin tumor in clinical presentation and histopathological features, and contributes to a high-risk of misdiagnosis. Therefore, extensive experience in morphological diagnosis by pathologists and molecular testing results are crucial for accurate diagnosis. We report a case of infarcted Warthin tumor initially misdiagnosed as Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The diagnosis was subsequently corrected based on molecul
