The clinical features and management of nine cases of mushroom poisoning due to Amanita pantherina (eight cases) and Amanita muscaria (one case) admitted to a children's hospital are described. Most ingestions were in the toddler age group with males being more frequently involved. Symptoms occurred between 30-180 min with the onset of central nervous system depression, ataxia, waxing and waning obtundation, hallucinations, intermittent hysteria or hyperkinetic behavior. Vomiting was rare. Seizures or myoclonic twitching occurred in 4/9 patients, but was controlled with standard anticonvulsant

We encountered a case of mushroom intoxication complicated by "toxic-like" myocarditis. Because of the lack of systematized knowledge on this subject, we performed a systematic review of the literature on cardiac toxicity in mushroom poisoning (MP). The aim of this study was to identify and describe the severity, the causal relationship, and the mushroom species involved in other reported cardiac events associated with MP. We included 39 studies in our review. We found 106 cases of cardiac events associated with MP, including 18 deaths. A wide variety of cardiac manifestations were reported, r

Ramaria flavo-brunnescens is a mushroom that grows in eucalyptus forests causing poisoning in cattle, sheep and, with less frequency, in horses and pigs. It causes ulcerative and gangrenous lesions in the skin, tongue and esophagus, and loss of hairs of the tip of the tail. Nervous signs are occasionally observed in sheep. This review aims to update the knowledge about poisoning by R. flavo-brunnescens in cattle and sheep in South America. Articles published as of 1950 were retrieved, and the epidemiological data, clinical signs, pathologies, and data on the pathogenesis of intoxication were r

Mushroom poisoning can result in acute kidney injury and fulminant hepatic failure as well as gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. The effects of mushroom poisoning on cardiac functions have not been known well. Only a few case reports have been published to date (1-3). We report 3 patients out of 45 patients who were followed due to acute kidney injury and hepatic injury secondary to naturally growing mushroom ingestion between 2009 and 2012. These three cases suffered from transient impairment in cardiac systolic function in addition to other manifestations of mushroom poisoning.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Toxic mushroom poisoning leads to a variety of clinical outcomes ranging from self-limited gastrointestinal symptoms to fulminant hepatic failure requiring orthotopic liver transplantation. We reviewed the outcomes of patients with severe acute hepatitis secondary to mushroom poisoning, treated with contemporary modalities.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients admitted to our institution over a 5-year period with elevated transaminase levels (>1000 IU/L) attributed to recent mushroom ingestion. The patients' clinical course, laboratory data, and treatment regimen w

The effects of a poisonous mushroom, Cortinarius speciosissimus, on rat kidney were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Suspension of dried mushroom (500 mg/kg body weight) was administered as a single dose directly into the esophagus. The kidneys were fixed by perfusion, and both cortex and medulla were sampled. C. speciosissimus toxin acted primarily on the epithelial cells of the proximal tubules. No changes were seen in the glomeruli. First ultrastructural changes were observed at 2 days in the renal cortex. The most prominent damage occurred at 5 days, when most of the proximal t

Ingestion of poisonous mushrooms by small animals can lead to liver failure, neurotoxicity, or gastrointestinal irritation. Although amanita poisoning can be lethal, ingestion of other toxic mushrooms is generally self-limiting and not life threatening. Most cases are undiagnosed, as routine diagnostic tests only exist for amanitins and psilocin. Early detection of amanitin exposure can greatly aid in the therapeutic intervention by allowing veterinarians to make timely decisions regarding patient management. Treatment is generally supportive, but specific therapeutic measures exist for amanit

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous silibinin may reduce mortality in patients with hepatotoxic mushroom poisoning, but it is unavailable in some countries. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral silymarin as an alternative treatment for decreasing mortality.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included patients reported to Ramathibodi Poison Center, Thailand, from January 2016 to May 2024. Eligibility criteria were patients aged 15 years or older who ingested foraged mushrooms, with either onset of gastrointestinal symptoms at 5 h or more or elevated aspartate aminotransfer

Mushroom poisoning is the leading foodborne illness in China. However, accurate identification of the causative species remains challenging, particularly in cases involving several species. In July 2022, a mushroom poisoning incident involving six individuals occurred in Yunnan Province, China, after consuming a meal of mixed wild mushrooms. Five of them developed poisoning symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fever. Laboratory examination revealed abnormalities in one female patient's blood biochemistry parameters and coagulation profiles, although these specific tests were no

BACKGROUND: Sclerodermataceae are known to be poisonous mushrooms; current published reports regarding the toxicity and treatment for Sclerodermataceae poisoning are limited.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old man was transferred to our hospital with complaints of visual disturbance, lightheadedness, bradycardia, and shock. The patient's medical history included cerebral hemorrhage and alcoholic hepatitis. He had eaten a mushroom growing in his garden, 30 min before arriving at our hospital. We carried out gastric lavage and gave the patient activated charcoal within an hour of mushroom ingesti

A case of very severe mushroom poisoning is reported. Traditional hepatoprotective therapy with ademethionine, ornithine-aspartate, and essential phospholipids failed to ensure positive dynamics of the hepatic and general functional state. Hepatic insufficiency was complicated by cerebral oedema and swelling, bilateral pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress of mixed genesis. Combined therapy with remaxol and ornithine aspartate produced beneficial effect, resulted in the improvement of the patient's condition and favorable outcome of the life-threatening intoxication.

BACKGROUND: Poisoning with the mushroom Cortinarius speciocissimus is a rare event. Within 2-17 days after ingestion unspecific symptoms appear. Characteristically, this state is soon followed by irreversible kidney damage which finally requires chronic hemodialysis.
CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old man was admitted with nausea, vomiting and acute anuria 9 days after he had eaten Cortinarius speciocissimus. Hemodialysis had to be started. Kidney biopsy revealed an interstitial nephritis. This finding corresponds to earlier case reports about intoxication with orellanine, the poison of Cortinarius s

A mixture of signs and symptoms can occur with muscarinic poisoning from medications or mushrooms. Manifestations may vary even among persons who ingested mushrooms grown in the same patch and gathered at the same time. Confusion can occur if mushroom poisoning is attributed to a suspected species rather than to the toxin suggested by signs and symptoms. Accurate diagnosis depends on clinical suspicion and recognition of muscarinic manifestations, notably diaphoresis, salivation, bladder cramping, diarrhea, and difficulty with visual accommodation. Muscarinic toxicity due to medications necess

Following ingestion of the mushroom Inocybe tristis, a 2 1/2-yr-old girl had sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, stupor and myosis. Subsequently, she developed excessive hypertension, a purpuric rash and transient hepatic, muscular, renal and cutaneous damage. The patient completely recovered after supportive therapy. This is an instance of severe multisystemic toxicity caused by the mushroom Inocybe tristis, Malençon and Bertault, previously unreported.

Five cases of poisoning by indigenous mushroom Hikageshibiretake (Psilocybe argentipes) are reported. As this mushroom contains psilocybin, in general, clinical features were similar to those seen by pure psilocybin. Acute toxic stuporous state with complete amnesia in the culminating period occurred in one case, psychedelic state with dreamy consciousness in one case and psychotic adverse reactions with vivid visual hallucinations with consciousness in three cases. There were accompanied with anxiety and panic reactions to subjective experiences. Though these toxic effects were usually short-

Three cases of intoxication due to ingestion of Cortinarius orellanus are presented. The hallmark of the clinical picture is acute tubulo-interstitial nephritis appearing about 10 days after ingestion of the mushrooms. This time lag is specific for intoxication by Cortinarius orellanus. In all the three cases, acute gastroenteritic disorders and hepatocellular damage were observed initially and disappeared spontaneously. Histological examination reveals acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. Experimental data are discussed in regard to the clinical observations.
