BACKGROUND: The isokinetic dynamometer is the "gold standard" equipment for assessing muscle strength after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR); however, its high cost limits its use in clinical practice. The hand-held dynamometer (HHD) and performance-based tests are alternative methods.
HYPOTHESIS: The single leg bridge test (SLBT) and HHD are reliable and valid for assessing knee flexor strength compared with isokinetic dynamometer and knee-specific patient-reported outcomes after ACLR.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4.
METHODS: A total of 127

Muscle strength assessment is important in predicting clinical and functional outcomes in many disorders. Manual muscle testing, although commonly used, offers suboptimal accuracy and reliability. Isokinetic dynamometers (IKDs) have excellent accuracy and reliability; but are bulky and expensive, offering limited accessibility. This study aimed to design a portable dynamometer that is accessible, accurate and reliable, and to validate the device in a general population. The portable articulated dynamometry system (PADS) is a portable device with an embedded high-precision load cell, designed t

BACKGROUND: Eccentric maximum strength and explosive force production of the hamstrings are crucial for performance in many sports. Tensiomyography (TMG has been shown to be a valuable tool to assess muscle contractility and function. For eccentric force production, neural activation has been proposed to be the predominant influencing factor. Nevertheless, high muscle fiber tension has to be generated. Therefore, this study aims to test the hypothesis that eccentric force production does not correlate with muscle contractility measured by TMG.
METHODS: Twenty-three physical active males (26.0

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a common knee complaint affecting diverse populations both acutely and chronically. Quadriceps muscle weakness is one possible aetiology, but current devices for measuring muscle strength (isokinetic dynamometer [ID] and hand-held dynamometers [HHD]) are frequently too expensive (e.g., ID) or lack reliability (e.g., HHD) for practitioners, especially in under-resourced settings. There is a need to evaluate a low-cost device to manage rehabilitation of people with PFP.
METHODS: Isometric quadriceps strength of participants aged 18-35 years (total [n = 3

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the minimum pinch force applied during object carrying and physical fatigue in patients with fibromyalgia. For this purpose, the study evaluated the association between the minimum and maximum pinch forces exerted while carrying a weight and both isokinetic muscle strength and the isokinetic fatigue index.
METHODS: One hundred eight (54 FMS/54 healthy) women participated. Pinch force was measured with a force sensor, and wrist flexor/extensor strength and fatigue index were evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer at 180°/s.

Muscle strength measurement is important when evaluating the degree of impairment in patients with nerve injury. However, accurate and objective evaluation may be difficult in patients with severe pain or those who intentionally try to avoid full exertion. We investigated the usefulness of the affected-to-unaffected side electrophysiological parameter ratios as a measure of objective ankle dorsiflexion (ADF) strength in patients with unilateral fibular nerve injury (FNI). ADF strength was measured in patients with FNI via handheld dynamometer and manual muscle test (MMT). Fibular nerve compoun

BACKGROUND: While new therapies are continuously introduced to treat muscular dystrophy, current assessment tests are challenging to quantify, cannot be used in non-ambulatory patients, or can de-motivate pediatric patients. We developed a simple, engaging, upper-limb assessment tool that measures muscle strength and fatigue in children, including children with muscular dystrophy. The device is a bio-feedback grip sensor that motivates children to complete maximal and fatiguing grip protocols through a game-based interface.
METHODS: To determine if the new system provided the same maximum gri

The purposes of this study were to test whether an examiner's strength may affect the validity of the knee muscle strength measurements using a hand-held dynamometer (HHD) and whether enhancing the forces applied by an examiner using a resistance-enhanced dynamometer (RED) would improve measurement validity. Twenty-five young male volunteers (mean [±SD] age: 22.5 ± 1.7 years) without a history of injury to the test limb and 6 male and 6 female experienced examiners participated in this study. Maximum resisting forces of the knee flexors and extensors were measured using RED, HHD, and a dynamom

INTRODUCTION: Ulcer formation poses a serious clinical problem and has been associated with muscle function and tissue loss in diabetic feet and increased plantar peak pressures during walking. Reduced intrinsic and extrinsic foot muscle strength has been considered to increase the plantar peak pressure at the most affected metatarsal region. We aimed to investigate if a targeted strength training of the toe flexor muscles 1) enhances muscle strength and volume in the diabetic foot, and 2) improves plantar pressure distribution during walking in diabetic patients.

Muscle power is a better indicator of musculoskeletal health and functional capacity than muscle strength. The Load-Velocity (L-V) relationship provides a method for assessing muscle function during dynamic multi-joint movements, making it valuable for identifying age-related neuromuscular decline. This study aimed to examine the relationship between variables derived from the L-V relationship (L0, V0, and Aline) obtained during the loaded sit-to-stand test and various muscle performance indices, including knee extension peak force (KEPF) and various muscle quality indices (MQI). Strength is a primary and modifiable contributor to performance, injury risk, and rehabilitative success. The gold standard measure of strength is the isokinetic dynamometer, providing the clinician with the opportunity to manipulate contraction modality, range, and speed about a joint. However, criticism has highlighted a lack of functional relevance, with arbitrary selection of speed across the full range. To better understand function, biomechanical analysis of movement can inform a bespoke isokinetic data collection protocol. In this case, we use walking gait, a function goal for daily liv

It has been suggested that the accuracy of manual muscle testing is dependent on examiner strength. Our purpose was to relate male and female clinicians' upper extremity strength to their ability to challenge the quadriceps and detect weakness in patients using manual muscle testing. Quadriceps muscles of seven men and 12 women with postpoliomyelitis were tested manually by a male and female clinician while forces were recorded with a hand-held dynamometer. Patients' maximal isometric knee extension force was recorded with a Lido dynamometer and clinicians' maximal vertical push force was reco

BACKGROUND: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) athletes can be divided into two combat styles: pass fighters (PFs) and guard fighters (GFs). Flexibility of the posterior chain muscles is highly necessary in these athletes, especially in GFs. On the other hand, isometric strength of the trunk extensors is required in PFs. Handgrip strength is important in holding the kimono of the opponent, and symmetrical lower-limb strength is important for the prevention of injuries due to the overload caused by training.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical profiles of BJJ athletes with d
