UNLABELLED: Multitasking: An Asset or a "Time Trap"? Overview of Media Multitasking in Children and Adolescents Abstract.
OBJECTIVE: The development of modern digital media, especially smartphones, has contributed to a fundamental change in the leisure activities and communication practices of adolescents. Besides the technical possibilities, the amount of multitasking, i.e., the parallel use of several media alone or in combination with nonmedia activities, has gained in importance. This article addresses the bidirectional relationships between multitasking and cognitive processes, consequen

Simultanagnosia, an impairment in simultaneous object perception, has been attributed to deficits in visual attention and, specifically, to processing speed. Increasing visual attention deficits manifest over the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD), where the first changes are present already in its symptomatic predementia phase: amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). In this study, we examined whether patients with aMCI due to AD show simultaneous object perception deficits and whether and how these deficits relate to visual attention. Sixteen AD patients with aMCI and 16 age-, gender-, an

Human listeners can focus on one speech stream out of several concurrent ones. The present study aimed to assess the whole-brain functional networks underlying a) the process of focusing attention on a single speech stream vs. dividing attention between two streams and 2) speech processing on different time-scales and depth. Two spoken narratives were presented simultaneously while listeners were instructed to a) track and memorize the contents of a speech stream and b) detect the presence of numerals or syntactic violations in the same ("focused attended condition") or in the parallel stream

Pathogenesis-based diagnosis is a key step to prevent and control lumbar neural foraminal stenosis (LNFS). It conducts both early diagnosis and comprehensive assessment by drawing crucial pathological links between pathogenic factors and LNFS. Automated pathogenesis-based diagnosis would simultaneously localize and grade multiple spinal organs (neural foramina, vertebrae, intervertebral discs) to diagnose LNFS and discover pathogenic factors. The automated way facilitates planning optimal therapeutic schedules and relieving clinicians from laborious workloads. However, no successful work has b

The multitasking central pattern generator (CPG) that drives consummatory feeding behaviors of Aplysia can produce ingestive, egestive, and intermediate motor programs. External stimuli trigger the programs but, remarkably, do not directly specify which type of program is produced. Rather, recent work has proposed, the type of program is determined by the internal network state of the CPG that has developed in response to the previous history of the stimulation. Here we have tested a key prediction of this network-state hypothesis. If the network state has a real existence and governs real fun

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) was first discovered in professional boxers after they exhibited memory impairments, mood and behavioral changes after years of boxing. However, there is now a growing acceptance that CTE can develop in athletes of other sports due to the repetitive head trauma they receive. We present a case of a middle-aged male who presented with worsening memory, poor concentration, and behavioral changes for a year. On further cognitive testing, it was revealed that he had difficulties with short-term memory and processing speed as well as difficulties in organizing

With the development of smart classrooms and digital learning platforms, multimodal learning behavior data provide a new sensing basis for understanding students' cognitive states and psychological risk warnings. However, existing educational data mining methods mainly focus on performance prediction, dropout warning, or surface-level emotion recognition, while continuous and interpretable modeling of deeper cognitive biases and related psychological risks remains insufficient. To address this issue, we propose MLBS-Net, a multimodal learning behavior sensing network for teaching feedback that

BACKGROUND: Surgeons traditionally aim to reduce mistakes in healthcare through repeated training and advancement of surgical technology. Recently, performance-enhancing interventions such as neurostimulation are emerging which may offset errors in surgical practice.
METHODS: Use of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS), a novel neuroenhancement technique that has been applied to surgeons to improve surgical technical performance, was reviewed. Evidence supporting tDCS improvements in motor and cognitive performance outside of the field of surgery was assessed and correlated with eme

OBJECTIVES: Adults with "hearing loss" have an increased falls risks. There may be an association between hearing impairment and walking performance under dual-task (DT) and triple-task (TT) conditions. The aim of this study was to identify DT and TT effects on walking speed, step length, and cadence in adults with hearing impairment, previous falls, and physical limitations.
DESIGN: The observational study included 73 community-dwelling older people seeking audiology services. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, previous falls, fear of falling, physical limitations, and

Detecting cognitive states and impairments through EEG signals is crucial for applications in aviation and medicine and has broad applications in the field of human-machine interaction. However, existing methods often fail to capture the fine-grained neural dynamics of critical brain processes due to limited temporal resolution and inadequate signal decomposition techniques. To address this, we introduce the Spectral Intensity Stability (SIS) algorithm, a novel technique that analyzes the stability and competition of dominant brain frequency oscillations across granular timescales (≈4 ms). P-n heterostructures have been widely recognized as an effective strategy for enhancing the sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors. However, the regulatory mechanism underlying the NiO-ZnO composite ratio and its influence on gas sensing and recognition performance remains poorly understood. In this work, seven NiO-ZnO-based gas sensors with systematically varied molar ratios were designed and fabricated, followed by extensive sensing experiments toward six representative volatile organic compounds. The sensors were comprehensively evaluated in terms of response character

When older adults step over obstacles during multitasking, their performance is impaired; the impairment results from central and/or sensory interference. The purpose was to determine if sensory interference alters performance under low levels of cognitive, temporal, and gait demand, and if the change in performance is different for younger versus older adults. Participants included 17 younger adults (20.9±1.9 years) and 14 older adults (69.7±5.4 years). The concurrent task was a single, simple reaction time (RT) task: depress button in response to light cue. The gait task was stepping over an

The colloquial expression "brain rot" is increasingly used to describe attentional fragmentation, cognitive fatigue, motivational blunting, and a sense of mental "slowness" after prolonged engagement with high-intensity digital media. In this semi-structured narrative review, we use the term as a heuristic bridge concept rather than a formal diagnosis and examine whether sleep and circadian mechanisms provide a biologically coherent account of these complaints. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched through March 2026, with emphasis on chronobiology, sleep deprivation/restriction, digital med

Many late-stage chronic Lyme disease clinical findings are neuropsychiatric. A total clinical assessment is critical in diagnosis, especially since controversy surrounds the reliability of laboratory testing. The clinical findings of one hundred Lyme disease patients with chronic neuropsychiatric symptoms were entered into a database. The prevalence of each clinical finding pre-infection and post-infection was compared and calculated within the 95% confidence interval. Patients had minimal symptoms pre-infection, but a high post-infection prevalence of a broad spectrum of acquired multisystem

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological studies suggest that the ability to compensate for the presence of spatial neglect highly depends on the attentional resources a patient can rely on. The present research aimed to study neglect in situations where attentional resources are limited due to multitasking.
METHOD: We examined two patients more than 3 years after a right-hemispheric stroke. Both had received neuropsychological rehabilitation for left neglect and did not show any impairment in standard tests. We used a dual-task paradigm combining a peripheral target detection task with a central shape

The Inferior Fronto-Occipital fascicle (IFOF) is a multitasking white matter (WM) bundle bridging frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobe. Many papers describe its role in the physiology of language, attention and affective behavior but its anatomical components and cortical terminations remain unclear. We analyze the surgical anatomy of the IFOF in the light of our experience with awake surgery, anatomical dissection on 10 human adult hemispheres (Klingler method) and literature review. Dissecting the specimens from lateral to medial we can describe 3 segments: a vertical segment that

Side-locked headache is commonly regarded as a warning sign for secondary intracranial pathology; however, its musculoskeletal causes may be underrecognized. We report a series of seven patients with strictly unilateral headache consistently and temporally associated with the habitual clamping of a mobile phone between the neck and shoulder during hands-free multitasking. The headache was nonthrobbing, lacked migrainous or cranial autonomic features, and was reproducible with cervical palpation or sustained neck movements. Neurological examination and neuroimaging were normal in all cases. Cer

Individuals who received anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgeries demonstrated lower extremity movement asymmetries. The purpose of this study was to determine if psychological impairment was a contributor to lower extremity movement asymmetries in walking for individuals who received ACL reconstruction surgeries. Three-dimensional videographic and force plate data were collected for 25 males after unilateral ACL reconstruction performing walking without (single-task condition) and with the concurrent cognitive task (dual-task condition). Both uninjured and injured legs had si

The debate on the neural basis of multitasking costs evolves around neural overlap between concurrently performed tasks. Recent evidence suggests that training-related reductions in representational overlap in fronto-parietal brain regions predict multitasking improvements. Cognitive theories assume that overlap of task representations may lead to unintended information exchange between tasks (i.e., crosstalk). Modality-based crosstalk was suggested as a source for multitasking costs in multisensory settings. Robust findings of increased costs for certain modality mappings may be explained by
