Chemical warfare (CW) agents are toxic synthetic chemicals that affect human's health, and sulfur mustard (SM) is a well-known chemical weapon that caused deaths of victims. The lung is the main target of SM exposure, and there are no definitive therapeutic modalities for lung injury induced by this agent. The possible therapeutic effects of medicinal plants and their active ingredients on lung injury induced by SM were reviewed in this article until the end of June 2021. Medicinal plants including Crocus sativus, Curcuma longa, Thymus vulgaris, Nigella sativa, and Zataria multiflora and also

Response properties of periodontal single afferents were investigated in cats with inflammatory irritant-induced pulpitis. A deep dentin cavity was prepared on the right mandibular canine in order to apply an inflammatory agent and small fiber excitant, allyl-isothiocyanate (mustard oil: MO), and single afferents innervating the canine periodontal mechanoreceptor were dissected from the mandibular nerve bundle by examining impulse responses while applying mechanical stimuli to the tip of the crown. Evoked impulses by mechanical stimuli were increased in number for 15 minutes with MO applicatio

Alternaria blight, caused by Alternaria brassicae, is a major constraint in Indian rapeseed-mustard cultivation, causing substantial yield losses. Diplotaxis erucoides, an oligotrophic wild crucifer exhibiting natural tolerance to Alternaria blight was explored as a source of beneficial endophytic bacteria. In this study, endophytic bacteria isolated from various tissues of D. erucoides were screened for plant growth-promoting and antagonistic traits against A. brassicae. Functionally efficient isolates showing growth promotion, phytohormone production, siderophore production and pathogen inhi

Transgenic Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) overexpressing y-glutamylcysteine synthetase (ECS) or glutathione synthetase (GS) were shown previously to have two-fold higher levels of glutathione and total nonprotein thiols, as well as enhanced cadmium tolerance and accumulation. Here, the hypothesis was tested that these transgenics have enhanced tolerance to organic pollutants, based on the reasoning that many organic xenobiotics are detoxified via conjugation to glutathione. Both the ECS and GS transgenics showed enhanced tolerance to atrazine: while root growth of wildtype seedlings was inhi

Spice allergies are often under-recognized and under-researched, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Cross-reactivity with other plant allergens further complicates accurate diagnosis. This literature review seeks to systematize and analyze current data on hypersensitivity to spices, including pepper, cumin, oregano, anise, mustard, and other seasonings. The review covers research published from 2010 to 2023 in peer-reviewed journals, books, and conference proceedings, sourced from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The main pepper allergens are PR-

Turnip aphid, Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is an insecticide-resistant pest of Brassica spp. SA-salicylic acid, a hormonal regulator of systemic acquired resistance in plants, might prove to be a better option against resistant pests. Therefore, SA was applied exogenously in the four treatments with the concentrations of 0, 0.5, and 1 mM 24-hours before infesting the Brassica juncea (Chinese leaf mustard) plants with L. erysimi. Responses of aphid were noted for two generations (F1 and F2) on reproductive fitness parameters. Kaplan-Meier survivorship, developmental period, re

Sting (Belonolaimus longicaudatus) and stubby-root nematodes (Nanidorus minor) are major plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) of spring potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) in Florida. Fumigation is the primary PPN management tactic for growers in the area, but more options are needed. Cover cropping is one of the few potential PPN management options that fit this cropping system. The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of summer and fall cover crops combinations against sting and stubby-root nematode in potato production. Two field trials were conducted in 2022-2023 and 2024-2025. Experiment

BACKGROUND: Lipid transfer protein (LTP) is a widely cross-reacting allergen in plant foods.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether IgE to vegetable foods show predictable trends in LTP allergic patients.
METHODS: Clinical allergy to plant foods other than peach was sought in 15 consecutive peach-allergic adults monosensitized to LTP. IgE specific for peach, apple, hazelnut, walnut, peanut, lentil, maize, soybean, tomato, sesame, mustard melon, kiwi, and celery as well as to mugwort pollen was measured.
RESULTS: Peach-specific IgE levels exceeded IgE to all other study foods. The higher were peach-sp

This study determined and compared the contents of bioactive components in plant seed oils extracted with n-hexane (Soxhlet method) and chloroform/methanol (Folch method) from coriander, caraway, anise, nutmeg and white mustard seeds. Oleic acid dominated among unsaturated fatty acids in nutmeg and anise seed oils while petroselinic acid was present in coriander and caraway oils. Concerning sterols, β-sitosterol was the main component in seed oils extracted with both methods. The content of total phenolics in nutmeg, white mustard and coriander seed oils extracted with chloroform/methanol was

Atmospheric water inputs such as dew are often overlooked in plant biology. We show that foliar dewdrops act as biochemical microreactors that trigger flowering in Arabidopsis thaliana, a small plant from the mustard family (Brassicaceae). These droplets generate reactive oxygen species that induce intracellular nitric oxide accumulation, initiating a redox cascade that suppresses the biosynthesis of abscisic acid, which contributes to the regulation of flowering time. This occurs via S-nitrosylation-mediated activation of histone deacetylase 19, which silences AAO3 and ABA2. Analysis of over

Levels of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) are increasing in the soils worldwide. Such contaminants cause toxicity in the plant systems which adversely affects growth and productivity. The objective of the present investigation was to elucidate individual and combined effects of As, Cr, and Cu (100 μM each) stress in metal hyper-accumulator plant Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.), exposed for a week. The highest accumulation was in the roots and in decreasing order viz. Cu > As > Cr. The magnitude of oxidative stress was maximal in combined stress, followed by As, Cr, and then Cu

The present study was conducted to evaluate the ameliorative effect of Brassica juncea (BJ) leaves methanol extract against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) induced toxicity in rats. Thirty-six male albino rats, six weeks old (weighing 140-190 g), were randomly assigned into 6 groups (n=6). AFB1 (200 μg/kg b.w., orally) was given to rats on alternate days and Brassica juncea extract (BJE) (300 and 600 mg/kg b.w., orally) in combination with AFB1 on successive days for 28 days. AFB1 exposure significantly elevated hepatic and kidney function parameters. Moreover, AFB1 markedly reduced antioxidant enzymes, e

Fried dietary oils often cause adverse health effects due to altered chemical and nutritional properties. In the present study with mustard oil, the effect of repeated frying (180°C for 10 min, three times) on chemical characteristics and oral intake of raw and fried mustard oil (5 g/kg for 5 weeks) in Wistar rats were investigated. Repeated frying caused oxidation reactions and free fatty acid content in mustard oil. This fried oil feeding to rats increased serum LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and decreased HDL leading to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease accounted by significant increment

Soil serves as the primary medium for root development, water storage, and microbial activity, making it essential for plant growth and development. However, changes in water molecular organization associated with soil-plant interactions under organic fertilization remain poorly understood. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) aquaphotomics was applied to investigate water spectral patterns in soil-plant systems under three fertilization treatments: control, pig manure (PM), and pig manure supplemented with plant-derived liquid fertilizer (PM + LF). Two leafy vegetables, mustard spinach and spin

Synthetic communities (SynComs) of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) could enhance cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction and promote plant growth in Brassica juncea L. However, the precise molecular mechanisms of facilitated Cd uptake and accumulation remain unclear. Here, using a Cd-specific fluorescent probe, we demonstrated that SynComs application markedly improved Cd distribution and uptake within plant roots. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses under Cd stress revealed that SynComs mitigate Cd-induced stress by activating plant antioxidative defense system, encompassing antiox
