ANATOMICAL STUDY OF THE MUSCULOCUTANEOUS NERVE IN RELATION TO THE CORACOID PROCESS.

OBJECTIVE: The authors performed an anatomical study on the path of the musculocutaneous nerve by dissecting 20 shoulders from 10 fresh adult cadavers. METHOD: The distance from the lower edge of the coracoid process to the point of penetration of the most proximal branch of the musculocutaneous nerve in the coracobrachialis muscle was measured and named the base. Starting from the inferomedial edge of the coracoid process, a second measurement was made to the point at which the lateral fascicle of the brachial plexus crossed the subclavius muscle, and was named the height. The third measurem

Isolated musculocutaneous nerve injury in a motorcyclist - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated musculocutaneous nerve injuries occur rarely due to their anatomical location. We present our patient with a musculocutaneous nerve injury in a motorcyclist. CASE: The patient was initially treated for a motorcycle accident. Further examination of the patient revealed impaired elbow flexion and numbness of the lateral forearm. Electromyography confirmed impaired function of the musculocutaneous nerve. After 3 months, the patient's condition did not show any improvement, neither electromyography confirmed recovery of the nerve activity, so surgical treatment was planned.

The course and variations of the branches of the musculocutaneous nerve in human fetuses.

The course and branches of the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) were dissected in 140 human fetal arms. The MCN entered the superior, middle, and inferior part of coracobrachialis in 43%, 37%, and 17% of arms, respectively, and the remaining 3% did not pierce coracobrachialis. The motor branches to biceps were classified as follows: Type 1 (83.6%): a single branch that bifurcated to supply the two heads of biceps; Type 2 (14.3%): two separate branches each innervating one head of biceps; Type 3 (2.1%): a single branch that bifurcated to supply each head of biceps plus an additional branch that inn

[Isolated truncular paralysis of the musculocutaneous nerve of the upper limb].

Isolated palsy of the musculocutaneous nerve, terminal branch of the lateral cord of the brachial plexus, is rare. It is responsible for sensory loss of the distal forearm and weakness of elbow flexion. It occurs after shoulder or clavicle surgery, trauma (fracture, dislocation, blows on the shoulder), violent exercice or extension of the forearm, prolonged positioning of the shoulder in extension-abduction-external rotation and phlebotomy. Different mechanisms such as stretching, compression or direct nerve injury are encountered. We report 5 cases with isolated musculocutaneous nerve palsy,

The musculocutaneous nerve and its branches to the biceps and brachialis muscles.

The musculocutaneous nerve and its motor branches to the biceps and brachialis were dissected and studied under the operating microscope in 24 fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens. The motor branch to the biceps exits from the musculocutaneous nerve at 119 mm distal to the coracoid process. Anatomic variations were seen in the innervation of the two heads of the biceps. A common primary motor branch that bifurcates to supply the two heads was seen in 20 specimens (type I). Two specimens were observed to have two separate primary branches originating from the main musculocutaneous nerve trunk to in

Unilateral Absence of Musculocutaneous Nerve and Unusual Supply of Median Nerve - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomical variations of the brachial plexus and its branches are frequently encountered. Absent musculocutaneous nerve with complete or partial takeover of function by median nerve is known. Such variation creates confusion in the interpretation of a clinical or electro diagnostic test for evaluation of peripheral nerve injury. METHODS: Institutional guidelines for the use of human cadaver were followed. Routine dissection of the upper limbs for undergraduate medical teaching was performed in a 67-years-old male cadaver following standard methods. Relevant gross anatomical feat

Transfer of pectoral nerves to the musculocutaneous nerve in obstetric upper brachial plexus palsy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the results of transfer of pectoral nerves to the musculocutaneous nerve for treatment of obstetric brachial palsy. METHODS: In 25 cases of obstetric brachial palsy (20 after breech deliveries), branches of the pectoral nerve plexus were transferred directly to the musculocutaneous nerve. For all patients, the nerve transfer was part of an extended brachial plexus reconstruction. Results were tested both clinically and with the Mallet scale, at a mean follow-up time of 70 months (standard deviation, 34.3 mo). RESULTS: There were two complete failures, which were att

Surgical reconstruction of the musculocutaneous nerve in traumatic brachial plexus injuries.

Over the last 16 years, 345 surgical reconstructions of the brachial plexus were performed using nerve grafting or neurotization techniques in the Neurosurgical Department at the Nordstadt Hospital, Hannover, Germany. Sixty-five patients underwent graft placement between the C-5 and C-6 root and the musculocutaneous nerve to restore the flexion of the arm. A retrospective study was conducted, including statistical evaluation of the following pre- and intraoperative parameters in 54 patients: 1) time interval between injury and surgery; 2) choice of the donor nerve (C-5 or C-6 root); and 3) len

[Anatomical bases of operative lesions of the musculocutaneous nerve in surgery of the shoulder].

The operative management by coracoid graft transfers in the recurrent dislocations of the shoulder and the frequent shoulder arthroscopies could be the source of lesions to the musculocutaneous nerve. Although rarely mentioned in articles, these complications certainly exist. The precise topography of this nerve does not seem to be well known by surgeons. Consequently, we returned to the anatomic study of the nerve with its variations and their relationship to the external terminal anomalies of the brachial plexus.

[Role of musculocutaneous nerve in the relationship between "chutse" acupoint and heart].

Ligating fourty eight rabbits left ventricular branch of coronary artery made model of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with indices of ECG and size of AMI. They were divided at random into four groups: "Chutse" acupoint group, cutting musculocutaneous nerve of "Chutse" acupoint group, cutting musculoutaneous nerve group, control group. Results showed that there is no role in laser acupuncture at "Chutse" acupoint for reducing myocardial injury and size of AMI after cutting musculocutaneous nerve of "Chutse" acupoint. It is illustrated that the musculocutaneous nerve might play an important r

The experimental research of nerve fibers compensation amplification innervation of ulnar nerve and musculocutaneous nerve in rhesus monkeys.

This experiment intended to authenticate the compensation and amplification effect of regenerated nerve fibers after nerve injury in primate. The Rhesus Monkeys right ulnar nerves and musculocutaneous nerves were chosed. The proximal impaired ulnar nerve as the proximal end and the distal impaired ulnar nerve musculocutaneous nerve as the distal ends. The ulnar nerve proximal stump fibers can grow into both the ulnar nerve distal stump and the musculocutaneus nerve at the same time and established two different electrophysiological conduction passageway. There exist nerve fibers compensation a

Unveiling the Uncommon: Bilateral Absence of Musculocutaneous Nerve in Cadaveric Examination.

The brachial plexus is a network of nerves crucial to the innervation of the upper limb. The anatomy of the brachial plexus has been thought to be consistent across persons and is studied as such. Instances of deviations of this plexus pose significant challenges in both clinical diagnosis and surgical interventions. The musculocutaneous nerve, originating from the lateral cord of the brachial plexus, allows for movement of key muscles of the arm and cutaneous sensation to the forearm. Our present case reveals a unique bilateral absence of the musculocutaneous nerve. We aim to elucidate the an

Anatomy of branches of the musculocutaneous nerve to the biceps and brachialis in human fetuses.

Forty upper limbs (20 right and 20 left) of spontaneously aborted human fetuses were examined to determine the branching patterns of the musculocutaneous nerve. The mean age of the fetuses was 21.3 weeks. We identified three branching patterns of the musculocutaneous nerve to the biceps muscle. Type I with a single primary branch occurred in 47.5% of cases. Type II with two primary branches each to a separate head of the biceps muscle was observed in 42.5% of cases. Type III consisted of two primary branches, the proximal dividing into two branches, each to a different head of the biceps, and

A lesion of the musculocutaneous nerve. A rare complication of anterior shoulder dislocation.

A 47-year-old male patient with an anterior shoulder dislocation underwent reduction 3 days later. A residual neurologic injury remained, consisting primarily in weakness of shoulder and elbow flexion and sensory involvement of the ventral side of the forearm. Secondary sequelae included muscle atrophy with a concomitant frozen shoulder. The clinical examination and electromyography revealed a lesion of the musculocutaneous nerve, which is a very rare complication in shoulder dislocation.
